Hey, how did Thursday's Knicks workouts go?
Excellent question! I think these links I have to share can help you find some answers. As we learned late in the evening, the Knicks practice facility was populated with both promising draft-eligible youngsters and free agents of all walks of life. Bonzi Wells was in the house! BONZI WELLS! Here are a few articles written about yesterday's workouts:
- Chris Sheridan did speaking to Charles Jenkins, Iman Shumpert, and Chris Singleton, all of whom worked out yesterday.
- Marc Berman and Newsday's Arthur Staple both wrote on the relatively unsung Jenkins, who's the first New York City point guard with serious potential to come around in a while. I'm most interested in whether he'd like to be called "Chuck", "Chaz", or "Charmander".
- TKB has video with Jenkins, so you can be certain that he is a real person (unless, like me, you're wary of Tommy Dee's puppeteering skillz).
- Alan Hahn concentrated mostly on Shumpert.
- Scott Schroeder, ever the authority on fringe NBA talent, has the best list of folks to attend yesterday's "free agent minicamp". Besides Bonzi, here are some names:
Others confirmed to be invited to the workout were guards Jerel McNeal, Will Conroy and Javaris Crittenton along with big men Cedric Simmons, Jeff Foote, Vernon Goodridge, Trent Plaisted, Ivan Johnson and Arinze Onuaku. McNeal, Crittenton, Goodridge, Johnson and Onuaku all played in the D-League last season.
Remember that the Knicks just snaggled the Erie Bayhawks of the D-League. They've got some roster spots to fill. A few of the guys are familiar from past Knick summer leagues, and some you may know from the D-League or brief NBA stints. Some of them are Bonzi Wells.
- Marc Berman wrote an "article" about Crittenton coming to work out, but really it was just a few words to remind you that he once did things with guns.
And that is all! Buy some hats!

Can't believe they're working out Bonzi Wells!
As for the articles, I wish they would cover everyone who worked out. I’d love to hear more about what they thought about Keith Benson, who I’m interested in (pause).
Iman Shumpert is growing on me.
He seems like he’ll be a stifling defender, and will be able to guard anyone from 1-3. He seems like a decent kid, too, so maybe he’ll work out all his offensive kinks.
Also, we should really work out Bismack!
He’s flying up and down the draft boards, probably largely because he didn’t attend any of the combines, but we’ll never know how long/mobile/athletic he is if we don’t try him out. I think a realistic projection for him is a more athletic Ronny Turif, which wouldn’t be bad at all.
yes, but lets be honest
if he falls to us, we have to take him. have to. the guys a center and we have… nobody
He'd be the only player I'd trade up for.
TD/Landry and our first. Our bench officially goes to hell, but you’ve got a great 3, 4, and 5 to build around, with 14 mil coming off the books after the year. I can deal with that. I can deal with that well.
Hell no
TD, Landry and our first for one pick?! Way too much for my liking. I mean, it’s been said here before, if we’re placing all our hope of the season on a rookie, well then we’re in trouble. Biyombo seems like a great player. I’d trade maybe Extra E and the pick to move into the lottery, but TD and Landry can’t both be given up
I said TD OR Landry
That’s what the " / " meant. it’s a sign signifying either or.
Write that down
Deep breaths man
Didn’t mean to offend you. I thought you meant it as a combination of the two. Still though, to be honest I wouldn’t be down for trading either of them unless it was to get in the top 5 or something
Also, I;m not placing my entire hope of the season on a rookie. That weight goes on Melo and Amare
Biyombo would just be the best addition. Not the savior.
Jeff Foote!
I need to know how unathletic he is and if he has any jump shot. Because otherwise, he’s great.
Bonzi Wells...
Holy shit… according to NBA Reference he averaged 32 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal per 36 minutes while maintaining a eFG% of 57 as a 22 year old rookie in 98. Small sample size but damn, talk about a disappointing career when you consider those numbers (and his lottery pick status). Has decent numbers but was a terrible 3 point shooter and is an old man now, i don’t see how he could help this team in any role

Only reason I'd like him
Is just to say Bonzi Wells is on our team.
But really, hasn’t played pro ball since 2009 and that was in Puerto Rico, so…. pass
i have a feeling it would be for a D-league spot
where a vet presence would be nice…
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."
The veteran presence he brings
would be like one of those 30-somethings who works retail with you when you’re in high school and shows you all the “tricks” like where to get stoned on your shift or how to take a shit without people noticing you’re gone
Meh. I guess he could get a training camp invite. But if we're gonna take the risk on Bonzi, we better take a risk on AI.
Invite them both to training camp and see how badly they want to win and what they’d sacrifice.
i can not think of one good reason to invite
AI to camp.
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

where mahmound abdul rauf is shooting lights out at age 40

Dude
he played thirty five total minutes as a rookie in ‘98. Per-36 stats mean nothing when they’re extrapolated from 35 minutes worth of action.
Still it's pretty impressive
He’s the Earl Barron of late 90’s swingmen.

some you may know from the D-League or brief NBA stints
and some you may know from pulling a gun on Gilbert Arenas

Iman would be perfect.
They can either play him at the 2 or groom him to run the point. I’d rather the latter; him and TD would make a heck of a defensive backcourt. And they each could alternate running the point on offense, with Melo doing most of the playmaking anyway.
But the kid has a big upside, and he can contribute immediately with his defensive skills. We really don’t need any offensive contribution in his rookie year. He can develop his offensive game organically, as he figures out how to fit in with Amare and Melo within the system. And I think that that’s preferable actually.
Last thing you want is for a gunner to come aboard with that being all he knows how to do. He’s simply not going to get the shots on this team. Its better to grab a defensive contributor who can handle the ball and that has great athleticism. That kinda guy can be groomed accordingly.

Successive comments from
Crackback and ChiaCrack is somewhat mind-boggling. Dare I say, it rivals successive comments from flossy, fuhry, and frilly?
Anyway, Shumpert. I like his potential alot too, but he definitely requires some grooming. He begs to differ, I know, but his college shooting numbers are not good, and every draft profile says that’s a weakness. Also, his decision-making supposed to be pretty questionable. With a 2nd round pick, hell yes! With #17… eh, that makes me a little nervous
hahahaha

Shooting can be improved dramatically in a relatively short period of time (a summer) if the work is put in. If he has the intensity of focus, he can get himself to a level where he can knock down the shots that he knows he’s going to get.
But its much harder to develop into a plus defender and to have ball-handling skills.
We have plenty of offense this year (Stat, Melo, Billups, TD, E can get hot, Landry should take a step…). We really don’t need scoring, nor do we really want a rookie to have that mentality.
We need a long, athletic wing defender that can get out and start/finish a break, and any explosive highlight dunks in between would be much appreciated. If he can be molded to run the point, he couldn’t be more ideal.
He seems young enough and dedicated enough to develop his jumper to where it needs to be. But his wing defense and ball-handling can be used right away.
by Crackback on Jun 11, 2011 7:18 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
agreed and rec'd
though not all in on shumpert… but the need for wing defender, break starter, yeah (faried, singleton, jujuan johnson)
by bucketsncents on Jun 11, 2011 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Very true
And hopefully he does mold into that. However, decision-making is a bit harder to fix. It can improve, but you look at a guy like Jamal Crawford who was a good player, but a pretty poor decision-maker before he got to the Hawks, he still has some issues with shot selection, and such. I mean, that’s after 9 years or so of bad habits, whereas Shumpert is only a rookie.
Iman is a really unique player and super intriguing, but seems to me he’s got a lot of work to do
nolan smith would be a bad pick at where we are at but i think he fits our team
coming from duke he is a good defensive player already which is what we should covert…. and he knows the Knicks system so there wouldn’t be a steep learning curve…. not to mention how smart of a guard he is
But I really don’t think our pick will make it through the season with us because whoever it is will probably be traded with Billups fields and douglas for either dwight of CP3.
duhon sucked he was more of a SG anyways
this isnt the same case
by BAD M33TS EVIL on Jun 10, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
he carried the ball up gave it up and stood behind the 3 point line
just like a SG would
by BAD M33TS EVIL on Jun 10, 2011 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Not really
when i see a point guard i see someone that handles the ball for a good 15 seconds and passes to get the assist Duhon was once he gets it past the line it would go to someone and he would then fill the role that shawne williams does by just being a catch and shoot player
by BAD M33TS EVIL on Jun 10, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Duhon was one of the league leaders in assists
So obviously he wasn’t just standing around. He didn’t hold it for 15 seconds because that’s not very useful to a fast-paced offense.
which brings me back to my initial point
I’m saying nolan smith is a whole different case because he is a legit point guard in our system and duhon would be a SG because we don’t run up and down as we used to.
by BAD M33TS EVIL on Jun 10, 2011 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions
He ran the pick and roll with David Lee a LOT
by superturboultra on Jun 10, 2011 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Basically Duhon's only "strength"
Was passing in the PnR. He was decent at that
I would rate him better than decent
He was good enough to keep starting, despite no other real assets to lend to the team. That has to rank at least around “very good”
by superturboultra on Jun 11, 2011 2:11 AM EDT up reply actions
I think it was either a choice of Nate "Shit PG Sandwich" Robinson or Chris "Shit PG Souffle" Duhon.
And Dantoni appreciates French cuisine.
Hahaha
OK well put. Maybe minutes isn’t the best indicator – I just happen to think he did a very good job on getting Lee the ball in just the right position on the p&r.
by superturboultra on Jun 12, 2011 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah actually on second thought
He was great at that. Considering defenses just zoned in on Lee knowing Duhon was not a threat at all going to the basket, and his 3 was shaky
i havent missed a jenkins home game in his college career
and we NEED him. He has other worldly body control going to the hoop. He can guard any point guard in the league. Dude can hit any shot on the court and has a crazy good mid range game. He can play off and on the ball. His first step can get him by most nba defenders. hes a superb passer and led the CAA in assists. we. need. jenkins. BTW he either goes by Charles or The Takeover but im sure hed take a liking to charmander.

rebounds droped becauseeee
his senior year he had a new coach who played a 1-3-1 zone. under pecoras man to man defense the previous 3 years and being on an undersized team he was playing 3s and 4s much bigger than him. Hofstras 6 foot 10 greg washington played the middle of the zone and ate every board
fuck them before they can fuck you
by turiafs beard on Jun 10, 2011 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions
he also played the point his senior year
after being an off the ball player for a majority of his first 3 years. for the most part he was at the top of the arc when possessions ended as opposed to being a wing player under the old coach. their starting PG transferred and this made CJ basically the only option to run the point with consistency. I believe the new defensive scheme and him playing the point led to the drop in rebounds. Hes tough as nails and built like an ox but he just really didnt have the chance to position himself to get the boards he had been able to get in years past..

Assuming we get some kind of pick in the 30-40 range
I’m leaning toward taking Vucevic and then grabbing Jenkins with the second pick. What I love about him is that defenses keyed on him like crazy and yet he still shot over 50% from the floor. Also, only averaged 14.5 shots per game. I’ve heard his point guard skills aren’t really there but still, at 6’3" 205 I think he can play shooting guard.
Sad thing is, I bet the Bulls take him with their 28 or 30 pick.
Alot of places had the Bulls taking Marshon Brooks
Which would make alot of sense for them. But maybe his stock has risen?
Jenkins is definitely impressive, but people say his PG skills are definitely questionable. Even though there aren’t a ton of pure points in this draft, I think I’d be more comfortable with someone like Reggie Jackson or Jimmer if he fell to us
Agreed
I think taking Charles Jenkins at some point in the draft is as obvious of a pick as possible. It’s so clear to me that he has huge NBA potential – perfect PG size, pretty good defender, excellent playmaker with excellent vision, very mature, high basketball IQ, one of the best shooters in the draft. There are no weaknesses in his game. I love him
i want more on vernon goodridge...
there was talk about him last year, and there are some clips of him out there. great size. strong. rugged with some agility.

Joe Alexander is crazy athletic. And that's about it lol
I guess, he can be developed into a defensive player due to his athleticism… but this dude is a massive bust. Milwaukee gave up this guy (Who they used a lotto pick on) after only 2 years.
I guess it wouldn’t be bad to have him as like 13-15 man on the bench.
His career didn't end when he left Milwaukee
He’s actually improved a fair amount since then (and lost a bit of that athleticism, on the down side).

Really?
I’m not going around, looking for the article I saw it in, but you’d have to be crazy not to think we don’t want another pick. Hell, we’re bringing in Bonzi Wells to try out. The team is trying to fill a roster any way they can.
yea, there's no need
of course they’re in the market for another pick, the team blows and needs all the help it can get. This draft is pretty deep from top to bottom and a rotation player should be there in the 2nd.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
liking the way things are developing...
if we keep…
amare, melo, billups, landry, turiaf, shawne, TD…
and bring over jerome jordan…
and sign young, minimum salary, upside prospect FA’s like cedric simmons (long and agile as hell) and javaris (big, quick PG with handle and ability to get into the lane)…
and draft smart (fredette, faried, singleton, jeremy tyler, jujuan, benson, brooks, shumpert, jenkins)…
and pick up one still useful veteran FA with our MLE (tayshawn, dalembert, redd, battier, thaddeus)…
we could be looking at a very good, very balanced offensively/defensively, young/veteran team.
