Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

When is our heist coming and who will it be. Ahem, Donnie, you are a gangster. Act like a Don !!

Everyone knows that you need a little luck on your side to become a champion in the NBA. I have a different opinion on how a champion can be born. Several teams have taken advantage of this tactic -- most recently the last 2 teams to win a championship -- the Lakers and Boston. You let the Grizzlies basically handed Pau Gasol and 2 rings over to LA and Minnesota gave Boston Kevin Garnett a ring as well. Who are we going to stick up in order to reach the trophy which has eluded us for over 40 years?? Donnie has friends in Indiana,(Bird & Granger) Portland,(Cho & Aldridge) Minnesota, (Kahn & Love)  Which player makes the most sense for us?? A lot of you say CP3, DWILL and D12. Which I think any of the last 3 put us over the top immediately. However, keep in mind, this is supposed to be a robbery i.e Pau for Kwame. We gave up half our team to get Amare some help in Melo and we are so close to putting it all together. Our leader (In Donnie we trust) has a lot of connections around the league but I don't think he has connections in the areas where any of those 3 play... Oh, wait a minute . But Donnie does have connections in New Orleans... Mr David Stern is formally in charge of the boys by the bayou... Isn't David a known Knick fan?? Didn't Dave recommend Donnie to Dolan?? Dave knows how much the league needs us to stay great in order for the league to be the cash cow he wants it to be. I know the league would go crazy if Dave pulled another fast one (Ewing in 85) for our Knicks. We all know you had your hand in the cookie jar to steer # 33 to the mecca. To those who will have something slick to say, I say "so what" and "you will get over it"... Or as Donnie has said on a # of occasions "none of your business". Time heals all...CP3 instantly puts us in the finals with the current roster...We do not have much to part with right now Dave...We are not interested in giving up our 2nd rd pick who should be the rookie of the year...Besides, this is supposed to be a heist and the league has allowed it to happen right before their eyes on a # of occasions...All i'm saying is give a brutha a break!!! You got Donnie into this mess which he has wiggled his way out of  without your help to this point. Turn your head and leave the keys to the office along with CP3 in the corner and we will see you after this CBA is over. Don't be alarmed when you find 2 of Ronny, Jared, Roger, Andy, Renaldo, Bill, Toney and the Willams boys sitting in the office. They are all hard workers and guys whose effort we think you will appreciate. What do you guys think and who would make a good heist for Donnie? Any other teams and friends in the league who may be willing to help Donnie become the DON.   We all like to dream don't we?? Let's go Knicks

I'm not sure we have what it takes to pull off a "heist"...

the Boston deal wasn’t really a heist and most definitely didn’t “give” them anything. Al Jeff was a solid young big and still is a good offensive player. Minny couldn’t do anything with or without Garnett.

And the Gasol deal wasn’t exactly giving him away either. For LA’s sake yea, it was. But the Grizz got that Marc Gasol guy out of it and I think the pick that led to Darrel Arthur was the doing of that trade too.

We don’t have a Marc Gasol just sitting somewhere picking his ass, cuz he’d be here already (and Jerome Jordan is NOT that…). We don’t have about 5 or 6 youngins we can put together and give anyone and not really care. We don’t have a first round pick that can get us a Ray Allen either.

These aren’t really heists. We’re not gonna get away wtih trading Bill Walker and Toney Douglas for Marc Gasol..not gonna work. Its gonna cost Landry Fields.

the Gasol trade was more balanced

then anyone remembers. they also got a ton of cap space, and Crittenton was a decent prospect at the time

cap space means nothing

cap space for memphis is like a drug addict with no drugs. no way in the world would you get any top notch free agent to go there.

they used it to take a flier on Darko

who was coming off a productive season. they then flipped Darko for Z-Bo, essentially turning Pau into Z-Bo, Marc, and Arthur.

Rudy Gay resigned

I know they threw a shit ton of money at him, but that’s what cap space does, even for a team like Memphis

by WSD on Mar 15, 2011 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

the point is the teams were on the cusp of greatness and a rip off put them over the top. we need something like that. kwame and marc for Pau is a heist. Arthur had been traded quite a few time on draft day. he started out with the rockets i believe

by harlemworld on Mar 12, 2011 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Arthur wasn't Memphis's pick

but they drafted Donta Greene and traded him for Darrel Arthur basically straight up with the Kings(tho somehow the Hornets actually drafted Arthur…)

The Lakers dealt 2 first rounders, we don’t have that. And again we don’t even have a player like Gasol who’s very talented just sitting overseas.

We don’t even have second round picks for the next two years cuz Donnie was busy taking it up the tailpipe again with this trade….

we do have a 1st rd pick pick this year

houston has the right to swap with us. don’t we have our own 2nd rd pick as well? where did it go? the two 2nd rd picks we gave up in the trade were from d lee.

I know we have our first rounder

but we can’t trade it.

The 2nd rounder’s gone cuz of Toney Douglas

I think Stern is much bigger fan of maintaining the NBA's image than he is of the New York Knicks...

so I doubt he’ll do anything sketchy to help us.

However while we’re dreaming…

Indiana: Roy Hibbert (Who cares about his deficiencies he’s an actual pure center, and therefore a rare gem in today’s league).

Minnesota: Kevin Love (great fit for Amare and Melo because he can spread the floor with his shooting, and help their rebounding).

Portland:Gerald Wallace (I know they just got him, but honestly, he’s really the only Blazer I would want).

The Knicks are back.

Roy Hibbert

would be hideous in the D’Antoni system. There are insufficient words to describe how horrible that would be.

by gbnypat on Mar 13, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Indiana's not gonna deal Hibbert

I’m pretty sure they’re looking at he and Collison to be guys that they add pieces around to eventually compete.

There’s no way we can get Love. Don’t have the pieces and when he hits FA, he’s gonna earn a max, which I still don’t see how we’d be able to pull off, despite what some people say. Not to mention he, Amare, and Melo would form an ugly-ass defensive frontline.

You wouldn’t want LaMarcus Aldridge?

by WSD on Mar 15, 2011 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I've soured on the idea of Chris Paul in New York

with two of the best iso players in the league, the PG position here has become more a complimentary role…less about making plays for your teammates and more about just hitting shots and keeping things straight. Chauncey Billups is obviously fantastic at doing those two things…perhaps the best in the league at that second one.

So if I could pull off a heist, I would target Mr. Varejao in Cleveland. The Knicks don’t really need one of the best centers in the game, but they need a center who is solid at everything..this means not a pure defense and rebounding guy, but not exactly a magnificent offensive player either..somewhere in between. Varejao is somewhere in between. He would be excellent here.

by BJabs on Mar 13, 2011 1:44 AM EST reply actions

it isn't exactly possible for the Knicks to acquire him though

I just like the idea of spending all of the cap space this summer on a guy like him..unfortunately he’s signed for the next few years.

by BJabs on Mar 13, 2011 1:45 AM EST up reply actions

oh my

he’s signed through 2014/2015

by BJabs on Mar 13, 2011 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

That contract is a lot to handle, no doubt

But damn, Varejao would be perfect for this team

by WSD on Mar 15, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno...

I think the iso is cute and all and works when we need something in the half court, but I still think our offense won’t be as good as it should be until we get that PnR working.

You’re a Suns fan transplant right? How good would Mare be right now if we always had the PnR in our back pocket?

but these PnR specialist PGs win 0 championships all-time. Chauncey is proper championship PG.

I'm pretty much 100% certain CP3 is a lot more then a PnR specialist.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Mar 13, 2011 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope that Walsh is deft enough to realize that we score points and acquiring

a third star player is no longer the focus of this team. Look at the Heat! James, Wade and Bosh sounds sexy but the function of the three of them on that team doesn’t work. If you replaced Bosh with Beasley they would be a stronger defensive team with better rebounding and chemistry. Forget the sex appeal, we are sexy enough to raise ticket prices 50% next year so Melo and Amar’e have done their jobs.

Use the cap space and draft picks and get 3-4 high energy, efficient, TALL players that play wing and in the paint and this team will take off! A player with marginal scoring ability will get his points in D’antoni’s offense. We need chemistry players, bangers, workers, players that continue to push teams when the stars are on the bench getting rest. Its best to get a Marc Gasol type now we don’t need Howard or CP3 to win a championship.

i agree to a point. we just do not have cap space til 2012.

if we got a marc gasol, who is a decent player on a so so team, there is no guarantee that we would be a team that is in the ecf on a yearly basis for the duration of amare and melo’s stay in nyc. I am hopeful we can make a run this year and wouldnt be surprised if we made a run to the ecf. however, that wasnt expected at the beginning of the year. and i’m thinking much higher than that after suffering for so long. the east is very competitive right now and i don’t see m.gasol being that player to put us over the top. his #‘s have dropped this year on a so so team. we need guys who are going to be a force to be reckon with and will take no prisoners. he doesn’t offer what we need — defense, rebounds and blocks — though he would be an upgrade to what we currently have. however, i am tired of settling for middle of the pack players. i want the best in the business at what they do.

Absolutely right

Melo/Amare are the highest scoring duo in the league since the trade for Melo. Paul is a talented passer but he’s a scorer at heart. We just don’t need him if getting him will sacrifice getting size.

I dunno

Any doubts I have with Paul are injury-related. He’s easily one of the best passers I’ve ever seen. He just needs to take on a larger scoring role in NO cuz the supporting cast is mediocre. He could average 15 assists playing with Amare and Melo.

Paul is a scorer at heart?

He’s always gone to great lengths to feature inferior teammates. He has the team leader’s mentality and, unlike Rose or Deron, won’t have to be asked to be a full-time scorer, which is generally an uncomfortable position for pure PGs. He’d be great here (and he’d come with Okafor)

Deron is not a full time scorer

Dude put up 16apg in his first 3 games with Travis Outlaw. Plus, he can’t really shot with his injury. He’s always around the top of the league in assists.

regarding heist, maybe al horford, if atlana kep suckin and he becomes frustrated.

We need seize and rebounding, we need someone who can close the paint. so that our guards can be more aggressive on the perimeter, size is probably the most important single factor in playoffs, more than playmaking. Regarding our PG we have to wait and see, how TD will develop (this can be huge), and we can get some quality playmaking from Melo, who is being used more and more in point forward role (AI in philly is doing great as point and he is no melo). CB can be resigned for vet minimum (after next year), and he can play with ease backup PG until 40 (like Kidd), so gettin superstar PG really isnot our priority, size is. We will have to spend relativly big bucks on size, our 2012 cap room plus this years midlevel . When signing a big, it is important to know how can he matchup against Howard, Bynum, we need someone who can hold its own (to an extent) against these two, not someone like NENE who shrinks in the playoffs.

by BubbaChuck on Mar 13, 2011 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

or josh smith...

i know he’s no center… but melo, stat and j smoove would be a SICK front line… and smith can also add to rebounding and stretch the floor with 3 point shooting.

and doesn’t atlanta have some cap issues to the point there going to have to make some sacrifices? horford or smith would be outstanding.

by bucketsncents on Mar 13, 2011 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Smith would be great

And definitely more likely to be taken from ATL. He’s a terrific defender, so that would be awesome for our front court. However, you do not want him out on the perimeter

by WSD on Mar 15, 2011 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

this year we shoul target with our midlevel tyson chandler, he is almost perfect fit, brings tougness, size, rebound and very good defense.

Anh he can score on smaller player, that was seen in our game. With Chandler in our lineup, the game in Dallas becomes completely different ballgame and we become nightmare matchup for east teams.

by BubbaChuck on Mar 13, 2011 1:39 PM EDT reply actions

i agree. chandler, at least as a model, would be perfect.

Athletic enough to run the floor, gives us an interior presence on both ends, good enough to exploit match-ups but doesn’t demand offensive touches, and he would bring a much-needed defensive physicality.

And Turiaf would be the perfect back-up for him, bc he can do the same in short spurts.

we can draft a guy that Team X wants and them immediately make the swap.

I think it’s more so teams don’t go and trade all their first round picks that are still like 4 years out, it’s just bad practice.
