With the 17th Pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks Select...Iman Shumpert!

Photo

This is a Mad-Lib post!

The Knicks just drafted: Iman Shumpert, 6'6" PG/SG out of Georgia Tech

He looks: Not here!

They passed on: Chris Singleton and Marshon Brooks, to name a few.

I feel: Surprised, but kind of pleased, actually.

The crowd's reaction was: Violent.

More later!

Update: 11:14: Also Josh Harrellson from Kentucky. He's tall.

He’s a defensive stopper, and although he’s not supposed to be a great shooter, he shot 21 for 25 in the Knicks three point shooting drill. Rumor has it that the Knicks wanted him to stop working out after he worked out for them. They got the man Donnie wanted, and I have complete faith in him.

Also, think of Trevor Ariza, Shane Battier, Jason Kidd, Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant...

none of these guys were shooters, now they’re all pretty good. It’s a very learnable skill.

I'm not so concerned about his shooting ability

because you’re right, that can be learned. I’m more concerned about his shot selection, and what that says about his basketball IQ. Apparently he attempted 5 3s per game even though he only hit 28%. That’s… not good. And unlearning those bad habits can be a lot harder than learning to shoot.

You can't go off stats alone

it was b)

ther was no ther viable scoring option on that team. At all. Which is also why he led his team in assists, points, rebounds, steals…. i mean shit. They guy isnt jordan. But put him on a team where he doesnt have to jack up shots. He can be a very strong player. Im feeling good about shumpert

Took a Russian history class

Creation of the empire nation to the fall of Tsarism… It’s funny they can refer to anybody as terrible… Or great. Catherine was downright horrific, by any standards. Peter is the only one who can even be considered as mediocre in terms of leadership and at the very least equal treatment for all. He may have killed many, but the gentry weren’t excluded from his wrath… If anything they took the brunt of it while the serfs were able to maintain and somewhat thrive within their community as much as possible at the time.

Landry and Carmelo are excellent rebounders

so is Gerald Wallace for whoever he plays for. But 6"7 rebounders don’t solve your rebounding problems. They make up for your deficiencies in the frontcourt.

Uh, what?

How does a stellar rebounder not help solve your rebounding problems? And what does it matter whether he’s 6’7" or 6’11"? The man can rebound. He’s going to rebound big time in the league. That’s a skill that translates directly from the college game to the NBA.

Like his 18 rebounds against Florida?

His 12 rebounds against Ohio St? His 17 rebounds against Louisville? His 13 rebounds against Richmond? If you watch him play he is not rebound just because of the competition. I’ve posted this before, but if you look at this chart, Faried isn’t just a good rebounder. He is far, far ahead of everyone else.

by EtSuKe on Jun 24, 2011 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

its not who its against

its who’s on the team. He’s by far the tallest player on his team. That’s why he gets all the rebounds.

he's not just a PG

he’s a PG, a SG and a SF. On a team that likes to play a short rotation, versatile defensive minded players are great.

Singleton can't even dribble

he’d never be a PG.

Really, I can’t see why Singleton vs. Shumpert is a problem. I could make a case for either. Walsh felt that the Perimeter defender was more of a need and I can’t disagree.

Shumpert was their boy and they gave him a promise after he worked out for them.

I’d trust that judgement over an FSU homer

Hmm. From Alan Hahn's twitter
Shumpert caught Walsh’s eye at Chicago combine when he shut down Jimmer Fredette in one-on-one coverage.
Donnie Walsh obviously very high on Shumpert. Says he can be a rotation player right now. Decision to pass on Singleton bc of need at 2G.
As for knock on Shumpert’s shooting, Walsh says he shot well at Knicks workout. “His shot’s not broken.”
Plan is that Shumpert can defend 2’s next to Chauncey and then Chauncey can play 2 on offense and Shumpert can play pick-n-roll.

QUICK analysis

On the offensive end, Coach John Calipari has creatively found ways to take advantage of Harrellson by using him in ball-screen actions and dribble handoffs to free his teammates for shots. He’s comfortable catching the ball on the perimeter and shows good decision making skills, as evidenced by the fact that he has as many assists as turnovers this season, which is rare for a big man and ranks him 4th amongst all centers in our database in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Harrellson will never be a player who will get many post-up opportunities (only 7% of his possessions this season have been in the post) or really have any plays called for him, but he’s been very efficient with his touches, scoring over 1.1 points per possession on the season, and shooting an impressive 61% from the field. He also shows great activity and effort on the offensive glass, grabbing 5.2 offensive rebounds per forty minutes pace adjusted (3rd highest of all centers in our database), and utilizing both hands to finish around the rim on put-backs

Harrellson scouting from a fan of the player/pick

Hey guys, it’s been a while. I figured I’d weigh in here and give you a bit of background on Harrellson, who I bet I saw about 20 times this year. I really think he’s a great fit for this team. He’s an animal on the glass, the O glass most of all, not a great finisher, but doesn’t finish automatically either, he will reset the ball. He’s able to operate up top in a high pick offense or a high handoff offense much like Turiaf did, with better passing in my own opinion, and he even has the occasional NBA 3 pointer range, not his best shot, but he’s ok at it. He sets great screens. He will require zero offensive touches, but he can score, Sullinger couldn’t handle him in the Sweet 16, he won Kentucky that game.

And he’s a pretty good defender, not great, but he knows how to get his body in the way and play with bigs. And he showed some talent in transaction. I really think this pick will work out, he won’t be a star, but he gives us things we lack and doesn’t take away from our talent. I’m optimistic we all will be happy with him as the season goes on, he got so much better week after week this season, finding his game, I think he can get a little burn for us right away and hopefully grow into a rotation down low for us as the season goes on.

Remember, he was on a team that played with 3 guys who will probably be top 20 picks when they get drafted, he knows how to be a role player on a team with NBA talent, that is a rare commodity from a college kid. I give the draft right now a B/B+, here’s hoping that next season is great!

Anytime!

Just happy to actually know something worth sharing!

I think most people would have been surprised if they watched UK’s season to see how much Harrellson helped Knight get his points. As the season went on, they really had him setting on ball screens a lot, and trusting him as a tall outlet to reset if initial penetration failed and he can follow penetration well on the O glass. He’s heady. I think he helps great players be great, which is a nice player to have.

by Wilson Chandlerstick Maker on Jun 23, 2011 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Like a beefier Turiaf, perhaps?

At any rate, picking up somebody with his size at 45 is nice. I’d be uncomfortable going into the season with Jordan and Turiaf being the only guys to spell whomever ends up at the starting 5.

In many ways, very similar to Turaif

Doesn’t turn it over, makes good passes. Probably not as good at help D as Turiaf right now, it’s not something UK really did much of last year. But I think Harrellson will rebound better, which has to help.

I agree I was uncomfortable with our size before today, too. I honestly wanted the Knicks to get Jorts in this draft, I’m very happy we did. I’m not a UK fan actually, but I tend to watch them play a lot since they became an NBA factory (plus i am a Memphis fan so watching Coach Cal comes natural). He impressed me.

I think it’s likely we notice little difference between the two this year, and maybe Harrellson can be a slightly better fit if we get the best case out of him.

Of course all that will really matter in the end is if he can control the paint well enough to help us win playoff games, which is the hardest thing to predict out of a college big man defender, but right now, I think the pick makes good sense.

by Wilson Chandlerstick Maker on Jun 24, 2011 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

This I am fully happy with.

Hopefully help D is something he can get acquainted to, but I wouldn’t expect it to magically develop after training camp or anything. It’ll be a process, but fuck, he’s a rookie. That’s the game.

Any info on his injury history? Hopefully he doesn’t take after Uncle Ronny in that respect, too.

by Thelonious Dunk on Jun 24, 2011 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Not very injury prone

He’s built country strong, like a basketball Adam Dunn, hard to injure a guy like that. Don’t think he missed a game or even part of a game due to injury last year, which is really the only year he played non-scrub minutes.

Had a lot of conditioning problems early in his career that made him a scrub-time guy, but he got worked like a mule last offseason when he got serious about playing and did ok/good with conditioning this season. UK was SO bad at backup center, he was forced into big minutes due to lack of options (they went 6-7 deep a lot of games).

Given the NBA and our system, he may not need to be able to go more then 20-24 minutes a game unless he keeps working on that conditioning. But I’m more worried about his stamina then his health, he won’t be as brittle a Turiaf, I am very confident.

I think your analysis is right on

Now, I’m not sure that he’ll be able to handler bigger bigs defensively. But he plays hard. If he gets into slightly better shape, I think he will eventually learn to handle them at least somewhat.

I really think this might have been a major reach. I'm not necessarily mad b/c I like his potential and ability to defend but it's not my top choice.

I wanted Moteijunas the whole time and I really think we could’ve gotten Motiejunas along with Flynn for Douglas and Cash.

I think Shump was kind of a safe pick. But I really wanted Walsh to do something crazy. But about 2 hours before the draft I said I think Walsh will be going with a safe pick. I was right. But I was thinking more of Markeiff.

David Khan fucked this up for us

He told everyone that he’s gonna pick Kanter at 2, and then picked fucking Derrick Williams when he already has Derrick Williams on his roster in a guy named Michael Beasley. If he picked Kanter, everyone wouldve slid and we probably wouldve ended up with a solid big. honestly, I was pissed when they took Shumpert, but he was the best guy available. Most mocks had either Vuvecic, Markieff, or a guy like Burks/ Kemba available. None were and while JaJuan Johnson might end up better, this guy fills a need I guess. I wish we couldve bought Selby or Jenkins or something though.

by Gallinari's Barbershop on Jun 24, 2011 12:27 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

No1 actually believed Kanter was going 2.

What screwed us over was Kanter going 3 (instead of Knight), Cleveland selecting Thompson and Charlotte getting #7. With Kanter at 3, it meant that Utah was guaranteed to go guard at 12. Cleveland taking Thompson meant that either Charlotte or Detroit would most likely take Biyombo. And the biggest changer was Charlotte getting #7 and Milwaukee trading down. That took another big off the board for each team after because Sac and Milwaukee would’ve both gone guard, leaving one of Markeiff or Vucevic for us.

But too late now. It’s done and nothing can be done about it. Just to be happy with Shumpert and Harrellson.

by oldskoolewings on Jun 24, 2011 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Everyone is hyping his athletic ability as well and supposedly has good shooting mechanics

This is a plus, and if there’s a coach who can put those 2 assets together, it’s MDA. He does have the potential to become an explosive scorer – albeit streaky at the outset, but at least we won’t be looking for it and will be pleasantly surprised when it happens. I’ll look at the bright side cuz I’ve never seen him play, and he already fills a role which is pretty much all we could’ve asked of this draft. Joshua Harrellson got a B! on CBS Sportsline. So yeah, neither pick was sexy, but we already got flashy scorers

by screamedia on Jun 24, 2011 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok ok

I can see the case for Shumpert athletically. But does this make TD redundant? I don’t get Walsh’s comment that a rebounder like Faried is just a “luxury”. Felt like rebounding (especially offensive) was just as big a need as defense, if not bigger, and it’s not like Faried was a total slouch in that regard either. Though maybe he’d have trouble with the types of players he’d have to cover, whereas I don’t see that being an issue with Shumpert. Alright I think I’m halfway towards talking myself into Shumpert, but seriously, does TD get moved now for a pg?

by shadrach_minkins on Jun 24, 2011 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Not neccessary

First off Iman is not going to just slide into the NBA. He’s got way more holes in his game than TD. Secondly, the Knicks are not so deep that they can really afford to be selling low on dwtdd.

by superturboultra on Jun 24, 2011 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

Honeslty, it was Fields contract that made him untouchable

It’s very small and he’s not coming due for a big ass raise at the same time CP3 and the like expire. If the plan is to get a 3rd max player, which it seems to be, then Fields was the one we had to keep for cap considerations.

by Teutoknicks on Jun 24, 2011 1:17 AM EDT reply actions

A little disappointed I guess.

For a team that has a few holes and needs value, it seems like we reached on both picks we ended up with. Shumpert was projected to go anywhere higher than 17 in any mock I saw… and Harrellson was not really projected to get drafted (I know the second round is a crapshoot though). I know we didn’t draft him… but still, 45 seems like higher than he was expected to go.

I know both fill a need for us… but I’d much rather end up with guys who were expected to go higher in the draft and we got at a “bargain” rather than the other way around.

Nothing against both guys and they may work out fine… just feel meh about it.

The only other player I’d have wanted at #17 was Selby and he fell to #49 and might have a long-term injury issue, plus Shumpert is taller. It’s all up to whether Weber can teach him to shoot or not.

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

For any advance stat guys:

Harrellson was 13th in the NCAA last year in win shares per 40 minutes of all players who played 20 minutes a game (14.3). He achieved that with the 9th lowest usage rate of all players who played 20 minutes a game (9.2%). If you like the advanced stats, it shows he can do what it takes to get W’s without using up many shots, which I happen to think is going to be key from our complimentary players.

For those curious, the list of players with similarly low usage rates last year is oddly very heavy with top NCAA teams, so it’s not just a factor of Harrellson being one of just a few guys who played such a small offensive role on a big time winning team. And of course the win shares stat includes players from teams who had equal or better seasons then UK did.

It’s by no means justification in and of itself that he’s a good pick, but hopefully another reason for optimism he can pan out into a good role player for us and help us win a few games.

Bummed all over again

Checked those draftexpress stats… Faried was #1 by a healthy margin in win share / 40. Also checked PER rankings (now again, not saying he’s THAT good but…..)

  1. - Kyrie Irving (32.5)
  2. - Derrick Williams (32.5)
  3. - Kenneth Faried (34.7)

well faried should have been drafted top 10 then huh? :)

nah but in reality. OUr needs were (and in this order)
1. Center (overall / defensive)
2. Guard depth (defensive)
3. melo/amare depth

faried would have been nice, but he just wouldnt have gotten a lot of burn. Plain and simple. Vucevic was out, so we went with our nexxt best move. Shumpert impressed in one on one workouts when he shut down freddette. and blew everyone out in athletic combine testing. Not to mention he lead his team in all important categories. Did he force shots, hell yea, and that was his only weakness. On our team, he wont have to force shots. Only his strongest attributes will be needed. Rebounding, defense, open shot, fast break. 40+ in VERTICAL. imagine what it is running on a fast break!

This will probably display how much of a Faried fan I was....

but I think he IS one of the 10 best in this draft (especially this draft), easily. Even though Fields is a GREAT rebounder for his position I would rank rebounding right up there with size and defense as needs for the team. Knicks are one of the worst rebounding teams in the league, but I just don’t see that brought up as much as the defense, which just looks worse than it is because of the pace they play at (more shots means more points for our team and theirs). Statistically Faried is the best prospect in the draft, but even if you discount the stats, look at how far he was able to take that Morehead State team. I thought he filled a need and was easily the best player available at that spot. I get nervous when a pick starts to get justified on workouts and not what they did on the court, but I think D’antoni may be right that the criticism on Shumpert’s shooting is over-blown. His form doesn’t look bad, and he had to take a ton of bad shots on that GT team. Compare his FT% to Rondo coming out of college (another athletic guard who’s primary concern was his shooting ability). Shumpert was over 80% while Rondo was under 60%. I’m beginning to think Shumpert can be a very good shooting guard.

Love the picks or hate the picks, as it stands now our center line is Ronny Turiaf, Jerome Jordan, and Josh Harrellson.

A pretty likeable line if you ask me. The bearded French guy who sounds kind of Jamaican and makes hilarious faces, the extremely lanky guy who sounds Jamaican is actually Jamaican, and the pot-bellied Missourian who wears jean shorts. I mean, come on.

true. lol

But two of em have fire. So the crowd will llike them. And we still have free agency (whenever the agreement happens) to go after a more experianced center.
