Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

1 trade, 2 free agents and 1 draft pick...

look guys, i'm getting married in 2 months, buying a house in one month... and thinking about the knicks' future is one of the few escapes i have.

so screw it... i'm writing a scenario i'd like to see that entails 1 trade, 2 free agents and 1 draft pick.

and i welcome yours, so bring the good stuff... what's your 1 trade, 2 free agents and 1 draft pick?

1 trade:

balkman

walker

billups

TD

FOR

verajao

sessions

gibson

the money works. cleveland unloads 3 larger than they want contracts for 1 huge expiring (they can buy out) and 3 serviceable young pieces with much shorter, cheaper contracts (i know it's a stretch).

2 free agents (splitting the MLE):

nick young

nazr mohammed or ryan hollins

1 daft pick:

kenneth faried

1 championship roster (maybe):

sessions/gibson/rautins (one facilitator/one shooter)

landry/ nick young (one well rounded/one scorer)

melo/faried (one all-star/one rebounder-defender-dirty worker)

stat/shawne (one all-star/one shooter)

verajao/mohammed or hollins (2 hustlers, defenders, rebounders)

Trade, maybe, I have my doubts.

But I guess it would be okay. I like the pick of Faried and the Nazr signing. Now getting Nick Young would be pretty good, but he won’t come easy or cheap. The Wizards may or may not really like Jordan Crawford, but regardless, Nick Young is valuable. And I don’t want to pay him big time money and prevent our chances of getting CP3/Dwight/Deron.

Theo-trade John Lackey for a used condom and a punch in the nose. Remember, it's all about value.

The Varejao/Sessions obsession on P&T is mindboggling

Never have I seen so much fan support for a deal so horrible that even Layden and Isiah would feel sick at the thought of making it.

aw c'mon rooster...

sessions is young and has shown versatility and ability… and verajao, other than the health concerns, would be a great compliment to stat and melo.

i am curious what your 1 trade, 2 FA’s and 1 draft pick would be.

by bucketsncents on May 23, 2011 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

really?

Sessions is 25, can’t shoot, and is average in all other facets of the game. He’s a league average backup.
Varejao is turning 29 and is overrated defensively, anyways. His contract is also brutal, given by Danny Ferry in the LeBron era and quickly becoming a dinosaur.
Gibson sucks.

We shouldn’t make a trade unless something really good comes available. You really want to send our starting PG and our backup PG away for a PG worse than both players + a hustle player? You must be a closet Cavs fan, there’s no other explanation.

Also, why would you sign Nick Young with the threat of Washington matching when you can sign the far better JR Smith for less years? They’re the same age, too.

JR is a knucklehead

Your love for him is mindboggling. While I don’t like the trade really or signing Young, Smith is a guy that’s gonna be after money, not half the MLE.

Not to mention the amount of horrid shots he’d jack up playing here? Likewise, I’m pretty sure he and Melo didn’t get along on the court

Smith has shown signs of wanting to be "the man"

Wants to take over games, make the big shot, play when it matters most, maybe even start, but he has handled 6th man well. Guys like that don’t wanna take a lower amount of money than they already make to be 4th wheel on a championship team.

Smith is also one of the guys that openly spoke out about the team playing better and less selfishly after the Melo trade.

None of this stuff is written in black and white, but from everything I’ve watched, read and heard, I feel pretty confident inferring he’ll want a decent chunk of change and that he doesn’t wanna sign to a team with Melo again

by WSD on May 24, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

He's making $7m this year

Whatever your opinion of him there is no way in hell is he taking a 50% pay-cut going into the prime years of his career.

Why does everyone around here love JR Smith so much.

The dude is a shorter Al Buckets with more tattoos and a worse barber. Also Jr. is a Knuckle head off the court and in the lockerroom. Al Buckets for all his chucking and no defense playing is actually a nice person both in the lockerroom and out. Trust me the only regret Karl has about the MELO trade is that JR wasn’t included in the deal.

Yeah, we usually think alike, Buckets, but I'm with the Rooster on this one.

I really don’t understand what P&T sees in Ramon Sessions or Varejao.

They really do suck. I would only consider them on the Knicks if they were signing for some type of minimum deal, and that’s not possible right now.

It is a lot of money

But at some point management has to knuckle down and overpay a big man because that’s the way the league is now. Not alot of good centers out there, so their prices get driven up. Not saying Varejao deserves that money or that he should be our top priority at center, but no denying he’d be a nice fit as a role player next to Stat and Melo

I actually like the Verajo, Gibson trade, Verajo is a good garbage man, an Boobie can spot up and hit threes. I don’t think Washington is giving up Nick Young though.

by mrluck35 on May 23, 2011 10:54 PM EDT reply actions

Boobie created a reputation for himself that he couldn't live up to when he splashed all those threes

in the Eastern Conference Finals against Detroit (who kept inexplicably triple-teaming Lebron).

Everyone thought Boobie was some kind of up-and-coming star, and the funniest part is that Boobie believed the hype himself. Remember? He went out and shaved some big freakin’ star in the side of his head, and started talking about himself in the third person.

Anyway, Boobie sucks. I’m not going to pretend that I watch Cleveland play every night, but during Lebron’s last two seasons Boobie became an annoying chucker with a low B-Ball IQ. Now that Lebron is gone, his suckness is more glaring than ever.

I don’t want him anywhere near his team.

Sorry for the rant… but he’s one of the players in this league that annoys me the most. Low IQ. Gets undeserved credit. Had the media on his jock for 15 seconds of fame, believed the hype and hasn’t stopped chucking since.

by superturboultra on May 24, 2011 6:03 AM EDT reply actions

ill play

my 1 trade would be to get Chandler back from Denver. I am not 100% sure how to make it work… but I would center the trade around Fields. I think Wil is a better fit then Fields right now on this team. And I think Denver is sour on our Ninja.

My one FA signing would be Humphries. I think he can be gotten for the MLE (or whatever replaces it), and him and Faried sounds very close skill wise.

My Draft pick would be a pg. I liked the sound of this Jackson kid. I dont really know enough about them to say one PG over another, but it sounds like there are a couple that could be had. If one of the better big men fall, then it may be worth it to scrap this plan.

This doesnt really address our big man need. I know. But I dont think they should reach on a guy that deosnt fit just cause he is 7 foot. Get the best players you can, and then if someone becomes available you have trade chips for him.

i like chandler and would welcome him back, but not at the expense of fitting a need (rebounding and backup PG). and jackson definitely intrigues as a draft pick.

humphries also meets a need, though i’m thinking his ego (kardashian) and numbers (albeit on a sucky team) will price him out of our range.

i think there will be

its going to change, but its not going to change that much.

There will still be ways to make trades, still be FA, and still have ways for teams to improve. They are not gonna cut everything off and make it all drafting.

They are not going to penalize teams that have saved cap room by taking it all away.

There will be changes, but I think a lot of it is not going to really effect “us” the fans. It will mostly be things like revenue sharing and the level of the salaries. If every player in the NBA takes a paycut, then every team will have to spend less… it wont really effect the player movement as much.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

Now that Cho is out, who knows what Portland is gonna do. His qualifying offer is 8.8Mil…

Cho said they would pickl it up but their interim guy doesn’t sound nearly as sure.

I dont know if I would pay Oden 8.8Mil unless it was over 2-3 years, hmm….

I do think Sessions could be good in the right situation

But his lack of outside shooting makes him a poor fit for the Knicks, I think. Varaejao would be a good addition but if we take on that contract we could be in big trouble.

by fuhry on May 24, 2011 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

The Cavs are drafting Irving. Why add another PG to Irving and Davis?

Also, while theoretically AV is a good fit next to Amar’e… Is he worth that huge contract, especially in this new uncertain CBA. I say no. He’s a good player, but with like $40 mil a year committed to Melo/Amar’e, we can’t afford to pay Varajao $8-10 mil.

Also, Sessions can’t be counted on as our best PG, especially with two big scorers. He’d be good as a back up, but not as a starter.

Also, this trade kills all 2012 cap space. Even if we don’t get CP3 (I think we will), that cap space could be used to add valuable depth.

by hvino on May 24, 2011 3:44 PM EDT reply actions

OK I'll bite

Trade: TD & Landry for Brandon Jennings, if Milwaukee is really moving on from him due to lack of leadership (which wouldn’t be an issue here anyway). Give him a year playing alongside Billups to bring him up right.

Free agent #1 (who will take most of the MLE): Carl Landry, with Earl Clark as a back-up if we whiff

Free agent #2 (super scrubs all signing for minimum): Von Wafer for scoring off the bench, Gadzuric for a cheap big body, Theo Ratliff if he hasn’t retired yet to be another big body as well as a great veteran presence

1 draft pick: Darius Morris – you guys sold me on him, although I see him as a facilitating 2 in this line-up. Him and Jennings in a fast break would be fucked up.

Why I do these: 3 facilitators on the court at any given time (Jennings, Morris, and sometimes Melo), 3 unstoppable scorers (Jennings, Melo, STAT), 1 garbage man to pull it all together and put everyone at their natural position. The bench would be Poop, Billups, Bully, Wafer, Ronny when he’s not hurt, Gadz/Theo otherwise. Rounding out the bench is Rautins, Jerome Jordan, Jared Jeffries.

2012 cap space is mostly preserved. I think this is all realistic. Am I crazy?

not opposed to packaging TD and landry for talent… though jennings worries me a little with his inconsistency. and i am an earl clark fan… he’s big with some offensive moves and still young. and regarding gadzuric… i’d rather ryan hollins, but i get your drift. i wonder if we could get sonny weems with wafer money though… i think that kids got some chops.

by bucketsncents on May 24, 2011 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

I like that idea. I'd consider getting Weems, Clark and Hollins a successful off-season (Assuming we have a good draft too)

adds some legit depth.

Clark can be a young back up to Amar’e while playing next to him at some times. I remember when he was drafted he was compared to Lamar Odom because of his playmaking and versatility. If he could hone some of that ability it would be awesome for our offense. Imagine a young, athletic Boris Diaw in the D’antoni Suns.

Weems could be a great sixth man, and while his lack of shot doesn’t make him a great fit, he could provide some scoring for the 2nd unit. Think of him as a smarter Bill Walker with more desire.

Hollins is extremely athletic and could make some nice highlight dunks. He had some good games in Dallas and Minny (not so much in Cleveland). He’s kind of like a poor man’s JaVale McGee. Problem is the dude is straight up weak. Like a twig.

Add those three players, along with a good draft pick or two (Jimmer? Jackson? Faried? Valuncias? Motiejunas? Biyombo? Tyler? Selby?), and re-signShawne (and Shelden/Carter?) and I’d really like our roster. It would also allows to remain flexibility in the future (2012).

by hvino on May 24, 2011 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I was initially intrigued by Hollins

But I looked into him some more and he’s not really a good rebounder. Hvino compared him to a poor man’s Javale McGee which is essentially an insult because McGee isn’t that great. To be a poor man’s McGee… eh, pass.

A name I keep thinking about is CJ Miles. Definitely fills a need at the 2,3 spot. Can start or provide good scoring off the bench. His 3pt%‘s have never been good, but he’s reliable to hit 1 or 2 a game. Also a good defender, and generally plays better in a quicker pace.

I think if Dallas is going to give up one of either Barea or Beaubois, the price is going to be more than something we could comfortably pay.

As in they’ll match unless we go overboard. And I don’t endorse going overboard for these guys, no matter how much I may like them.

by GAx on May 27, 2011 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would Dallas give either up?

Cuban’s got the money to keep them both and try to get to the Finals again next year, only with a healthier squad and a few more parts.

Roddy starts at SG when healthy, anyways

Kidd and Terry can see less and less minutes. Barea is the backup PG, Roddy is the SG and PG of the future. No reason to give either up at all, especially because Dallas values Roddy very highly and was refusing to even involve him in a “rental” deal for Melo.

No way in hell you get Barea for 3 mil

Cuban will offer him 5 mil just to tell the Knicks to suck his dick! And beware if Cuban let’s him walk, virtually every guy Cuban let walk out the door turned out not to be shit once he left. The only guy who wasn’t was Twanny jamison who made two all star teams for the Wiz, and Cuban forced the Wiz to pay Twanny 100 mil!

Cuban traded Jamison to the Wizards for the rights to Devin Harris

Swear to god it's like Robert's morphed into a People magazine column writer or something.

Every sentence ends like this! With mock cheerfulness so sarcastic I can’t tell if I’m part of the joke or just a butt!

I thought he got the extension in 2009?

Is there a particular reason for him vs someone else?

I must say I appreciate the guts this post has

Trading Billups and getting back Ramon Sessions, and thinking anything except giving Houston a better draft pick is bold!

by Robert Curre on May 31, 2011 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

Tayshaun Prince is completely overrated

I wouldn’t even take him for free.

I’d try to get Ben and Rasheed Wallace to team up with Billups.
I’d draft Tobias Harris or Faried.
I’d buy the rights to Darius Morris, Andrew Goudelock and Keith Benson.

tayshawn would fit perfectly...

no he’s not all world, but he can defend multiple positions, is a good rebounder and ball mover and has won a championship. he’s a great glue guy, with actual experience.

by bucketsncents on Jun 1, 2011 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

that's just his reputation

He’s on the wrong side of 30 and I don’t think he’s much better than league average. He’s no better than T-Mac. OK, I would take him on the Knicks if he was cheap, but his attitude irritates me and I don’t think he would enjoy the bench.

I would LOVE to see him go up to Amare or Carmelo and demand some of their minutes.

I would also LOVE seeing him pouting his way to starting out of position at SG or even C. Just because he’s back on a team with his best friend ever and wants to start with him.

don't know where you've gotten your information...

but tayshawn was widely known as the glue on that pistons team… and i emphasize TEAM. shit, start him at the 2… he’s a ball mover, a long defender, a rebounder and can hit his shots… all great compliments to the velcro, non-defending, non-rebounding hands of stat and melo
