Be careful what you wish for Mr. Anthony because you just might get it. You wanted out of Denver and in with New York. Well Donnie has put a deal on the table and included a third team just to get you here. If the deal goes through then you will have your extension and you will get to team up with Amar'e Stoudemire in New York which is what you have wanted ever since Lebron made his decision.
However that is where the dream may end and the nightmare begins. See the media and the fans have sold you as the piece to get us over the hump. Whenever anyone here has tried to suggest that there are alternatives to bringing you in, they have been shouted down or had advanced stats shoved down their throats until they puked. So once you get here you NEED TO DELIVER!
Here is your mission. First and foremost you have to score, and by score I mean 25-30 points a night, and you need to do so without taking shots form Amar'e or disrupting the offense so that Amar'e can get his points. You have to come in the door and except being Robin to Amar'e's Batman all while being judged like Batman. You can't just come in here and try to fit in you have to dominate right away. Seventeen to twenty point nights will not cut it, Wilson Chandler could do that, you were brought in here because you are supposed to be better than that.
Secondly, you have to come in here and play defense. If every other night we hear Clyde saying "Melo with the matador D!" You will be exposed as a fraud. In Denver you showed up and played defense when you felt like it, that will not cut it in NY even with D'Antoni as coach. Yes at first D'Antoni will get most of the blame, afterall he "doesn't preach defense," but eventually the media and the fans will get around to you. See Superstars who claim to be all about winning championships, shouldn't need a coach screaming in their ears every night to play defense. The Superstars should be working in tandem with the coach to tell the Bill Walker's or the Mozgov's that they need to play defense! For all the criticism of Lebron around here, one thing cannot be denied, Lebron plays defense and demands that his teammates play defense too. For all the criticism of Amar'e and his defense in the past, even his critics acknowledge that he has put forth the most consistent effort of his career on that end of the floor.
Lastly you better show results. Without you the Knicks are a feel good story for whom just getting to the playoffs would be seen as an accomplishment. Given the price tag that you will come with and the fact that the Knicks will not have the cap space to do much in the way of upgrades in the next couple of seasons, you will be tasked with making the Knicks a championship contender. That means a first round exit is unacceptable, so is a second round exit to the Heat, the Celtics or the Magic. You my friend were brought here to make sure that didn't happen. Oh the fan base may be willing to accept a game 7 loss in the Eastern Conference finals but that better be on a last second shot! And next season you better bring Kobe's head or whomever is representing the Western Conference's head back on a platter along with the Championship trophy. New York is the greatest place in the world to win, but it is hell on earth when you don't deliver.
So hopefully this trade goes through and you will get your wish. But the rest will be up to you. You played with a dude who once called himself "the answer," well being the answer to New York's championship drought is a big task, hope you are up for it.
