Shelden Williams will start again tonight.

Mike D'Antoni said after the last game that, in Ronny Turiaf's absence, he'd continue to start Shawne Williams to spread the floor for the first unit and save Shelden Williams from early foul trouble. Now that Extra E has also been scratched, She-Will start by default [high fives self]. Here, Steve Adamek twat it in case you don't believe me:

D'Antoni: Shawne Williams "doubtful" tonight, Turiaf out, so Shelden Williams to start at center unless Shawne Williams is 100%

So, cool. She-will have his work cut out for him (BAM! Again!) against the tall and schvitzy Brooke Lopez and/or the board-happy Kris Humphries, but his performance against Dwight Howard the other night suggests that he's up for the task. It'll be interesting to see what happens if and when Shelden and Amar'e Stoudemire get into foul trouble against New Jersey's front line. Jared Jeffries will probably be the first man off the bench, but after that, it's pretty bare. Might we see Derrick Brown? Might Renaldo Balkman be activated? Might D'Antoni finally engage his secret weapon (Anthony Carter's telescoping legs)?

Seriously though

I think we’ve got to see some D’Brown tonight. Or, if Extra E is inactivated, maybe a few minutes of humptisch.

for real

he seems really athletic. hopin to see more.

Yes, this is a good opportunity to both let guys get rest before the playoffs, as well as poke around and see what we have at the end of the bench.

Good

Sheldon needs and deserves more PT…..man Turiaf is a good energy player, but ALWAYS injured….

by Jason Bee on Mar 30, 2011 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah

Turiaf really seems to anchor their D and give intangibles but it’s demoralizing how he gets hurt with regularity. She-will is a better rebounder though and I think that is very important.

by fuhry on Mar 30, 2011 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I think, she-will could be a great defensive/boarding pf for amare going forward(maybe center if Turiaf still has injury probs and we don't want him back)

As we know, he is a good rebounder and looked like a good defender last night. We could really use a guy like that at the 4(maybe 5, probably not thought bc he is undersized for the 5 in all honesty). Him and Turiaf(if he stays healthy) would be a nice defensive duo at the 4 and 5 off the bench next year.

He's a little short for a 5

but he’s plenty bulky at 250 plus pounds. Guy’s a wide body. That’s at least as important as height. Played good D against Howard. By the way, I saw a picture of Howard standing right next to STAT. They’re both listed at 6’11" but STAT is definitely taller than Howard. Howard’s barely 6’10"

Ben Wallace was a defensive beast at 6’9" A couple of inches don’t make that much of a difference. She-will may be better as a 5 than as a 4, where is lack of speed and range hurt him more.

we have good back court to fill upto sf position so we can move melo to 4 and she-will and JJ should be only 5

Glad She-Will is getting the nod, but...

Lopez could be just what the doctor ordered to get Amare back on track. Even with heavy legs Amare can blow by Lopez at will, and if Lopez sags off Amare can get good looks to get that sweet jumper workin again.

by Crackback on Mar 30, 2011 11:40 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Also, Humphries is the exact kinda guy that gives Amare fits.

Not really

You’ll inevitably overpay Lopez once it’s time to extend him, unless you find a way to trade him. But he’ll probably stay in NJ and become Kaman with an even worse contract.

Actually it doesn't

I mean, it’s true that Amare is being paid more, but of course much better and more established players are paid more.

by superturboultra on Mar 30, 2011 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously.

Is Brook Lopez a great player? No.
Is Brook Lopez worth his $3 million dollar annual salary? Yes.
Is Amare worth $18 million a year? No.

by Clayton Balch on Mar 30, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

This whole comparison is just dumb

Former Rookie of the Year Amar’e was certainly worth his peanuts when he was getting paid them.

But just like all other 8-year veterans of the NBA he’s on a much larger contract now. I think he’s definitely worth $18 million. He put the team on his back (Greg Jennings!) for much of this year and carried them to a great streak in December. Look at players like Gilbert Arenas and Rashard Lewis for examples of players not earning their money, not players who were MVP candidates for part of the year.

And don’t worry, you (or some other unfortunate team) will be overpaying for Brook plenty once his contract is up

No you misunderstand

You said Amare is paid a million times more than Lopez, and Amare is paid $100million, so then… oh, nevermind. You’re right, you make an excellent point regarding the economics of the NBA.

by superturboultra on Mar 30, 2011 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

$20 a year is a bad contract?

Hell, I’ll pay Lopez $25 out of my own pocket to come play for my rec league team.

New Jersey has proven to be unable to support the Nets appropriately, there's no debating that.

That’s why we’re moving to Brooklyn.

Derrick! Derrick! Derrick!

I feel bad ragging on D’Antoni over not playing scrubs off the bench—normally it just doesn’t seem worth it to quibble over whether Walker or Mason Jr. should be getting playing time—but it’s the Nets and I want to see what this kid has.

It’d be great if he could be a servicable backup power forward next year.

You have to remember..,

Extra E was a “scrub” until he got the chance to play after spending the first 20 games at the end of the bench and now he’s a starter.

I think I have higher hopes for Derrick than I did Anthony Randolph.

by robk on Mar 30, 2011 5:32 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yeah I actually agree with you

Brown is a different breed of scrub from guys like Carter and Walker. Those guys have been given their chances. Brown might just be raw with the potential to be good

Does anyone else think Shelden is a way better defender than Turiaf?

Turiaf really doesn’t do anything other than block shots. He doesn’t have the strength to be much of a man-to-man defender against centers or a post defender.

Shelden surprised the hell out of me the way he was giving Dwight some serious grief. I didn’t know we had anyone on our roster capable of doing that.

Still on the fence about Carmelo's dopey smile

by knickswin on Mar 30, 2011 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, he is a better defender than Turiaf

That was the reason he was the starting power forward on Denver. I have previously mentioned this. I would also like to point out once again that Derrick Brown is not going to see the light of day this year. The Knicks are still in a playoff race and DB is a zero time rookie. Its time to tune up whatever version of this Knicks team which is going into the playoffs. I would much rather have Shelden Williams giving Amar’e fifteen to eighteen minutes of blow than starting at center. But this is the Knicks, and coach MDA just does not like to have big active 5’s slowing things down. I think I am going to puke… nice win Knikcks.
