They are in so now what?

That was the question I was asked after the Knicks clinched a playoff spot last night.  For me the answer to that question is all about Carmelo Anthony.

Carmelo was introduced to New York fans over a month ago but he will not have a chance to begin shaping his legacy as a Knick until the playoffs start.  This season and the playoff berth that resulted are really about Amar'e and his legacy in New York. He came in here when no one else did, proclaimed the Knicks to be back and then went out took this team on his shoulders and led them to the playoffs.  In doing so Amar'e kept his part of the bargain and fulfilled NBA mathematics.  One star surrounded by some decent players can get you to the playoffs.  However the Knicks are not a one star team any longer and that is why these playoffs are important to Carmelo, even more so than Amar'e.

NBA mathematics holds, one star + decent players = playoff team.  The equation then follows two stars + decent players = Championship contender.  Now obviously the Knicks as constituted have several needs that must be resolved before we can talk championship.  However, in saying that much all we are really saying is that we should not be planning a parade down the Canyon of Heroes for this June.  Championship aside, there isn't any reason why new Yorkers should not expect a deep run in these playoffs.

I do not want to hear about how this team is set up in the future by getting Anthony now.  I will consider that once the Knicks have played their final game of the season.  What I see is that the Knicks have Stoudemire, Anthony, and Billups right now.  As fans we are fooling ourselves if you think, Dolan, Donnie, Isiah, or whomever was behind the Anthony trade was only looking at future seasons. You do not trade for a second star and bring with him a player of Billups' playoff resume as a wait until next year move.  The Knicks management made this deal in part to get Anthony locked up long term but also to make a run this year.

Now understand the Knicks do not have enough talent to win the championship this year, however, they do have enough talent to get to the Eastern Conference finals.  That my friends is the yard stick that Carmelo Anthony will be measured by. Gallo and Chandler can maybe win a playoff game or even two and lose in the first round.  The Knicks have two stars, teams with two stars should not exit the playoffs before the conference finals.

Carmelo gets a lot of adoration and dick riding from the fan base around here. In my opinion he is not worth it until he can deliver in the playoffs here in New York.  This is not a case of what have you done for me lately, but what have you done for me period. For Carmelo to be worth all the hype he gets, he should be able with STAT and Billups to get this group to the conference finals.  Because honestly folks, there is enough talent here to get that far.  The legacy of Carmelo in NY begins this post season. This will be his first real test on the big stage. Let's see if he passes.
