The New York Knicks have agreedto partner with the NBA Development League's Erie BayHawks and will buy the team's basketball operations according to a source with knowledge of the agreement. An official announcement is expected soon.
The Knicks will control the basketball operations of the team including hiring of the coaches as well as handling all player personnel matters while the BayHawks continue to focus on the business side of basketball of the team Erie, Pa.
The Knicks are third team to enter into this sort of D-League affiliation as the Houston Rockets have partnered with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for two seasons while the New Jersey Nets entered into a similar agreement with the Springfield Armor this offseason.
Ridiculous Upside first mentioned rumblings of this agreement on May 5 and then again on Monday while noting the Knicks would ultimately like to eventually move a D-League team to Harlem.

I've been wondering about this
ever since the Nets took over the Armor. I’m glad, I’d like to see the DL become more like a minor league (only without draft picks going straight there like in MLB, it makes their draft so pointless).

It doesn't make the draft pointless
As in the MLB, people who are ready to play will play. It would definitely help the NBA if young guys who aren’t ready to contribute spent more time in college or the D-League instead of sucking in the NBA.
Remember when rookies were actually ready to play? Like Shaq coming in and getting 23-14 with 3.5 blocks? At age 20. After 3 years of college.
funny the difference between 21 and 19
when it comes to athletes

Yes
I have no problem with dismantling the ridiculous NCAA money-making machine. I think it’s so ridiculous that young men and women are generating income for their schools and are getting little value back.
Now, for 2nd tier athletes who are going to finish school and go out into the non-NBA world, yes by all means go to college and work that degree. But for the top-tier talent who can make money right away while getting brought up in the D-League, why not?

EXCELLENT!
thought we should have done this for years now. I’m glad to see we’re taking advantage of all resources needed to dip into the talent pool.
