Is D'Antoni Trying to get himself fired?

In a recent fanpost Curre suggested that if the players and mgmt were not going to back him D'Antoni should just walk away since he would get payed anyway. I pointed out in a comment that even in the crazy world of Dolan you cannot quit and still get paid. That got me thinking that maybe D'Antoni is intentionally screwing up so that he will get fired and thus get his money.

Why else would he keep playing these lineups? If Melo is injured and cannot shoot then why is he playing? Why does our best 3 point shooter never get into the game? Why does Lin get no burn after averaging a triple double in D league? Why does the team play that stupid switching defense that forces our best interior defender out to the 3 point line? How can he keep putting Toney Douglas in games when it is clear that TD has forgotten how to play basketball? Why does Landry Fields only take 5 shots a game?

Dolan is the root of all evil.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

"Giants rely on fumbles and stripping the ball. If the pats secure the ball, then the pats win, but if they fumble or let the ball get striped than the giants win. every game the giants play they always benefit from the other teams bonehead mistakes (fumbled or striped) not from thier skills. The giants are a dirty team, I can’t think of any othe team as dirty as the giants. They try to strip the ball as hard as they can because they know they can’t win a fair game." by EaglesNeedD on Jan 23, 2012 2:01 AM EST

Hmmm....not a bad idea

Maybe if we all got little Dolan voodoo dolls and started pulling the arms, legs and heads off. Sell them outside the garden before games.

"Why does Lin get no burn after averaging a triple double in D league?"

Really? He averaged a triple double? In what, one game? In the d-league? Why not point out that he’s averaging 28 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds per 36 minutes for the Knicks, since that is also a totally meaningless statistic.

a slight exaggeration perhaps

but compared to what we are getting elsewhere, close enough

He's not trying to get fired

its the thrown together roster with minimal practices that are pushing toward that. The lack of guys on this roster that can create for others is excruciating. That and the lack of 3pt shooters, two things that really any coach needs nowadays.

Baron Davis getting in there will help the creating for others part as well as Shumpert learning more, but neither help the 3pt shooting. Or maybe making TD more of a catch and shoot guy will help that? TD always looks like he’s huffing and puffing out there, maybe less work is what he needs?

and Landry Fields takes 5 shots a game cuz he's scared to take more

if you think Pringles, a guy who wants everyone to shoot more, is stopping Landry from shooting you’re out of your mind. Also they keep putting Toney Douglas in games cuz there are no other options. Jeremy Lin is not another option.

wouldn't say scared...

i’d say he’s selective. i also think he knows his strengths and weaknesses and as melo gets better (we hope) at finding landry on his cuts, his shot attempts will go up. i also think he’s just starting to realize he’s actually needed on this team.

by bucketsncents on Jan 26, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think you can say that at this point

Lin has not had enough opportunity to make that assumption. Meanwhile Toney Douglas has had more than enough chances to show what he can do, which isn’t very much.

I would like to think that he is trying to get fired . . .

Because if this is really his best effort, then we are totally SCREWED!!

if i were him, i'd try to get fired too...

a year of this mess ending in a “letting go” is better than a few more weeks of this mess ending in a “letting go”… plus, i think with a different roster, MDA can still be a good coach.

and maybe this roster, with a different coach can be a better team.

Haha. I successfully did this once. Made bank.

I can’t blame him if he wants out. Dude’s aging like a president.

he is not trying to get fired.

He is trying to win with a roster that has flaws. This roster is not made for this coach and I don’t think any coach would do better. The two superstars don’t fit together as they are made for two different offenses. Before the trade went down, I remember hearing Steve Kerr talk about it and someone asked him if he thinks Amare and Melo could make Knicks contenders and he said he didn’t even believe they would be good together and I remember him saying “not at all” and he was right, but we have an owner who cares only for names and $ of course. He didn’t wait long before he raised ticket price’s and did it before he even knew they could work out together. It is now evident they can’t play with one another and MDA knows it better than all but he is being professional about it and being optimistic.

The guys we gave up were too much for just Carmelo and they were a better fit for us. I wasn’t against Carmelo coming here via free agency without having to give up Gallo and Chandler, and when the trade talks first started, it was supposed to be just Chandler, Eddy Curry expiring contract, draft pick and Anthony Randolph. As much as I love Chandler, i could have still gotten over it, but we lost far more than that and gave up too much. And just to show how low of an IQ number 7 has, when Berman asked him he felt NY gave up too much and this was a popular view by most of us, and all he could say is “who wouldn’t want a guy like me and Amare together on one roster” and I knew then that he isn’t a smart basketball player. Sure he is real smart about being able to force a trade, play in NY and get paid but not smart basketball wise.

I think arrogance is one of his problems and he would have been insulted if he had gotten traded for the above mentioned. I guess it makes him sleep better seeing that a team gutted its roster for him and it strokes his ego better.Makes him feel more valuable when he really isn’t. He is not made for this system and I hate to say it but he and stat will never play well together on consistent basis because they are different.

Why No Novak

The defense thing is driving me crazy. Why Chandler is at the top of the key half the time is beyond me. Another thing is why Novak is not getting any burn. The guy buries a couple of threes that never touch rim when he is allowed to play, but the coach never puts him out there in meaningful minutes. Why? Is his defense really that bad?

by James Foye on Jan 27, 2012 11:39 AM EST reply actions

This just in. Novak played in the last two games and shot 2-10 from 3!

That is 20% for all of you from Manhasset. Scrubs are what scrubs are no matter how much we want them to be more.

and what sucks is his contract, along with bibby's are guaranteed...

which means if we find someone else we want to bring in (ie. one of the guys playing in china), lin goes instead of novak and bibby, who are useless.

by bucketsncents on Jan 30, 2012 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

not necessarily there are options

1. Trade someone to a team that is either under the cap and has a roster spot.
2. Pull off a 2 for 1 trade which frees a roster spot.
3. Trade someone for a draft pick (most likely late 2nd rounder)
4. Get the player to agree to a buyout.

Lin is the easiest to get rid of because he can be waived without compensation but if they really want to keep him their are other options.

by Robert Curre on Jan 30, 2012 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Count me in for any of those scenarios...

of the 3, I’ll say Bibby is the deadest weight. A PG who can only, and allegedly, still hit the 3. That’s what Novak does… allegedly. Buying him out would be wonderful.

Sample size too small

I think he should take at least 25 shots before we throw him under the bus.
