So it seems like there's going to be this amnesty clause where the owners can get rid of one bad contract.
Here at P&T, we've briefly discussed who we should use the clause on (most folks are leaning towards Balkman).
But Dan L. from the Knicks Fan Blog really caught my attention this morning with a list of players who are most likely to be axed by their teams. Check it out.
Two names jumped off the page...
Emeka Okafur
&
Desagana Diop
Okafur would be perfect for us. He would allow Amare to stay at the power forward, and he would provide the rebounding and defense that we need. The only reason he's been considered an undesirable player is because of his awful contract. But if the awful contract is gone... Hello Beautiful!
Okafur is a teammate of Chris Paul's. He might know whether Paul is staying in New Orleans or not already. Maybe Okafur wants to be in NY to welcome his old point guard when he arrives?
Desagana Diop is what most folks would call a joke. But once again, the punchline is his contract. He's not as good as Okafur, but he does play above average interior defense, and he rebounds at a passable rate. If he could be signed on the cheap, he would be a lot better than the guy we have a center right now... what's his name... oh yeah, we don't have a center.
Diop does come with a warning label, however. He's coming off surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon. Some guys have come back from that okay, and some guys have not been the same. As of now, Diop is unproven.
If the price is right, I say axe Balkman and go after one of these two players (preferably Okafur) with aggression. Try to sell them on the chance of winning a championship.
What say you?
