Why the Knicks Should Draft....

Nikola Vucevic

Why Has He Risen -

When the Knicks season ended after being swept by Boston Nikola was a 2 round prospect. Since his STRONG showing in the Draft Combine in Chicago with the rest of the draft hopefuls he has skyrocketed up draft boards, why? Well the biggest reason is because this IS a weak draft. Another because most of the centers at the top of the draft are inexperienced and quite honestly we don't know half as much about them as we do the USC product. When all is said and done I think he will be the pick at 17

Offense -

The 20 year old center from Montenegro has a pretty offensive game the thing I am most impressed by was his footwork. It normally takes young 7 footers a while before they get comfortable with the NBA game but this kid is really polished and has post moves galore. He would be a really good Pick and Roll center. He is not a Juggernaut but he is also not Jared Jeffries. He averaged 17.1 ppg his junior year at USC. During one of his recent workouts dude knocked down 11 straight college threes which I'm sure made Mike D'Antoni have dreams of this kid falling to 17. Bottom line is he has a nice touch, can get to the rim has really good mechanics and puts in alot of time getting better.

Defense -

Positional Defender, this is the term all of the scouts have used to describe his defense. "Not a Shot Blocker" is another thing I keep hearing. But do we need a shot blocker? NO. Do we need a guy that can stay in front of his man prevent Amare from taking a beating a grab 10 boards? YES. His basketball IQ is really good meaning he understands help defense(one of the toughest things for a rookie to wrap their heads around)

How Does he Fit -

He is a great fit because he compliments both Amare and Turiaf. If Nikola and Amare are on the floor together then his focus is to rebound and defend. If he is on the floor with Turiaf then he is the main scoring option down low. He could start or come of the bench for us. There are alot of variables that will change this (draft day trades, Jerome Jordan) But with our lack of size how can you pass him up.

The Biggest Reason To take it-

Other then our glaring hole at the 5, walsh will buy a second rounder at the latest and PG's such as Sleby, Inam, and Darius Morris Might be ther truthfully speaking 1 of those 3 will be in the 2nd round but there is also Charles Jenkins who will definitely be there. Unfortionately if we take a PG with the 17th i dont think the same talent will be there with the bigs in the second.

Totally agree with this

I always though of him as a completely sucky defender and rebounder, but then I found out I got him mixed up with Motiejunas. If we leave this draft with Morris and Vucevic I will be extremely excited.

I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious.

Agreed

except the “weak draft” part. Its not, especially since there’s good players potentially available in the 2nd round.

weak up top

With a lot of unknown. But it seems deep, with rotation players into the second round.

by mindfeck on Jun 21, 2011 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I would really like this pick.

And I really like having a center group of V, Turiaf and Jordan.

And if we buy a 2nd rounder and have our choice of Shumpert, Selby or Morris… that would just be gravy.

i would love to get selby in the 2nd round.

Good, so he might be there in the second round

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

yeah

guys who don’t play well anywhere after leaving HS are exactly who you want on your playoff team.

by mindfeck on Jun 21, 2011 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Guys with starter potential are exactly who you want to take flyers on in the second round

as opposed to the usual player who will never step onto a NBA court

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

you mean like

leuer, reggie jackson, darius morris, charles jenkins, nolan smith?

by mindfeck on Jun 21, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

None of them half half of Selby's potential

and only one or two will make it to the second round

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

*have half

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

but if the guy showed shit in college...

and shit in workouts as reported… is that a good sign? or a bad one?

i’d lean towards jenkin, shumpert or morris.

by bucketsncents on Jun 21, 2011 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Except for jumping

It’s not clear how Shumpert is better than Darius Morris in any way. I hope the Knicks aren’t just trying to keep Happy Walters Happy, like they did when they released Corey Brewer.

workouts

to me are the least important.

So...

You’re against potential?

by Crackback on Jun 21, 2011 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

workouts feel somewhat overrated to me

i mean, players have bad days… its a strange situation (nothing like a game) and there is a ton of pressure.

I feel like the full body of work is more important.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

by gbaked on Jun 21, 2011 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Shooting can be developed. He can handle the rock, start and finish on the break, and play lockdown defense on 3 positions. His body is NBA ready, he’s lengthy, and he’s explosively athletic.

A back court with Shumpert and TD would be fantastic defensively. And if we went small and athletic with Shumpert, TD, Landry, Melo and Stat we would be tough to deal with.

by Crackback on Jun 21, 2011 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

yea of those 3, Shumpert is the best

he’s the biggest, his shooting’s severely underrated and he’s the most polished defensively. He’s also gotten better every year

did anyone do a "know a prospect"

thingy for this dude?

Doesn't smoke or Drink...

According to the NYPost, he doesn’t smoke or drink. That’s good enough for me. Chances are he has 0 tattoo on him. Not that I against tattoo, but it does make players look more like thug than sport player.

I changed my blog name to Anti Dolan
In Dolan I DO NOT trust.

what, you don't like Melo's "warna brotha" tattoo?

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

by knickswin on Jun 21, 2011 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be down with that

I disagree that you simply go for need tho, that’s how you pass on good players. But if the Knicks feel they can get the guard they want later on, that’s fine. Morris is a good player.

o yea i know. but what im saying is unless thompson or jimmer is there we should go for

mk morris or nikola because one of them are bound to be there and both will have solid nba careers

should we be sleeping on jujuan johnson as much as we are...

if the kid put on 20 lbs, what would we be saying. he’s got actual length, huge hops and a real live offensive repertoire.

i know i haven’t given him enough love because of his lack of girth, but maybe he’s our size?

by bucketsncents on Jun 21, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I think a lot of concern is that he doesn't bang

He won’t do a heck of a lot for Amare other than the occasional backside block

by fsucj2431 on Jun 21, 2011 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree that we need a more bangerish girthier guy...

but i’d still much rather we draft jujuan over a small with our first (and currently only) pick… if for no other reason than to be our first 3/4 off the bench with scoring and defensive ability.

by bucketsncents on Jun 21, 2011 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but if you could draft amare right now, would you?

looking at jujuan, other than being maybe 10 lbs lighter, they have very similar stats.

amare was 6’8.5 with wingspan 7’1.75 with vert of 35 bench press 12 agility 11.19

jujuan is 6’9 with winspan of 7’2 with vert of 38 bench press 15 and agility 11.21

very interesting. jujuan outshines him in all measurements except weight (which is an issue) but with all the talk of drafting on talent and upside, this kid has young amare written all over him… plus he’s actually played against talent whereas amare came out of high school.

just saying.

by bucketsncents on Jun 21, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

JuJuan is not a sexy pick like Bitchsmack Bismal or the Vulva Kid from Montenegro!

Just your run of the mill player who will be a solid player in the NBA ho hum! Knicks fans want Beasts. No one other than Colangelo thought Amar’e was going to be a beast. But JuJuan could very well turn out to be one of the top 2 or 3 players in this draft class. But just remember the beasts drew Gooden and Chris Wilcox, who were taken ahead of Amar’e. Hell we passed on him in that draft too. Could we end up making the same mistake this year? Hmmmmmm!

by Robert Curre on Jun 21, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you mean if you could draft Amare coming out of high school onto this team as it is right now?

That’s a good question but Amare was thought to be a better prospect than JuJuan is. As you probably know, there is more to basketball than measurables

by fsucj2431 on Jun 21, 2011 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but the question is why?

coming out of high school, all you really have to go on is measurables ‘cause the high school competition is, well, high school. i’m not saying jujuan is on his way to being amare-like, but he’d be a very good pick up as quality depth.

by bucketsncents on Jun 21, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point.

I think guys who are later bloomers (college players after there freshman year) kind of get lost in the wash. If they’re that good why did it take so long for them to shine?? Not that I necessarily believe this but I think it is definitely in the back of talent evaluators minds.

by fsucj2431 on Jun 21, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

There is definitely a bias

against college players that weren’t highly rated in high school. Even if they have put in a couple of really good seasons, it’s like they don’t get taken seriously if they weren’t highly recruited.

by fuhry on Jun 21, 2011 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I've been mentioning him in every draft discussion we've had here

I just don’t think the Knicks are too interested there. If he slips to the 2nd round they might be tho.

A big reason Vucevic's stock rose

Is that he was thought of as a 6’10" 230 pound unathletic power forward prospect. But at the combine, the guy came in at 7 feet and 260, big wingspan. As a power forward prospect, he’s meh. As a center prospect, pretty damn good.
