I, like I presume most of you, am a born and raised New Yorker. I will always be proud of that. Except when it comes to the media and hype of the Sports section, talk radio, et al. I read around the trade deadline that the expectations, should the Knicks trade for Melo, would be higher than ever on D'Antoni and the Knicks to deliver a winner. I don't recall if the phrase "championship or bust" was ever used, but I do know that for some reason, there was thought that if this Knick team was one and done in the playoffs, then it would be a disappointment.
And that, in my opinion, is the pitfall of expectations. As they say, its an unavoidable part of playing in New York. I don't despair, however, because I know this team played its heart out. They gave the Celtics their best. They came very close to winning Game 1 in Boston, and then with the odds against them in Chauncey AND Amar'e going down for game 2, they nearly took that one as well. But, to me, its not about the playoff series. Its about the playoffs, the first visit for New York in 7 years. The winning season, the first time that's happened since 2001. In my opinion, this season was a huge success, a step in the right direction, which is something this club has needed.
Barring a lock out, 2011-2012 is going to be even better. 1 more year to build cohesion, plug the holes in the roster necessary to compete, and continue to revive basketball at the Garden. I can't wait.
