Woodson to Interview for Def. Assistant Coach

link: http://www.insidehoops.com/blog/?p=8103

Part that matters:

For his part, Woodson has moved on, interviewing for the Minnesota Timberwolves’ vacancy. And a source indicates he’ll be in New York early this week to talk with the Knicks about becoming their defensive coordinator, a job that management has mandated coach Mike D’Antoni, entering the final year of his contract, accept for next season.

Star-divide

I like the idea. Woodson is probably the biggest name/ most well-known guy left, whether that means he's the best is different though. I think he should be able to succeed in the "Thibs/Frank" role because he's a smart guy, but has troubles when it comes to offense, that's why he makes to be a good assistant. I'm just glad to here that we're definitely hiring a defensive assistant and Woodson would be a guy to demand some respect from D'Antoni and the players. The way I see it, Woodson is like a worse version of Mike Brown and a little worse than Lawrence Frank. Not bad though.

i like woodson

dunno if he’s specifically a great defensive coach or anything tho. the hawks never struck me as any defensive juggernaut, they just have the right personnel. but what do i know?

+1

the problem was smith was a 3 and played the 4 and horford was a 4 and played at the 5 i think he was good with undersized talent which seems to be our problem….so i think he is the right choice.

Woodson will do the job.

He is good at figuring out how to use his guys. The hawks were terrible on defense when he took over there, and he got them to respectable. Which means he did a lot of work on defense.

but it took 4 years

not disagreeing. just saying.

Do consider though

That he was working with a knucklehead in Josh Smith, two young guys like Horford and Marvin Williams (who actually is a decent defender), and then shitty defenders like Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford for a year.

It did take awhile, but it was sort of an odd cast, and some different type of guys to get to function as an overall good defensive team

oh god

mike bibby AND jamal crawford. what a mess it must have been for the front line. and yea josh smith is a total dunce, but mostly on offense.

Hit reply by accident

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not? But if you are, Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford probably make up one of the worst defensive backcourts imaginable

by WSD on Aug 4, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

i am not being sarcastic? i'm confused now tho

mike bibby and jamal crawford are some of the worst defenders i have ever seen at the nba level. BY FAR! i’m just imagining woodson teaching josh smith and al horford how to guard the post and the basket while the rest of the team does layup lines.

Oh okay

When you said “oh god, mike bibby AND jamal crawford. what a mess…..” I thought you were being sarcastic. But I think we’re on the same page.

I don’t think Woodson is a defensive mastermind by any means, but I do think he’s probably good at making adjustments and teaching players how to cover for other lesser defenders, which he’d certainly have to do here

true indeed

I am more concerned with the following

1. Woodson is a close personal friend of Isiah Thomas.
2. Likewise he is also a friend of Glen Grunwald
3. He considers himself a disciple of the “Demon Coach,” Larry Brown and consider Brown both a friend and a mentor.
4. Woodson does not make any secret about his desire to be a head coach in the league again sooner rather than later.
5. When he was an assistant for Brown with the Pistons he and Chauncey Billups developed a close relationship.
6. Last but not least he is a former Knick.

So the interest in this guy by D’Antoni is intriguing to say the least. Woodson because of his personal connections would seem like the last guy D’Antoni should want anywhere near him in a contract year. So I am interested in how this would work out if Woodson does come on board.

by Robert Curre on Aug 4, 2011 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I did not know any of those things.

Before I was just kind of lukewarm to him because of how lukewarm his team’s success had been in the past and I’d never really heard of a defensive wiz rep from this guy. Now, well nothing’s really changed, but I wish he had no connections at all to IT and Demon Coach.

7.

His unimaginative, all-iso-all-the-time offense with the Hawks would suit a certain high-scoring wing of ours just fine…

by flossy on Aug 4, 2011 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that it would matter so much as a D assistant

But in the event that he ends up Judas-ing Pringles…

by flossy on Aug 4, 2011 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

yes, thats why i like him

he’s not self-centered. and willing to put himself out there. that’s rare at that level. constantly in the press like that. respect.

Woodson looks a little like Ray Felton

Which increases the odds that Ray-Ray will shave his eyebrows at some point, for those betting types.

Good Move

Wow!
Bring in M.Brown.
Maybe we should just root for no 2011 season.
This way we can get rid of the whole D’Antoni staff and start fresh next year 2012 season.

Just ask the question.
Below wouldn’t we be better with this coaching staff.
Head Coach C.Laettner
Asst. Coach M.Brown/Asst. M.Cheeks/Asst.A.Dantley/Asst. K.Tripuka/Asst. B.McAdoo

C.Laettner was a great college player and natural leader on the court.
His natural leadership is alone a standard needed to be a successful NBA Coach.
Might also point out the guy knows the game inside and out.

The rest of the staff are former players whom also qualify based on playing talent and knowledge of the game as winners.

So let’s root for no 2011 season.
This way we can get rid of the D’Antoni staff with their big contracts.
Not just putting a bandaid on it by bringing in M.Brown as a savior for our defense.

Mike Brown's the Lakers coach you idiot

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

I wonder where Dz comes up with this stuff.

Like how do you twirl Laettner and Tripucka out of thin air and viable coaching candidates? If I wanted Natural Leadership I’d go apprentice under Mark Jackson.

Whatever

Just another reason to not want him.

I love the Knicks twice as much as you so piss off.

Are you Laettner's agent Dizzy?

Because there is nothing that suggests that Laettner would even be a good college coach let alone NBA coach. Laettner is looking for a coaching gig, because he is broke, because he was found to be guilty of Fraud and was order to pay back millions of dollars he stole from other athletes. Do you really want that guy coaching the Knicks.

Also if the guy knows the game inside and out as you say, why was he such a failure as a NBA player? This guy was a worse player than Bargnani is today, yet I bet you wouldn’t want Barg’s to coach. Here is the kicker Dizz, Coach K at Duke wants no part of the guy who was arguably his best player. Every former Dukie who has even remotely thought they might want to coach, has been welcomed on Coach K’s bench, except one, that’s right the guy you want to coach the Knicks!

But this is precisely the skill he needs
he was found to be guilty of Fraud and was order to pay back millions of dollars he stole from other athletes. Do you really want that guy coaching the Knicks.

Anyone who can convince these athletes to give him their money can also convince them that they are winners.

I love the Knicks twice as much as you so piss off.

by dzeidzik on Aug 6, 2011 3:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about that stuff
he is broke, because he was found to be guilty of Fraud and was order to pay back millions of dollars he stole from other athletes

I searched around for something about this and found nothing. Are you sure?
Also, while Laettner had a very uninspiring pro career he was on the dream team and won back to back NCAA championships, and many people consider him in the discussion for best college player of all time. So it’s not like he doesn’t have some creds. My only memories of him are as an irritating whiney assed dirty player, and would not want him as our coach for those reasons alone. Otherwise he is a perfectly valid coaching candidate unless of course he is a crook, as you say he is.

Here's the first link I found in a literal 5-second Google search:

http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/05/shawne-merriman-wins-lawsuit-against-christian-laettner/

The gist of it is Laettner started a company and got a lot of athletes to invest. It sank for various reasons and he tried to weasel out of his obligations because he’s a weasel. He’s an arrogant and cocky dude with little justification for either. I don’t even follow college basketball and I don’t like him.

But my bad. His natural leadership is alone a standard needed to be a successful NBA Coach.
