MLE time... let's round things out...

it came to me in a dream (well, not really)... and it still keeps our flexibility for next year (which i still don't want to blow on one guy)

let's say the MLE will be about 6 million... we split the MLE for

1) kurt thomas- picture perfect to mentor jorts, and can still score as a 4 on the P & R

2) ryan hollins- young length for the shot blocking that harrellson doesn't bring

3) redd/crawford/jr smith/reggie williams (whoever will fit)- offense off the bench for when melo or stat sit

this gives us a rotation

1- billups/TD/rautins

2- shumpert (yes, he starts)/redd or craw or jr or reggie

3- melo/landry/d. brown (yes, resign him)

4- stat/shawne/kurt

5- harrellson (yes, he'll earn it)/hollins/turiaf/jordan (unless we can unload him for a pick)

let the rest go, or buy them out (balkman)

this lineup i think can contend. mix of young and old, defense and offense

Eh.

I don’t like how everybody wants Shumpert starting over Fields already. The guy hasn’t played one NBA game and people are saying he should start right away? Screw that. He has to prove himself in training camp first, just like Landry did. If he earns the job, then great. More power to him. Also, resign Derrick Brown? Did we forget about Bill Walker? He has a ridiculously cheap option that they should pick up. He’s way better than Brown anyways. As for free agency, I don’t want to sign too many players. I’d like to have at least one or two roster spots open by the start of the season. Speaking of free agents, I want the Knicks to give Bonzi Wells a chance to prove himself. I have a thing for NBA comeback attempts.

This depends on Landry

The way Landry finished the season, he was losing minutes to Roger Mason and Anthony Carter. Shumpert is much better than those two.
I think Landry’s instincts and basketball IQ will help him keep his spot, but he’s gotta pull a Stella and get his groove back.
And the lasting image of the offseason is Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen having their way with our guards. Landry’s a good defender, but Ray Allen’s savvy got the best of him and right now Shumpert may be the only one on the team who can D Rondo.

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Jun 25, 2011 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

He wasn’t the Landry Fields we saw at the start of the season by the end of the season. But, that doesn’t mean we should forget the beginning of his year either. He was easily the steal of the draft. Every rookie hits a rookie wall at some point, and his happened to be near the end of the season. If he works his ass off this offseason, he could be a HUGE piece to the puzzle, not that he isn’t already. As far as I’m concerned, Landry Fields is the starting shooting guard for the Knicks, unless somebody earns that spot during training camp.

by CJGreffrath on Jun 25, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

landry's probably a much better fit...

defending the 3’s as well. he’s a solid, smart defender but might not have the laterals to stay with most 2’s.

and moving him to 6th man puts him on the court when melo is not, which is a good thing. landry requires more ball movement, and melo isn’t quite there yet.

i agree shumpty and landry should battle it out, but rotation wise, i hope shumpty shows enough IQ to start. the team will be better off if he does.

Kenyon Martin
JR Smith
Michael Redd
CJ Miles
Grant Hill

Ryan Hollins
Kurt Thomas

if we can afford him
Jamal Crawford, although I’d rather sign two of the above than just Jamal

set aside $1m for
Shawne Williams (we don’t have his Bird rights)

re-sign
Shelden Williams
Anthony Carter

nice knowing you
Roger Mason

Andy Rautins

Can’t blame you, I’m just surprised. I love a good discount, if the next CBA lets us stach him in the d-league then that’s what we should do.

by superturboultra on Jun 26, 2011 9:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

He’s a D-League talent. There are at least 100 better SGs who we can sign for minimum contracts.

Agreed with pretty much all of this

CJ Miles is an up and comer and would fit here really nicely. And I’m glad to see someone else say resign She-Will. H’es nice insurance should somebody big go down

by WSD on Jun 29, 2011 1:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I bet that JR, Crawford, Reggie Wiliams each get around 6 mil

And Redd is done. You might as well give Houston another tryout. Or Rautins.

I see no need for Anthony Carter if Shumpert is around. They’re pretty similar except Shumpert should rebound better.

Pick one between Shawne and Brown.

Go after another big guy and point guard. There probably won’t be any available. Maybe try for Wilson Chandler.

On teams like the Knicks, you need rugged guys who do the little things and can also hit an open shot, but nothing else.

So sign Brian Cardinal to a min. deal. You probably shouldn’t give out long deals. We want to get Gallinari back in 2012, right?

i would

resign ExtraE & JJ
Sign KT
Do whatever possible to get Chandler back

Someone will prob have to go for chandler (I would honestly be willing to trade both Toney and Landry to get Chandler back… throw in Balkman maybe? If chandler signs an offer with us, they may not wanna match and be willing to take a Sign and Trade)

guards: Burps, Sherbert, IllWill, Walker
Fowards: Melo, STAT, ExtraE,
Big Guys: KT, Jorts, Safari, JJ & JJ

Guys like Rautins and Brown can fill out bench. Someone else I guess… PEjr?

of course… the CBA will make this all moot.

looking at this

it would be way better to trade Landry and Walker for Chandler… not thinking it will be enough though.

that wouldnt be enough money wise

Its possibleDenver may want Fields more than Chandler; but does that really make the Knicks better? Can Chandler actually be a legit SG? I am leaning towards no and playing Melo out of position would just be foolish

i def think wil can take a duece

plus, he can move anywhere from 2-5 (5 is a stretch, but he and STAT played well together last year… one is a 4 one is a 5).

I just think he is a special player and a great guy to have off the bench. A much better 6 man then fields. It would prob require an additional pg on the roster (bringing AC back>)

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

by gbaked on Jun 27, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I think we were easy to include Chandler in the deal because we knew he'd want a lot of $ to re-sign.

Where as, even if Landry is much worse (at the time he wasn’t), he’s loads cheaper. Granted, Chandler’s value did go down after his pretty poor stint in Denver… he’s still gonna command at least a MLE type contract.

Not worth giving up cap space, even as cool as it would be getting him back. Mainly because we can’t sign him outright (Denver would match) and it would take probably Fields and Turiaf (for financial reasons) to get him in a sign and trade.

by gbaked on Jun 28, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Splitting the MLE is pretty pointless. Might as well just give players the minimum or BAE. Maybe between two guys... but no way with three.

Right now we have like 7 guys who can play and are legit: Melo, Stoudemire, Billups, Landry, Shumpert (most likely), Douglas and Turiaf. Definitely re-sign Shawne. That makes it 8. Ideally we’d add another big man, bring over Jerome Jordan, and get another wing (preferably a shooter). Assuming there’s some form of the MLE, my favorite realistic big would be Kenyon Martin. I know he isn’t a center, but he’s the same size as Amar’e and Turiaf so it wouldn’t be horrible to see him play some minutes there. I think it takes the full MLE for one year (maybe a team option for a second year). Jeff Foster, Nazr Mohammad, Joel Pryzbilla and Kwame Brown are all options for back up center too. So is re-signing Shelden. The ideal wing would be Grant Hill for the minimum but either Micheal Redd, Anthony Parker or Tracy McGrady for the minimum would be good too. It would be nice to have a shooter at starting SG allowing Landry to play more of his natural SF position.

I also think it would be wise to look into trading Douglas. I like him a lot but we really don’t need him right now. His shooting is awesome, but way too inconsistent and he got wrecked by Rondo in the playoffs (I know he was injured, but still). By drafting Shumpert we pretty much have our back up PG and SG. Having a guard rotation of Billups/ Fields/ Shumpert/ Veteran (Redd or Hill or McGrady or Parker) would be good. We need to look into trading Douglas for a bigger wing or big man. Three names that I’d like: Jason Thompson, Omri Casspi or Robin Lopez. Any one of them would be an awesome addition. But I’m worried we can’t get much for Douglas because it was rumored we were shopping him before the draft and we still came up with nothing.

IMO, it would be awesome to start the year with this rotation:

PG: Billups/ Shumpert/ Carter or any FA
SG: Landry/ Redd/ Shumpert
SF: Carmelo/ Casspi/ Shawne
PF: Amar’e/ Kenyon/ Shawne
C: Turiaf/ Jordan/ Kenyon/ Harrellson

Great balance. Shooters with Billups, Redd, Casspi, Shawne, and Melo. Defenders in Turiaf, Shumpert, and Kenyon (possibly Jordan, Landry and Harrellson). Enough youth to keep the pace up and maintain assets but at the same time, enough veteran guys for crunch time and experience.

by hvino on Jun 25, 2011 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

True, plus you would trade Douglas for what exactly

Douglas has skills but is an undersized SG learning & playing backup PG. what value does that bring?

You could trade Douglas for another small of comparable skill (what’s the point there)
or
You try to trade Douglas for a big of little to know skill or value (you’ve just thrown away one of your few players who can play for another player who cannot play)

Rule of the jungle, you cannot trade a skilled small and get a big of comparable skill or value. You can trade an all star small and in return you will get a durable and maybe borderline allstar big; but you’re not getting an big of equal value

Otherwise GSW would’ve traded Ellis long ago

You do make a good point, but you missed one major point.

The biggest reason why we haven’t seen Ellis (and Iguodala) traded is because he has a huge contract. That is the complete opposite with Tony Douglas, sure he isn’t as good as Ellis or Iggy, but he’s also much, much cheaper. He makes under $2 million but is still very young and capable of playing 20-30 minutes for a team that needs a guard. So yes, most teams don’t trade big for small, but we could still get a good player for TD because he’s a young rotation player who makes close to the minimum.

by hvino on Jun 26, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

TD because he’s a young rotation player who makes close to the minimum.

Which is every reason that we must keep him here, cuz we don’t have many of them.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Jun 26, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but in our current situation we currently have a need for other rotation players.

We now have somebody who can most likely come in and take all of Douglas’ minutes. But we still lack some other bench players. Adding somebody like Casspi or preferably, but unlikely a big like Thompson/R. Lopez would greatly help our rotation.

by hvino on Jun 26, 2011 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

We need scoring off the bench

I’m not ready to say that Shumpert is anything more then a slasher and defensive guy at this point.

Toney fills a need, perimeter shooting off the bench. Sure he’s streaky, but he’s also going to be a third year player. He’s improved his shooting every year he’s been here and I’ll say he should again.

You trade him, you create another hole. I’d rather not take from one thin area to patch up another.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Jun 26, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

And Toney hasn’t just been able to score, he’s taken over a few games and put the team on his back.

I’m excited to see what Toney does going into his 3rd season, with a little more stability, and getting freed up for open shots with (sometimes) two stars on the court with him.

You just made my point for me. They are overpriced smalls and nobody wants to give fair value for smalls

A ccomparably skilled big with a comparable contract will be desired and traded for because they are bigs.

It is too bad and unfair but that has always been the reality in the NBA.

For example

I do recognize Bosh’s skill but what is the real reason why he got LeBron money?

except for kenyon (would rather kurt or even mcroberts or earl clark). i just think he’s done. trading TD does make sense and i think teams like washington and sacramento would be great options. sure shumpty isn’t a sure thing, but he seems like at the very least, he’ll be a strong defender and open court player. TD just doesn’t do enough to not convert him into something more helpful. sac and wash could use a defensive guard who can hit 3’s. casspi would be a great addition as would jason thompson (or any of the washington bigs… booker, seraphin especially).

Yes, KMart really is shorter

I frankly don’t think he’s even taller than Melo; and Melo is a lot closer to 6’6" than he is to the advertised 6’8"

Even if he was as short…. errrr I mean as tall, as Turiaf… is that really a good thing.

Plus Turiaf has made a career out of being a NBA Center (good or bad); KMart didn’t and hadn’t played Center, And putting together two players who can only play a half season doesn’t make one full player. All that happens is you have two players injured at the same time

Obviously it's not a good situation, but you can't argue that it isn't better than what we currently have.

If Turiaf, Joel Anthony and Hayes can play center in this league, so can Kenyon. Think about it, there really aren’t many teams that have good centers, so it really wouldn’t be too much of a problem.

But, don’t act like I said start Kenyon at center or play Kenyon at center for 30 mpg, not even 20 mpg. I’m saying maybe 10 mpg and against some teams keep him at PF. I had him as pretty much the 2nd string PF and 3rd string C. Pretty much how we played Jefferies most the time. But Kenyon is at least 100 times better.

by hvino on Jun 26, 2011 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

No I do not want KMart at any price. I would not spend on a player who will miss 1 out of every 4 games

Like he has done every year for the last 7. Especially since Turiaf suffers from the same curse.

Plus KMart has never shown the maturity that he could handle being a bench player.

Hell just last year KMart, still on one of the worst contracts in NBA history was whining to the press that the money given to Harrington should have gone to him.

Chuck Hayes!

Perfect fit for this team. Rugged post D would compliment Amare’s weakside shot blocking well. Plus he can hit a shot (he isn’t a one dimensional guy), and can rebound really well (about 10 per 36 minutes). Also, Houston should let him go because they drafted yet another tweener forward and have Patrick Patterson waiting on the bench (lastly they got a pf/c in Donatas Motiejunas in their draft-night trade). They have no need to pay Hayes.

Billups/ PG billups wants to mentor or have a drink with (veteran)
Fields (should play the 3)/ TD/ Shump

Amare/ Hopefuly Chuck Hayes
Turiaf/ Jorts/ Jared/ Jordan

15th slot for rautins or ewing jr. or another min waged vet?

other than the center position (tho chuck can play the 5 dependin on matchups), i like this team. I just hope theres money for a back up pg and chuck and another decent big. i doubt all three, but hopefully at least two. jus gotta wait and see what the cba is gana be like. hopefully theres some perks in it that can allow us to offer more money. i would ffer the most money to chuck or the decent big. i dont really wanna lose anyone except at the center position, 15th slot, and bully.

imagine td and shump lockin down the industry of nba guards. im prayin for a breakout season for TD. If he DWTDD, on a consistent basis, then hopefully it may not be long before Shump follows. THEN hopefully the two can spread the defense virus to their teammates.

Isn't Kurt Thomas about 65yrs old now?

You’re not going to be able to sign Crawford for a portion of the MLE.

Also, depending on how accurate the story is that NY will only offer 1yr FA deals so they don’t tie up 2012 FA money, the team will be greatly impacted by just who would even be interested.

And according to Walsh’s comments, aren’t they planning to run Iman from the point. So the long term intent would be a PG//SG combo of Iman/Fields together

if you got that from the Post, it sucks

but that’s probably correct. Even if the Knicks wanted to say “fuck it” and not wait for the chance to sign CP3 or Dwight, there’s really not much this FA class has to offer.

Also we don’t have much of a choice, the Knicks are pretty much capped out

I agree, the source is crap, but that doesn't make the story any less likely

Due to a combination of the 2012 FA, the lockout, Walsh leaving and D’Antoni’s “will he or won’t he” status, it does make sense to not commit to anything long term next year

But the downside is you burn one more year of Amare’s & Melo’s NBA career, you waste a year because most of your rotation can’t stay healthy. And to me the biggest concern is you put Amare in harms way for another year. Melo gets beat up but he’s durable; Amare though is a ticking time bomb with that knee. You just can’t waste any time

I'm not worried about that downside

Amar’e and Melo are still young. Amar’e’s knee would be more of a time bomb if he didn’t have Carmelo and Burps to shoulder the load here. I think he was getting fresher by the game when Carmelo/Burps got here cuz he didn’t feel he had to do everything (tho that probably more had to do with justifying his contract and not the talent of the team surrounding him).

A whole year with Burps and possibly finishing his career with Melo as the sidekick, that knee is gonna be fine. Amar’e is extremely tough and durable as well and the burden, at least what he’ll feel that it is, will be a lot less.

You all aren't really referring to Billups as Burps are you

Billups has earned the respect he should receive

The man is Mr Big Shot. When you step up and do it in the NBA Finals you deserve to be represented.

And according to Walsh’s comments, aren’t they planning to run Iman from the point. So the long term intent would be a PG//SG combo of Iman/Fields together

Paul/Iman long-term, probably

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

Iman has to prove he's a player, but i like your thinking

With Melo though it is still 5 to 1

Melo shoulders the scoring burden with Amare, but now the cupboard is bare and no one to take Center minutes from Amare. That abuse is where I see Amare wearing out

There are so many assumptions about Big Shot bouncing back; but as a first hand observer for years I’m not convinced

Big Shot has worn out during the playoffs for the last several years due to putting in too much during the regular season. Diva Coach Karl & the Nuggets completely wasted Big Shot by burning him up during the regular season. Last summer he played in the intl tourney and it’s possible that’s the real reason why he was worn out and injured for most of last year.

But it’s also quite possible Big Shot’s tank is just about empty.

Good to know that we supposedly won't offer any multi-year deals.

I think it would be a major error to add Sam Dalembert to a long contract. Adding someone like Kwame, would be much smarter.

Btw, anyone else realize that if there is no more MLE than we could end up adding multiple MLE type talents for cheap. IF there is no MLE, that means players start choosing teams for the actual team instead of money. That leaves them with the option to either re-sign w their current team, go to a team w cap space (only so many and most aren’t good) or sign for cheap w the team of their choice. That would put us in one of the most favorable situations in the whole NBA. Maybe only Miami in a better spot, but some FAs would choose NY over Miami. Also NY’s market would allow them to get more money from endorsements to compensate for their lower salary.

Also, another thing that could greatly help us in some way is an amnesty clause. Sure, we’d be kind of screwed over cuz we really have no one to use it on and probably waste it on Balkman…. BUT that rule would make many good but overpaid players FAs. I’m talking guys like Biedrins, Rip Hamilton, Artest, Arenas, Lewis, Davis, Roy, Bargnani or Calderon, Gooden, maybe Garcia or Salmons, possibly Joe Johnson or Marvin Williams, Haywood, Thabeet and Richard Jefferson. That list is just pure awesome, especially when you consider that each player would be getting a lot of money from their old contracts (amnesty still makes the owners pay the players, just remove them from the books) so they’d almost all take discounts (and if there’s also no MLE, it’s even better for us). But wow, just look at that list. Imagine adding Biedrins or Haywood along with Rip or Roy. That changes our outlook completely.

idk bout the sg and c position starters you named

shumpert and fields will prolly battle for the spot if theres a season that is but center i would rather have hollins in this case start and harrelson get no more then 20 mins. hollins is a proven player , harrelson was the 45th pick this year i dont think hes capable and a good fit as a starting center especially on an uptempo team

i could live with hollins and harrellson...

2 different kinds of centers, both young who would play their roles with room to grow. turiaf could be good insurance and a good father-figure.

Turiaf is a year older than Hollins

but shit, at this point why quibble

Congrats on winning your first NBA championship, Peja Stojakovic!

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

I could care less about Curry, so no

Wow

Don’t kill me but I think we could have used Curry in the playoffs. I hope the Heat sign him, 11 years in the NBA without a single minute of playoff action is a long time, someone’s gotta pop that cherry.
