Game Thread: Knicks at Thunder- 1/14/12

New York Knicks at Oklahoma City Thunder, Jan 14, 2012 8:00 PM EST

Hey swampbunnies! I'm future-posting this before I get on a plane home (I aspire to be back in time for tip-off). The Knicks and Thunder play at 8. Jared Jeffries will suit up. Carmelo Anthony will not, and Bill Walker will start in his stead.

Welcome to Loud City is the Thunder blog to check out. Comment here, and remember not to post .gifs, photos, illegal streams, and links to Pat Sajak dress-up games in the thread.

Should be a weird one.

Should be...interesting

I’ll keep an eye on this one, but tonight is Tebow Time after all

If we do pull out a great win I don’t want to hear that we’re better off without Melo. He’s flat out the best player on this team.

Hm

Though I am generally a Landryfan, this doesn’t seem like a terrible idea. Steadier hand next to Shump, can play off the ball and shoot 3s when Shump is playmaking, gives Landry freer reign to make an impact off the bench. Defensive downgrade, even if you don’t think much of Landry’s defense, though maybe Shump’s D lets you get away with that. We shall see.

Not trying to overreact but

amare for dwight is looking pretty good now. We could use the bigs like the clippers do with theirs. Both are still effective but posses little to no range whats so eve,

by eomede07 on Jan 14, 2012 9:15 PM EST reply actions

It could probably be similar to the blake and jordan situation.

If not trade Tyson for a good pg.
Amare, jordan, fields, and douglas for dwight and anderson and second round pick
Trade tyson for monta ellis or a pg.

by eomede07 on Jan 14, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

We then trade Chandler for DWill

i wouldn't work at all

you obviously trade chandler with amare and take back hedo’s stupid contract. that’s why i’m against this. i would rather have carmelo/pau or luis or bargnani/chandler than carmelo/hedo’s crappiness/dwight. plus dwight and carmelo kind of get in each other’s way on offense.

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

Dwight doesn't really get in anyone's way on offense

That’s part of why he fits so well pretty much anywhere

by eomede07 on Jan 14, 2012 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

dwight and carmelo both like the low post/ low block

plus dwight is a crap passer and has absolutely no range. you can make him the hustle/ clean up guy though. but i wouldn’t want to pay him to do that. i’d rather have a four with range who can pass and chandler instead.

I don't see how it wouldn't work

No opposing player would ever get a rebound. Put em each on one side of the paint, let Melo do whatever he wants, and they’ll clean up his misses

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

I understand they're good, but giving up 70? At half?

Damn. Shows exactly how far away this team is from being real contenders.

by ultimate913 on Jan 14, 2012 9:17 PM EST reply actions

it’s just unfortunate that Stat is the kind of player who needs a pg. He is different from David West and even Bosh because they can score regardless.

by RASHADI on Jan 14, 2012 9:18 PM EST reply actions

I don't know about the second sentence

Bosh gets his unassisted points the same way Amare does – on putbacks and jumpers. Amare’s just not hitting the jumper this year (but he will)

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

thats what i mean

bosh shoots jumpers and stat is not making them anymore. I don’t know what happen. Could be just rusty from not playing ball in summer because of his back. Last season that jumper was deadly and automatic.

by RASHADI on Jan 14, 2012 9:23 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing happened really

It’s too small of a sample size and he’s shooting them too impossibly poorly. He’ll start hitting them eventually

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He’s forced a few, sure, but he’s missed a lot of wide open jumpers. Check this out:

Amare’s distance shooting stats

2010-11
3-9 feet: 45.3%
10-15 feet: 38.3%
16-23 feet: 44%

2011-2012
3-9: 25%
10-15: 23.1%
16-23: 28%

Basically, there is NO WAY that he can continue to shoot around 25% on jumpers. Even if last year was abnormally high, there’s no way some of those numbers don’t move up over the rest of the season.

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

bosh does not have much of a back to the basket game

but he is a good face up player. at this point, i would prefer him over amare, but i don’t like bosh much either. at least he makes his jumpers and has some finesse unlike stoudemire though.

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

by knickswin on Jan 14, 2012 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

i can’t stand bosh either. But I have to admit he is good in some ways.

by RASHADI on Jan 14, 2012 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

he is a better second option to put next to carmelo . ..

their games work better. but again, i don’t love bosh at all. i would rather have pau gasol every day of the week and twice on sundays. pau plays like a big man and is a very good passer unlike bosh.

Everyone looked really good except Amar’e. I guess our TO’s really skew that as well but seems like most of the team is shooting well. Not sure where I am going here other than I guess I wish our stars understood when they were off and didn’t try to do too much when the other guys are actually playing well.

by jlaw on Jan 14, 2012 9:21 PM EST reply actions

i’m not trying to say “i told you so.” maybe i was wrong about the trade. if this is the team we’re going to put out, then we shouldn’t have made the trade. this is just crap. garbage. i remember watching tmac in orlando, and this team gives off serious vibes like that. hate saying that. i would rather have the old team than this garbage. but i would rather have carmelo and trade amare for a power forward who can play with him than the old team.

bahahaha good ball movement

you can’t have good ball movement without any sort of penetration or post play. everyone can just stick to his man without someone to break down the defense. i was not expecting good ball movement this game.

There was some decent ball movement in the first half

but 1) it got nowhere because no one knew what to do with it and 2) it was sandwiched between turnovers

This is why you don't trade an entire team

for one human being with tendons, bones and ligaments

Didn't you hear?

It’s impossible to win in the NBA without multiple superstars…

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

now, i don't think the old team was winning a championship unless they got marc gasol and gallo reached his ceiling and everything that possibly could fall in place fell in place

but this team isn’t doing diddily squat either. ugly, ugly, ugly basketball. it’s not fun for me to watch. it’s just stressful. nothing fits. again, i would trade amare. i don’t like doing that and i think it makes our team seem like a circus act again, but in trading for him, the front office decided they wanted to build around carmelo. and amare does not fit.

Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate

by knickswin on Jan 14, 2012 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

it's so tough,

i used to be so ‘screw melo, this is amar’e country,’ but now i dont know. I still maintain the Melo trade as one of the worst ideas in history, as he didn’t fill holes we actually needed to fill— but now it’s almost like okay if we’re pretty much stuck with melo and amar’e isn’t contributing anymore, and he clashes with both our other stars…
then again, what could we reasonably and actually get for him?

by mp987987 on Jan 14, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

right

the trade is old news. regardless what you think about it, the best thing you can do is move forward. the smartest move is probably to move stoudemire for someone whose game complements carmelo and tyson

honestly, i have no idea what amare is worth around the league. maybe nothing. i would try to see if we could get luis scola, andrea bargnani, or maybe pau gasol. they all fit with carmelo and tyson much better. i dunno if the other teams would go for that. the only thing is, luis and pau are old which might make houston and la willing to move them. andrea is young but i think the city of toronto has had a tough relationship with him. maybe they’d be willing to move him.

at least when the old team sucked it was because they had shitty players (i mean the pre-2010 teams)

We didn’t actually play that badly in the first half aside from the TOs. Our approach wasn’t wrong. But they punished every small mistake.

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

This is ridiculous

I can deal with losing to a better team, but two nights in a row you don’t show up? that is unacceptable. I thought D’antoni’s forte was his offense, so where is it? Hope Amare steps his game up, he does’nt look good so far. This team is not good enough to get too deep into a hole and climb out of it. They better start grinding out some wins.

by mrluck35 on Jan 14, 2012 10:28 PM EST reply actions

Amare needs to be bench for a bit. He's hurting more than he's helping

poor defense is acceptable when he was shooting well. But now he his offense abilities are as bad as his defensive ones. He’s a liability.

by lololol on Jan 14, 2012 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

I respectfully but totally disagree

he’s not going to get the jumper in rhythm on the bench

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Plus One

I went on Anti-MDA rants last season, before all these offensive struggles (and before I joined P&T). So you can imagine how much I’m holding back to save the virgin ears of the D’Antoni faithful in this last stretch. Somebody please tell me where I can find signs of his merit, I’m willing to at least look at it— this is a real thing, btw… post away.
Is it just that he’s not Isiah?

by mp987987 on Jan 14, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think people would like to believe the reason the team under performs

is because of no training camp, new players, whatever excuse you want to use, so they exonerate D’antoni. The defense has been pretty good so far, now the offense sucks, last year the offense was tops in the league and the D was bad, so either way D’antoni should take a hit. Even though you had no training camps, a bad PG situation, and new players you still have to play through it.

by mrluck35 on Jan 14, 2012 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

There's the rub. The PLAYERS aren't playing thru it because they're not hitting their shots

Take away Jorts and Bibby (and TD’s body took him out) and there is nobody rising to the occassion. With no perimeter game we’re dead in the water against good teams, with or without Melo. Why cover our shooters if they can’t shoot? So they’ll clog the paint and double team

by screamedia on Jan 14, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

because they take BAD shots

which is predicated on D’antoni’s system, whoever is open take the shot. They’re just content with standing on the perimeter and jacking up garbage. D’antoni should get in guys ears more and tell them to drive more.

by mrluck35 on Jan 14, 2012 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Not having a PG

is REALLY hurting Amare’s game.

by mrluck35 on Jan 14, 2012 10:33 PM EST reply actions

I'm wondering if the shift of the team

going through Melo is affecting Amare mentally.

by mrluck35 on Jan 14, 2012 10:35 PM EST reply actions

absolutely

but as ive said before, our players need to act like, and even become professionals

by mp987987 on Jan 14, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree with the comments on the postgame show

I didn’t see a lack of effort from the Knicks tonight, did you guys? We saw games earlier this season where there was a clear lack of effort defensively, but tonight I think we just got burned by a good team.

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 10:36 PM EST reply actions

I do agree with Hahn on Amar'e tho. With completely suspect D, Amar'e without his O is not pretty.

Combine a low shooting % with the turnovers and its easy to see how the game got away fast

by screamedia on Jan 14, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

That's true, but

I kind of shrug my shoulders at his shooting percentage. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but he’s going to start hitting them. It might be 5 games from now, it might be 10 games from now, but he’s not going to finish the season shooting 25% on jumpers.

by Joamiq on Jan 14, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Also true, but in a shortened season we're 4-5 games for a quarter done so the measuring stick for me is getting shorter.

I hate waiting to see what BD brings and I’m really losing patience with the SG position. I didn’t expect to win this game but dudes gotta start hitting shots. It’s not like we’re deep enuff and have options. Bibby hit a couple 3’s but didn’t get many shots (4 in 20 min) Our guys in the paint are gonna continue to get beat up til teams start respecting our outside game. I’ll shut up tho cuz I’m just gonna get whiny now.

by screamedia on Jan 14, 2012 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

I kinda feel bad for Stat

I know he’s getting 19 mill and all but he’s not THE man anymore, and he’s got to deal with trade rumors whether they’re true or not. I gotta think this may have something to do with the season he’s having so far. We NEED a healthy and engaged Amare.
