Wednesday Knicks Workout Lineup
Today's workout doesn't include any big names, but it does have some of the coolest. Here's the lineup, via Lord Thomas of the House of Dee:
Mustapha Farrakhan, G, 6-4, 181, Virginia, senior
Vlad Moldoveanu, F, 6-9, 215, American, senior
Jared Mintz, F, 6-9, 243, Lafayette, senior
Corey Stokes, G, 6-5, 220, Villanova, senior
Mustapha Farakhan, besides having perhaps the ballerest first name on the planet, is the grandson of Louis Farrakhan. You certainly don't see that every day. The closest the Knicks have gotten to a descendant of a religious leader is Lavor Postell, who was Chuck E. Cheese's nephew. Meanwhile, Vlad Moldoveanu is Romanian, which should be easy to remember because he shares a name with the tallest mountain in Romania. Jared Mintz and I have a mutual friend on Facebook. Corey Stokes is from Bayonne, which means I'd probably refer to him as "Louie Lastik".
And that's who's working out today. There's not a projected draft pick among 'em, but they seem like decent Bayhawk candidates.

Yeah, definitely the same dude.
But my original joke was something about one of us probably going to summer camp with this guy.
Stokes' nickname
at Villanova was The Bayonne Bomber. However, when he drained a three, which was often, I said “Stokes, strokes.”

i forgot about him already
there’s always next year when he’ll be a lottery pick.

The What.
Deep like the mind of Farrakhan, A motherfuckin rap phenomenon.
Anyways Corey Stokes tends to disappear ALOT in games.
Lewis Farrakhan's grandson? Oy.
I haven’t felt this conflicted as a Jewish Knicks fan since I found out that Nazr Muhammad’s first name was pronounced like “Nazi”.

To be fair
Lewis Farrakhan has, like, a thousand grandchildren.
zing!
Probably true though. Malcolm X got tired of that shit, then he got shot.
We need Vlad Moldoveanu on this team
if only to piss off Dziedzic

Although Burks has apparently been training with Chauncey and could still be worked out at some point
And maybe has been worked out already and I just didn’t notice.
ANYWAY I’m still wondering that.
Brooks has been rising because scouts are comparing his game to Kobe’s. But I think Burks is a much better prospect.
That Burks cat can ball.
Watched him torch a few teams this year, but I’m not sold how effective he’ll be playing on the same court with two guys who need the ball.

their board changes too drastically each new mock to take seriously

I'm sure GMs are changing their minds too and have a handful of guys they're considering
Mockups are usually pretty accurate, but tend to overvalue extreme prospects and injury risks
99% of GMs have their mind made up on who they're going to draft if he's there
that Burks was in the top 10 and now at #17 with Brooks going in front of him is just asinine.
Brooks may be helping his stock with these workouts, so he’s not a 2nd round pick. But why have Burks ahead of him all this time in the first place? Doesn’t make any sense.

Yeah, good chance it's wrong
We’ll find out soon enough. Jimmer is now projected at #7 to the Kings. Workouts can make a big difference, especially to bad GMs. Why else do you think Darko and Yi get drafted so high?
I'd definitely take him if he's availible...
at this point I’d want to go with Brooks or Burks if available, and if neither of them are, try to get Darius Morris/Reggie Jackson/Kenneth Faried and try to snag Malcolm Lee in the second round.
Damn Burks is sick. I'd be happy, I never even thought he'd be available at 17. To me he's perfect for Milwaukee.
His lack of jumpshot is kind of a bad fit, but apparently he’s a great all around player. If he’s the next Brandon Roy, then that would be awesome.
Also, we could work out a deal for Biyombo for Landry and Burks (with like Milwaukee or Charlotte). I know, I’m obsessed with Biyombo :)
We all are, man
He’s just too good of a fit not to work out for us. If we get him and he works with Billups all summer catching passes, then he’ll be really good.

I still get the feeling
That he’s a bit of a project. He definitely has the tools to be a lock-down defender in the paint, and if this happens, we improve drastically. But he might also foul like crazy in his first season, have trouble rotating on D and with help defense. If anybody knows more about this I’d be glad to know, but it’s not like he’ll be the defense only version of Dwight Howard right from the start.

This is the first time I'm following the draft this closely
So can somebody with a little bit more experience tell me if it makes any sense to follow the mock drafts they have on Draft Express or any other website? I mean seriously, us taking Burks? Jimmer going 7th?
And how large of a role have workouts played in the past? It’s obvious that a lot of players’ stock is rising because of workouts, but borderline 1st round picks going in the top 15?

mocks are just a guide
the top 5 picks are generally correct (not really the order tho), but after that its really anyone’s guess. Draft express is probably the best since they do a good job of compiling their combine measurements and some good scouting reports.
Workouts play a role. How big is generally an indicator of how dumb or smart a GM is, at least in the first round. More of it is the interviews and such as the attitude of a player and his dedication to actually maximizing his natural talent is a better indicator of who’s going to pan out. That’s the stuff you never will hear about.
In the 2nd round it’ll get you steals and Landry Fields.

DraftExpress is usually pretty good, but coming to which teams want who, Chad Ford is by far the best
Mainly because he uses sources and crap to find out what teams are actually thinking.
but I still refuse

It's actually pretty strange
Paying for the analysis of something that’s going to happen in a week anyway? It’s like paying $25 to see power rankings going into the NBA playoffs. Unless you’re thinking of betting that Jimmer will go top 10, it doesn’t make any sense. Are there people that actually pay to become an Insider because of Chad Ford’s mock drafts?

the price has come way down and now comes with the magazine too
There are deals to get it all for $3 a year
As long as you don’t mind when they secretly charge you halfway through your first year for two more years of service.

Or how at the time you were on an Americorps stipend, and the $70 they charged puts you under your bank account’s limit, but you don’t know that and keep using your debit card, racking up a $24 fee for each little $5 purchase…

people do mock drafts
as a way to pass the time w a i t i n g for a draft that seemingly never comes! The anticipation gets so great that everybody has to make a mock just to try to predict how things will go.
Guys’ stock definitely goes up and down but as most are not privy to the way the workouts and interviews go, a lot of it is unknown to the general public.
Oh, and when it comes to the average mock, look at the centers, and divide the number in half. For example, if NBAdraft.net has Vucevic going at 42, he’ll go at 21. If they have Biyombo going at 12, he’ll go at 6. That only goes for centers. Every year there’s a guy who was rated high but gets pushed out of the way by all the late risers. That guy usually ends up pretty good.
True
That was weird. There’s always guys that fall unexpectedly. Sometimes there’s a medical reason we don’t know about. Alabi had hepatitis, DeJuan Blair had no ACL’s. I don’t know what happened with Whiteside.
Whiteside was reportedly very immature, and teams passed over him thinking he’s not ready for the NBA. That, and he was/ is very raw. Lots of Marcus Camby comparisons thrown around last year though…

I'd consider T-Mac
if I was the GM. I still think he has one good year left in him. Definitely not Vince Carter though.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Until just this moment I'd never heard him called "Isaac" and had to look him up.
Why you gotta throw a curve like that, stingy?
Yeah!
Although I don’t know the “Cock” would really “fill” any of our “holes”.
I think he's a UFA after this season
(correct me if I’m wrong though). I can’t see him starting with Carmelo on this team though. And who knows if he wants to come back after we traded him.
I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.
Vince Lombardi
Al Harrington would come back a million times
Ewing wants back
Mark Jackson came back and still wanted back after retirement
I think the only guy who’s pissed is Felton
and he was only here for half a season
Not that it will happen, but I’m certain Gallo would come back. He took the trade news better than anyone, saying he had no hard feelings and that it was a business.
He kinda deserves to be a #1 or #2 option, though
Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!
It only would feel right having Gallo back, wouldn't it?
Maybe it was just aa result of being the first draft pick after the Isiah era, but something always felt special about Gallo with the Knicks.
If things worked out right, I could honestly see Gallo and Chandler being back with the Knicks
you mean how al harrington was only here half a season?
Yeah, but he also went back to the Pacers with no hard feelings
I’m not very excited about playing Amare as a center. Nor is he.
Nor is D’Antoni, really, although out of the three of us he seems to be the most into it.

for what its worth
alan hahn just tweeted that rumors are turning up about the knicks trying to trade with the pacers for the 15th pick…. which confuses me, because we’d probably have to trade the 17th pick i’d guess…. but i’m all confused… are we trading shawne williams?
/// aighttho.com \\\/// twitter.com/aighttho \\\
why Shawne Williams?
He’s a pending FA and can’t be traded.
I’d guess it’d be the #17 + cash, or a future second. The idea of buying another pick and keeping the #17 is interesting.
Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!
I DON'T KNOW WHY SHAWNE WILLIAMS!!!!
because what else do we have that they want that we have to offer!?? i want two picks! i want three picks! five picks!
/// aighttho.com \/// twitter.com/aighttho \
Cash, basically
Remember that the Pacers and Grizzlies agreed on McRoberts + 1st (which is now the #15) for Mayo before the deadline, but it didn’t go through in time. Sets a standard of sorts but I also doubt the Knicks part with a rotation player just to move up two spots – that’d be unprecedented.
guessing cash + maybe a future second. should be easy enough to do with someone, even if it’s not the Pacers.
Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!
i hope you're right
good remembery on that failed trade.
/// aighttho.com \/// twitter.com/aighttho \
probably one of those if [so and so] is there at #15, we'll trade up
its really too close to go ahead this far and do it, unless its an outright grab of the pick without giving up #17

I wrote this in the draft thread, but Hahn is just repeating what some random draft website reported.
The link is in the other thread, I think.
I don't know what kind of disaster our guard rotation would be after that, but it probably wouldn't be pretty.
But everything I hear about Jimmer as the days get closer to the draft makes me want him more and more.
Don’t pause. You heard me.
Cue the soft lights and break out the Vaseline, I like where this is going.

I'd say it depends on if we get another pick
tho you kinda gotta sort of include Derrick Brown as a potential Landry replacement.

May be a random question...
…but does anyone know the recipe for the Knicks’ protein shake or smoothie?

As I recall
They actually customize them for each player based on measurements taken by a little device that collects sweat (during training camp).
