not to steal seth's thread 'cause he always nails it... but DAMN! that was awesome to see live, i had to post something... and so different from the shit we've been seeing.
and here's what i noticed:
1) any chance at winning any games or playoff series depends SOLELY on our ability to play team defense (i know, obvious). the reason is because we actually don't have much offensive talent at all. our ball movement is basic and perimeter oriented, we don't get out on breaks 'cause we don't have the athletes and we don't really penetrate to the hole. this win against orlando was only due to a collective desire to finally play like dickheads. other than melo, we really have no shot creators and amare is really struggling without a PG to get him the ball on the move (though he did play defense with balls, guts, nuts and cohones tonight).
2) landry of the lost- got bless this kid. seeing it live, it became painfully obvious that he too needs a PG with vision willing to hit him on the run. he's not a creator either. he's a damn smart basketball player who cuts and rolls and leaks out on breaks and gets open... but without a PG or even a high post passer (not yet melo), he becomes invisible. in time, hopefully his new teammates will realize the jewel they have on our landriest of landry's.
3) we finally played like underdogs and not superstars- which was such a relief to watch. strangely, even though we have 2 stars, we have to play like underdogs if we have any shot at winning games this year. melo, who i admittedly have been down on, played like a dawg tonight... which means he better KEEP playing that way. we just don't have the talent to think of ourselves as better than others, and tonight it seemed like our guys realized this.
4) she-will was fuckin' awesome in the 4th quarter- and no, i'm not dubbing him the future 5 we need. he just showed some skills with his post defense.
and for the rest of you who have been hurting and sulking and pulling out hair and wanting to break shit... seeing this game live put me at ease... not because we won, but because we are SO CLEARLY NOT WHO WE'RE GOING TO BE NEXT YEAR... and i finally accept this. essentially, we're an entire team short and if we can finish this year playing with any sort of grit, melo and amare might actually benefit from it and take that NEW YORK ATTITUDE INTO NEXT YEAR with a squad of new, more balanced troops.
so thanks for bearing with this post... it was just a FUCKIN' SICK GAME TO SEE UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL... and i know it's corny, but Y'ALL WERE RIGHT THERE WITH ME!!!!!
