Game Thread: Knicks vs. Suns- 1/18/12

Phoenix Suns at New York Knicks, Jan 18, 2012 7:30 PM EST

Evening, marbles! The Suns are in New York this evening, which is always a fun/awkward/grating experience, given that the guy who coaches the Knicks used to be a Phoenix fan or something. I've seen the last couple of Suns games, and they're a not a very good team, at least on one end of the floor. Phoenix's slow, saggy defense should-- SHOULD-- be just what New York's shooters need to get in a rhythm. There will certainly will be open looks. On the other hand, the Suns' offense, while nowhere near as zippy as it used to be, is pretty solid. Steve Nash and Marcin Gortat run a splendid pick-and-roll, and Phoenix has a couple guys who could punish New York from outside if left open (including our old friend Channing Frye, who will probably be guarded/ignored by Amar'e Stoudemire). Anyway, I'm hoping the Knicks can slow down a relatively effective Phoenix offense while exploiting their reinvigorating their own scoring on the other end.

Stat and Melo

Had no chemistry last season, they continue to have no chemistry this season. We re-signed one of the greatest PGs of our generation only to waste our amnesty clause on him and sign an overrated center. Our bench is one of, if not the worst bench in the entire league and that makes me unhappy

Without question

You present your case with hyperbole, and insinuate causality without actual proof. Not to mention that you conflate past performance with present value.

by jaybee on Jan 18, 2012 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sad about Chauncey Billups too

but he didn’t really fit the D’Antoni system, and was a stopgap for another year. However, we Instead we got a center who was able to shut down Dwight Howard, who will be a good player and a defensive leader for years to come

Stat and Melo… I don’t know. Chemistry could build itself, or maybe they need more play time separately.

But still, let’s be positive.

by DonMoosavi on Jan 18, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

The Knicks are 4-1 when Amar'e and Melo both score over 20 points

We dont need to have them throwing behind the back passes to be successful. Lebron and Wade actually don’t fit together that well except for on the fast break, and does tossing alley-oops back and forth really count as chemistry? In the halfcourt, their chemistry isn’t any better than Melo and Amar’e. Not saying Melo and Amar’e are better, but their chemistry isn’t that bad, it’s still just a work in progress.

Also, Tyson Chandler is posting the highest PER of his career, blocking more shots, and if I’m correct, was the only center besides Dwight Howard who was invited to the Olympic basketball camp.

Idle thought of the day:

Is the lure of Steve Nash coming to NY this offseason the only thing keeping D’Antoni from being fired?

Well Steve is coming regardless

I mean the guy lives here, loves it here and is still one of the best players in the league, despite his age. He’d be a great addition to this team

I'm pretty sure he still has the benefit of poor team management above him

and the possibility that the knicks will turn the season around (with or without his help) on his side.

Glen Rice, Mark Jackson, Anfernee Hardaway, Antonio McDyess, Dikembe Mutombo, Vin Baker, Antonio Davis, Steve Francis, Tracy McGrady and Chauncey Billups.

That would be one hell of a team in 1998

Number of players who made an all-star team after their time with the Knicks: 2 (Anthony Mason, Zach Randolph)

Star players who are past their prime

We haven’t had alot of those. Starbury was in his prime when we got him. Steve Francis was one of the best PGs in the league from 1999 to 2005, but when we got him at the peak of his career, he just lost the ability to play. Hardaway and Rose were great in the the 90s, but both were shells of their former selves when we got them

One of my favorite players. But Portland would be foolish not to pick up his option after this year, and it may take more than the MLE to get him back here. He’s certainly a little sour from that trade

As sensitive as big burly NBA players have proven to be,

Let’s ALL cool it on the Steve Nash Talks before Baron has a breakdown. That includes Hahn, ESPN at large, Zwerling specifically (just posted about it on that blog), and all of us a little

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 7:22 PM EST reply actions

Usually motivates players to do better

For example, if I remember correctly, when people threw out stuff about Nash to the Knicks or CP3 to the Knicks last year, Felton posted a trible double against Phoenix and like a 15 and 15 game against CP3.

Baron already has enough motivation, but that stuff might help

Let's hope it goes that way

Felton is a special kind of competitor. But we’ve seen half our team at least this year crumble under similar types of pressure

Most Likely to Have a Career Game Tracker

Tonight is a difficult choice as most of the Suns players are either old or very bad.
Last year Marcin Gortat would’ve been the cool choice, but he is somewhat neutralized tonight by the presence of Tyson Chandler.

But the Suns do have a stretch-4 in Channing Fyre and guys who can hit open 3s.

So tonight’s picks are….Channing Fyre and Jared Dudley!

Interesting fact: For the love of God do not leave these guys open.

by Landry for prez on Jan 18, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

Not just that, but blowing up the team is incredibly stupid

Given how illiquid the trade market is, it is likely that we will get less than fair value back for the players that some fans want to send out.

Where have you been the last decade or so

Every Knicks team in that period has been awful and we are tired of losing. I want the Knicks to be standing side by side with the Lakers, not sitting at the bottom of the league with the Portland Trail Blazers and Utah Jazz

by Guess Who's Back? on Jan 18, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Understandable, but

Knicks have maybe a 4 year window w/ Amare/Chandler/Melo. Going after proven guys makes a ton more sense right now.

by Mikel L on Jan 18, 2012 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

also true,

but why not focus on the future a little as well, and build a team like the Thunder that could be in legit contention for near a decade (vs. our “still building” with possibly only a few years left)?
Cut to Indiana and Philly as well

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I've been thinking we should throw the season

We’re not good enough to win, so let’s be bad enough to win big in the offseason. BAM blowing minds. The bad news is the wizards might not win 6 games all year, and we’re already there

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

This coming draft is supposed to be soooo deep that teams will do well in the middle of the first round

We just need to get ahold of a pick before the draft.

We’re all in with this starting front court. We need a PG who can gel it together, and a few more bench pieces.

And then what?

They’ll have windows closing as well. Especially seeing how young our core is. When you think about it, DWade is already 30.. Chemistry wins games, not talent. You think the last spurs championship was better than our team? Hell no, but they had enough chemistry and rapport to compete.

by Landry for prez on Jan 18, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well, depending on where the team is

After 4 years it will be time to rebuild. Over drool over John Wall’s free agency or something.

by Mikel L on Jan 18, 2012 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Haha John Wall is definitely the kind of Almost-There Talent

that we could brand and pay as a superstar, and see more disappointment. Respect for his game, but he’s not truly elite, and my guess is he won’t be in four years either

Here's a really basic question

Besides the obvious point guard thing, why the f can we be so, so bad? We’ve got two of the most dominant offensive players in the game. One of the best interior defenders. It’s just so weird that we can be really bad.

I was'nt calling anyone out here

the press has a habit of calling D’antoni an offensive genious. I know you like the team, I do too, but people don’t have to get sensitive because someone says something negative about the team.

by mrluck35 on Jan 18, 2012 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately,

job-holders seem only to be more and more inept as you go up from MDA. I agree with everything you’re saying though, make no mistake. My guess is D’Antoni knows he’s terrible, but he’s been hired for a lot of money, so he wouldn’t say no. Neither would I. It’s the idiots that hired him and have kept him around who are to blame

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

The Knicks are the perfect cure

for any teams problems. I cannot wait to see what a legit coach can do with this team. Melo and Amare need a coach who will kick them in the ass. Stat has a disturbing habit of mailing it in on plays and Melo takes too many shots, many of them horrible ones. This team has too much talent to suck like this espeially since the defense has been pretty good, now the offense sucks.

I hate Brooklyn

But having a team right by the N/Q/R line is pretty convenient. I’m looking forward to seeing other teams play there.

not as good for me as the numbered trains

but I’m definitely going to take advantage of that

That's what i like to hear!!

i hear the amenities are going to be ridiculous. hopefully the ticket prices aren’t

I try so hard to avoid exaggerations...

but it feels like last year never happened and we suck as usual

I feel sick. This just sucks.

THINGS TO BE HAPPY ABOUT

Shumpert had a great game except for that
The Knicks outrebounded the opponent by 16 including 18 offensive boards…and still lost. Good God
Shumpert dropped 20 and had 4 steals! And Fields 17 on 50% FG! Chandler had 17 boards!
Amar’e and Melo shot 12-44 combined. Harrellson inexplicably played only 8 minutes despite being clearly more productive than either

There was no point in even playing the game

And there isn’t really any point in the Knicks ever playing if Amare and Melo are just going to shoot stupid jumpers all day long

by Joamiq on Jan 18, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

I was about to be all :(

j/k. I completely agree. I appreciate the effort with the 11 boards, but if you can’t shoot, don’t shoot!

by Joamiq on Jan 18, 2012 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

who the hell is still putting him on the floor

he’s got to rest a few games. can’t fuck around with that ever especially (brace yourself for hackneyed comment) in a lockout-shortened condensed season

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that he needs rest

but to be fair, if Carmelo Anthony wants to play and if the medical staff doesn’t say no, there are only a couple of coaches in the league who could say no to him without backlash (and actually, one of them, Phil Jackson, is technically not in the league anymore)

by Joamiq on Jan 18, 2012 10:18 PM EST up reply actions

what about simply protecting an investment?

you could be right, but that doesn’t make IT right, you know?
Maybe coaches should ALL have that power, or enough balls not to give a shit about backlash

Question

Wouldnt that have been an 8 second violation when Jeffries fouled Nash? We used a foul to give but Nash was still in the backcourt when he was fouled again at 16.9 seconds left.
I think that was or would have been an 8 second violation if Dantoni wasn’t screaming to foul.

Imagine Tyson Chandler with Mosgrov as back up

Gallo, Wilson Chandler and STAT with Shump and B Davis in the back court?

That line up would score points. Damn you Dolan!

by I know smart people on Jan 18, 2012 10:05 PM EST reply actions

I don't think so...

Everybody on here conveniently forgets that Gallo and Wilson sucked about 2/3 of the time. All this pre trade love is a rewriting of history. Get over it all ready and root for the Knicks, not some bullshit mirage…

It’s fair to like the trade of course, but don’t make stuff up

by Joamiq on Jan 18, 2012 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

Wil would disappear

Gallo, even when the shot wasn’t falling, was one of the very best in the NBA at getting to the line. But I think the point is more about that team as a unit.

EXACTLY!!

Nuggets beat the 76ers tonight

Led by Andre Miller’s near triple double. To think, the Knicks could have traded Felton for him and been so much better this year.

by mindfeck on Jan 18, 2012 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

Of course, Gallo's standards are pretty high shootingwise

He shot .347 for us from 3 last year, which is obviously not great for him… but for perspective, Melo’s career 3P% is .321.

Mozgov is my main motherfucker

gf got me a mozgov autograph Rookie Ticket patch for hoidays bc she knowssss. she prob saw my web history because i was looking at these after the trade

but we all know it was ugly. on a personal note. I really miss STAT.

by 2NASHTY on Jan 18, 2012 10:05 PM EST reply actions

if we are destined to lose nash

I’d choose the knicks…just to see the nash STAT PnR again.

I know I should stop living in the past

But the Felton-STAT PnR offense reached heights that the team has not sniffed since the trade.

This team is going to get better though. Even if some of the problems are real and lasting, it can’t possibly stay THIS bad.

Melo needs to scale down the shots

and look for other people. I know Stat is a 100 million dollar man and all, but maybe him not being the man anymore and him being in trade rumors is affecting him as much as not having an effective PG. The defense has picked up at least.

I love Ricky Rubio.

he’s a ball player. a lot of guys do a couple things well, but he plays the shit out of some basketball
