Postgame Thread: Knicks 85, Sixers 79

Well, the Knicks did a great job of bending but not breaking, beating the red-hot Philadelphs at Madison Square Garden in spite of an outrageous rash of fourth quarter turnovers. Carmelo Anthony had himself a statistical night, Jorts Harrellson provided some unexpected offense in the first half and stalwart defense throughout, and the Knicks escaped a pretty stressful second half with all 120 stars to free Princess Peach.

I'll have a recap up later tonight for sure. In the meantime? Discuss!

The endings of the last few games have been maddeningly frustrating

but I like this pattern of almost blowing games much more than the old pattern of completely blowing games.

Truth

It’s annoying, especially considering we keep getting to the edge of completely blowing a team out and then letting them back in.

But the more important fact is that we don’t let them win. And we’re doing it with a team that will clearly get better as the season goes on. A lot of the problems that exist seem like ones that will be cured by more time playing together and having a legit PG in at all times.

as always, a lot to improve upon

but giving up less than 80 points is always a good thing as a Knicks fan, and at least for now I think the important thing is picking up wins

by the landriest on Jan 11, 2012 10:13 PM EST reply actions

My god, so little ball movement...

They had Melo bring the ball down as the point forward at least 20 times and it worked out terribly.
I think I saw one PnR and it was accidental. So little consistency for this team.

But, hey at least they sorta played some defense.

Like every other game....

It starts out good in the first quarter and steadily deteriorates from there until its Melo ball in the 4th.

The difference was Jorts

3-5 from three point range. Ugly win but of course we’ll take it. We’ve got to figure out something else at the end of the games. We have been extraordinarily lucky to squeeze these last few games out.

You can claim it’s all luck, but I can claim we’ve been unlucky because our shots haven’t hit.

Yeah

We’ve been REALLY bad at hitting open jumpers this year. We are DEAD LAST in the league at FG% from 10-15 feet at 22.4%. There’s simply no way that that keeps up. (We’re 21st from 16-23 feet and 22nd in 3P%.)

by Joamiq on Jan 12, 2012 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

What I meant by lucky

Is that we have once again gotten away with forcing the ball to Melo at the end of the game instead of playing team basketball. It worked, more or less and I am as happy as anyone else about this. But a steady diet of this type of approach will backfire in the long run.

New signature coming soon.

Fair Enough

But I think if we hit more shots we would have put the Bobcats and the Sixers away earlier and 4th quarter would have been garbage time

Give Philly credit

Every time they doubled Melo, they rotated very quickly when he passed out of it, save for the Jorts 3 at the end of the third. But considering Melo had one of the best wing defenders in the game on him, we could’ve just dumped it to Amar’e more.

We got lucky the Sixers stopped hitting free throws, this iso shit will be the death of us

again if the man calls for an Iso you are limited in where you can move.

The best you can do is move when Melo starts his move and maybe serve as a bail out if he gets hung in the air. But really all of this why don’t they move when Melo Isos has to stop. They don’t move because they can’t. The only way to fix it, is to have Melo go to the Iso if he has to later in the clock. But really folks he was calling for Isos with like 18 seconds left on the shot clock and that is not gonna work unless he is hot.

by Robert Curre on Jan 12, 2012 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Tangential

How can Rubio be considered a rookie? He’s had at least 2 years of professional basketball experience (excluding the semi-pro team he played for ages 15-19). He’s not a rookie.

by erniesto on Jan 12, 2012 1:09 AM EST up reply actions

correction

Rubio has been pro for 6 years in Spain. Players like Walker, Shumpert and Brooks have no professional experience. The press needs to realize that this isn’t a Blake Griffen situation and that Rubio has years of experience.

by erniesto on Jan 12, 2012 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

this is a pointless debate unless ur exhorting the nba to disqualify rubio from ROY consideration..

otherwise he is a incredibly talented point guard and he will be knick in 5 years, with melo and shump going on a recruiting trip to minneapolis

by bababooey2 on Jan 12, 2012 1:23 AM EST up reply actions

Haha

Actually. I am. I think anyone with that much professional experience (mainly playing on the best basketball team in Spain) should be disqualified. It’s not like the ACB is a scrubs league.

But yeah, with that infinite cap space rule hidden deep in the CBA the Knicks will certainly get Rubio after losing out on the Irving/Walker sweepstakes (who will be better point guards at that point).

by erniesto on Jan 12, 2012 1:30 AM EST up reply actions

agreed, but they really mean NBA rookie

doesnt really bother me.

baseball is like that, you get drafted, then make it to the pros years later.

we are all harping for a real D-Leauge that works like a minor leagues. if that happens, they you will get guys from different draft classes as rookies often.

there is nothing like playing in the pros, in any sport. your first year there, you are a rook.

One thing i took from this game

Jorts always seems to redeem his mistakes, whether he recovers the ball immediately by hustle and reflex, or just makes up for it later. but it’s usually sooner rather than later

just returned from the garden...

and here are my observations.

1. when things get tight, we grab our wubby (melo) and hold on for dear life.
2. we have no, and this includes melo, real ball handlers.
3. our defense actually looked solid (though this being the sixers 3rd game in a row helped)
4. amare could possibly be the worst defender in the nba
5. jorts rules… and saved our asses in a huge way.
6. MDA does in fact express his profound frustrations… nice to see.
7. our depth is shit… except for jorts.
8. TD needs a change of scenery, and i mean this with no disrespect… NY swag is gone.
9. shump is young… but is still our shumpest player.
10. amare needs to buy tyson dinner on a regular basis for bailing him out all the time.
11. tyson is long

by erniesto on Jan 12, 2012 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

You guys love trading players when they struggle instead of letting the guys ride it out.

We are starting to find a lot like a bunch of front runners. Dear Shumpert play close attention if you have a slump you will have Knicks fans wanted you shipped out. Look sometimes guys just don’t play well for whatever reason. And What frustrates me is that sooner or later TD is gonna break out of it, he proved over his first two seasons that he is a much better shooter than he is now. And the first time TD drops 6 3’s in a game this year you guys will be all on his dick! Same with Landry one 19 and 10 rebound game and you guys will be talking about how Landry is sooo Landry! Either these guys are bums or they not. The hopping on and off guys dicks is my problem. It wasn’t that long ago that we were all DWTDD. Well what Toney Douglas do right now is struggle. it happens. But he is the same guy you folks used to jock.

I really like stat

and think his O is gonna explode when BD comes in… (seriously, its gonna be like we are getting 2 new players).

but yeah, his D is awful. many, many times, he just moves out the way.

I dont think its time to trade TD. He is with us for this season, and may come in handy (lots of games left to play).

but I do think a change of scenery can help him too… so if someone is willing to trade a 1st round pick for him, I would be down. I would just hope that it is a good team. I wouldnt want to see Toney banished to a crap team (although, a crap team wouldnt give up its 1st for him, so the odds of that are slim).

"It's obvious"

There are lots of possible reasons why TD might be struggling. He and the Knicks have only played 10 games. Even if you’re going to trade him let’s give him some time to rebound and maybe his trade value will go up, can’t be too good now. I think he’ll be DWTDD soon enough

Oh damn.

I’ve only seen like 3 episodes of that show, but have loved them. Really need to get on starting it from the beginning.

Also you should really watch the show

this is probably my favorite moment, but there’s so many good ones.

I was at the game, and being able to watch whatever I wanted instead of what TV shows me really helped.

As you all know, the fourth quarter was dreadful. Melo ISOs abound. Shump tried to do too much, but he’s a rookie, so I can’t be too mad at him. Also, Amar’e set a few picks for Melo and rolled straight to the basket but Melo didn’t see him. That really has to change.

I know the offense was bad with Melo and Shump on the floor in the fourth quarter, but my God, when both Melo and Shump are on the bench it’s like no one even knows how to play basketball. TD had no clue what was going on, ever, and no one could find STAT unless he was at the top of the key, which led to him driving into the teeth of the defense and fucking up in some way. I think, for now at least, either Shump or Melo needs to be on the floor at all times.

after that Tony Battie dunk

I thought “he’s still in the league?”
I coulda sworn he’s been gone for a few years.

Hey Everybody! Guess What!

We have a winning record and the Celtics have a losing record! We’re a game and a half ahead of the Celtics!

Let that sink in, just enjoy it.

We won ugly tonight, but we’re Knicks fans: in the 90s we won ugly and in the 00s we didn’t win at all. I’ll take winning ugly thank you very much. Also we won with defense! Hooray!

Oh and we’re a game and a half ahead of the Celtics! It just feels good to say. Buck Foston.

Oh, also should mention that most of the problems I saw can be fixed by more time playing together and BDizzle being present

There were problems, but a damn solid win, good D, and we’re getting better.

Getting blown out by the Bobcats at home was unacceptable. Winning, even though we make it harder than it needs to be, totally acceptable right now. WE CAN BUILD ON THIS.

Also, at some point I have to believe that either Landry Fields or Toney Douglas will be able to hit more than 20% of their shots. We don’t even need both of them to. Just one and we’re that much more dangerous.

Love seeing back to back defensive wins. This is how you win in the playoffs. It's one thing against Charlotte, it's another against Philly.

Sure neither are offensive juggernauts, but Philly is a good team that will be in the playoffs and we got a solid win.

forgot to add:

These are the kinda wins that help bring a team together. Sounds cliche, but I’m loving this group of players right now. Can’t wait for Boom Dizzle to come back and join the crew on the court.

The negatives in this game will be shored up

I am very satisfied with how it turned out all things considered. Still sloppy play as evidenced by the turnovers but the Knicks show steady improvement game to game. Defense was very impressive.

This game is glorious

If you hate the heat, this is just so pleasureable

If the Knicks are going to get supermicroanalyzed after every loss or sloppy win I wonder if sportswriters are going to be just as fair and balanced with tonite's Heat loss..

I did not see a unanimous favorite to win the championship….saw alot of old Lebron, overmatched Heat paint defense, no 3pt shooting outside of Chalmers, and no paint offense.

But don't you know? Their stars are better than ours and so are their role players.

Also they play defense and we don’t.

I mean all I do is watch ESPN and read Isola so I could be wrong

its so amazing

how gloriously his play is mirroring his choosing the heat.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

by gbaked on Jan 12, 2012 11:12 AM EST up reply actions

just curious

what do you use to determine that?

was trying to find some defensive rankings somewhere, but cant really find anything other then points allowed, and none of it lists the knicks in the top 10…

We may struggle in the 4th, but we win

Fuck LeBron! hahahaahaha. It’s still so much fun to say.

NYK>MIA

It's truly amazing how bad they are down the stretch

Honestly, no one can stop them if they don’t play like idiots, but they beat themselves time and time again. No team losing to them in the 4th should ever be without confidence
