we lost this game at the freethrow line

Yeah that's a big part

Melo and Amare missing, what, 32 shots doesn’t help either

Forget free throws

Melo and Amare combined to miss 8 (EIGHT) shots from 5 feet or less. They missed at least 3 layups and dunks off the top of my head. There’s your ballgame right there.

Not So Fun Fact: Jeffries tied for the team lead in FGs made and FG% off the bench tonight.

they need to step back and figure this out

Back to the drawing board. Yea, we need a point guard, but we should at least figure out how to beat a terrible team, when we have a few great players on our team.

Maybe

Melo should stop shooting so much if he can’t shoot because his wrist hurts. 5-22? Man, that hurts. Melo and Amar’e were 12-44, the rest of the team was 20-42.

D'antoni has been done for a long time

He knows it, his players know it, everyone knows it. It’s just a matter of not wanting to pay two coaches at the same time.

Dolans are always more about the money than the wins.

Just look at the Knicks when they play. They don’t give a sh**. D’antoni has given up on his system. He doesn’t have a contract extension or a PG. You really think this season is going to work for him? He was 1) set up from the start to fail 2) Is being successful at actually failing.

I've had this thought

and as much as i deplore D’Antoni’s system, I almost wish they’d cut this shit out and go back to it. just for this season

by mp987987 on Jan 18, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry but they're getting their shots. Hpw bout we put the blame where it belongs and admit they might want to start making those shots

Melo and Amar’e took dumb shots and also had ALOT of good takes that didn’t go in. Melo doesn’t properly use the PnR when say Chandler sets a screen for him alot – at least to my eyes – but rather dribbles back to reset for another post up or dribble drive. The chemistry is still missing and if you watched Phoenix, it’s awful nice having a point guard that can actually run and control the offense.

Well, Dudley and Fyre didn’t exactly pan out.

Nash killed the Knicks with 26 points and 11 assists.
Grant Hill and Shannon Brown both had 14 points, but the committee has decided to award Shannon Brown for his soul-crushing, triple bounce 3 that killed what little momentum the Knicks had.

Interesting fact: Watching the Knicks can be really depressing.

Melo played injured and went 5-22

I place this loss on D’antoni for not reducing his playing time in this game. The loss isn’t even that important. Why place extra stress on Melo’s body when he’s not contributing to the win? D’antoni should have sat Melo down and played Balkman.

I can't believe I'm defending D'Antoni so much when there are legit issues with his coaching but

how many coaches in the NBA have the stature to sit a team’s top star if he wants to play and if the medical staff clears him? I’d say Phil, Pop… and I think that’s it. If anyone else, unfortunately including D’Antoni, tries to do that, he risks alienating his star and making matters worse.

Defense wasn't the problem

Do you even watch games or just spout tired old cliches

by Tautologist on Jan 18, 2012 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

I watch every game

I also can see.

3rd quarter both teams scored 19
4th quarter both teams scored 27.

All it takes is a little DEFENSE. This team has offensive firepower, it doesn’t need as much work as the D does.

by Branta on Jan 18, 2012 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

In other words

How the hell do you let the Phoenix Suns score 27 on you in ANY quarter?

by Branta on Jan 18, 2012 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

The reason they scored 27 is opportunities

We outrebounded and I think evcentually won the turnover battle but we did not convert those turnovers. Horrible shots and embarrassing layups from Melo tonight. I can’t stress enuff that Amar’e and Melo may be stars, but they are not leaders. Shump lollygagged time off the clock and not fouling Nash and Chandler is right in his ear hollering. We got a defensive leader. Let’s hope Davis takes that reign on O.

Aside from Amare

our D is pretty solid

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!

by astromets on Jan 18, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Well,

coming into today they were 11th in defensive efficiency(& will probably improve after today’s game) which is an improvement from 21st last year. The problem is they’re 23rd in offensive efficiency after being 5th last year. The defense is decent enough, the real problem is the offense.

And if not, I turn around & say forget it.

by Brian. on Jan 18, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

The teams they've played have had more to do with their defensive efficiency

And if that’s how bad the offense is performing, doesn’t that say fire Mike even louder since that’s supposedly his thing?

by Branta on Jan 18, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

You're just someone who will never be satisfied

I have no explanations for the offense either, but Melo (tonight) and Amar’e are missing shots they routinely made last year (and in Melo’s case, has been making most of this season). That has nothing to do with D’Antoni.

Everybody said fire D’Antoni when we sucked at defense, and now we’re probably going to become a top 10 defensive team in the league after this game.

Only reason I could see for firing Mike is because the team just is not executing in any sort of fashion

5 ways to make the team just a little bit better:

1. Re-teach Amare how to shoot a basketball. He was automatic on those midrange jumpers last year. What happened?

2. Fix whatever’s wrong inside TD’s head so we have an actual offensive threat off the bench.

3. More pick-and-roll between Melo and Chandler, especially when Amare is on the bench.

4. Stop switching on defense. I can’t emphasize that enough.

5. Make Free Throws. That shouldn’t be too difficult.

by erniesto on Jan 18, 2012 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

you don't even have to call that play

just come out and set a pick, then roll to the basket

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!

by astromets on Jan 18, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

Several big reasons

1. Tyson Chandler’s range = Tyson Chandler’s wingspan, so when Amar’e rolls to the basket guess who’s man is waiting for him (you’ll notice the reverse is not true on Melo/Chandler PnR plays—Amare’s man usually stays with him on the weakside)

2. Amar’e doesn’t like to set real picks, he likes to quickly slip screens and flash to the basket. This means he often beats his man to the rim but you have to have really good timing to hit him with the pass and Melo’s not that great a passer

3. When they force a switch on a pick there’s not much of a mismatch to take advantage of because 3/4 can guard Stat and Melo with roughly equal effectiveness when they are 15-20 feet from the rim
