Game Thread: Knicks at Heat- 1/27/12

New York Knicks at Miami Heat, Jan 27, 2012 8:00 PM EST

Evening, cheeseworms! It'll be the Knicks and Heat tonight in Mee-ah-mee. Carmelo Anthony, as you may have heard, will take the night off to lick his wounds (he actually licks them), which seems like a wise thing for him to do. And now all the pressure's gone! If the Knicks lose, they have a built-in excuse. If they win, it'll be the greatest thing ever! Excellent!

Oh, and Dwyane Wade's playing, so the Heat are more or less at full strength. Superb!

Oh, and here's some interesting news just twat by Jonah Ballow: The Knicks will start a backcourt of Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert, with Landry Fields moving up to the small forward spot to match up with LeBron James. That should go really well!

Comment here if you're watching along, check out Peninsula Is Mightier for things about the Heat, and remember not to post photos, .gifs, illegal streams, or Pig Latin love ballads in the thread.

No, your wrong.

Bosh will have 50, Lebron only gets 20 with a triple double and several blocks. Your should also watch, cause basketball is fun to watch.

I'm kind of torn about the starting decision.

I’ve always said Landry is more of a SF and Shumpert will probably end up being a SG… that being said, I can’t stress enough, Douglas isn’t a PG. I hope Balkman gets a lot of run tonight, even though he’ll most likely get in a foul trouble covering LeBron… I just like him covering him over Walker or Landry.

This game has . . .

Total clusterfuck written all over it.

There are so many possibilities on how this thing is gonna turn out. Most of these are quite bad possibilities of course.

They range from Knicks blowing out the Miami Heat by 15 points, all the way to the Heat absolutely pulverizing and embarrassing the Knicks and the Heat win by 50 points.

In that scenario, the end of the Heat bench plays the entire 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Of course, fat ass Curry would have a career high 42 points, as a little cherry on top of that nightmare sundae. Barf !

ESPN's Chris Palmer just tweeted . . .

ESPNChrisPalmer chris palmer

Knicks will start Iman Shumpert and Toney Douglas. So that’s what, 60 shots?

That would be funny except for that fact that it is a very good possibility.

by TheKnicksAreBack on Jan 27, 2012 7:15 PM EST reply actions

Why?

Landry has been playing well lately, and arguably better than either Shump or DWTDD over the last 3–4 games.

It's development

Gallo statistically speaking was pretty average until this year.

by lololol on Jan 27, 2012 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

he was league average in his first full season

Then a bit better in just his second season when only 22. Most players break out in their third year, so it shouldn’t be surprising that he’s approaching all-star range.

by mindfeck on Jan 27, 2012 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

The signs were all there last year

He WASN’T just a shooter last year. He scored well when his shot wasn’t falling because he was one of the very best in the entire league at getting to the line. People who didn’t notice weren’t paying attention.

by Joamiq on Jan 27, 2012 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

It feels like when you break up with a girl . . .

But then you start getting really horny and you start to regret getting rid of her. That is disturbingly how I feel about Gallo. Yes I know I need help, I am a Knicks fan for Christ’s sake so back off!

Welp
Tony Delk owns the all-time worst season TS% (.452 in ’98) for a player with a 25+ usage rate. Toney Douglas right now? .401.

Translation: if Toney Douglas keeps this up, he’ll crush the worst shooting display in NBA history by a volume shooter.

Ugh, tonight does not promising.

I’ll discount Wade, Bosh, Lebron because a) duh and b) I don’t like to pick opposing star players.
So, lets say… Norris Cole will drop like 20 on the Knicks solely on open 3s and back door cuts.

They’re setting picks and penetrating repeatedly, which is getting them to the line and getting them open shots. Also, even that college ball movement is superior to what they’ve done most of this season.

Important thing to take from 1st half

Our offense really opens up when our shots are going in. Our shots go in when we pass the ball around and really swing it. We pass the ball around and swing it a lot when Melo isn’t in the game.

by Edelorbe on Jan 27, 2012 9:27 PM EST reply actions

The are shooting .357...Only thing thats keeping them in the game is 3 point shooting

When Melo was playing they were still getting opens 3’s but missing them. Now they are hitting them. I honestly has nothing to do with melo that they are still in the game

by lololol on Jan 27, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

by TheKnicksAreBack on Jan 27, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yes but my theory on why they're going in

Is because all of the three point shots are in flow, and after 3-5 different guys have touched the ball. It’s a lot more difficult to hit a shot after standing around for an entire possession in a corner without touching the ball.

by Edelorbe on Jan 27, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

truth be told

it is a game of hot potato.

by eomede07 on Jan 27, 2012 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

because they don't know what to do on offense...

but without Melo on the court they DO know they must pass it around. You see this ecxact same “phenomenon” in pickup basketball games. Your teamed with guys, you don’t know what exactly to do. If you pass it around though, everyone will feel more comfortable. Eventually, the star needs to make shots. Someone needs to explain this concept to Melo.

Again, this is something every good PG knows. Watch a Chris Paul game and watch how he controls everything, gets EVERYONE involved (even when they’re missing shots), let’s everyone create shots, etc. In the 4th quarter, he looks for his own shot; PLUS his role players make those wide open threes because they’ve been feeling the ball in their hands the entire game. It’s completely mental part of the game, but it’s sooo important.

by Edelorbe on Jan 27, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

I can't believe I forgot Felton

but honestly he sucks. This is why I know Baron Davis will be awesome. D’Antoni’s system made Felton look like an All-Star and Chris Duhon look like a nice PG. Imagine what happens when you put an all-star PG in the system.

Oh you forgot him?

He’s not on Denver now so can’t be part of the trade.

by mindfeck on Jan 27, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Randolph was for Brewer

who was waived. Brewer would also be good on the Knicks. He could be the starting SG.

by mindfeck on Jan 27, 2012 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

maybe 5 years ago

He’s improved his shooting and he’s better than Fields and Shumpert. Those guys aren’t ready this year.

by mindfeck on Jan 27, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Oh they are

they’re just being asked to do too much for this Knicks team. Or do you actually believe Brewer would truly do a better job for the Knicks, being asked to be a starting SG, run pick-and-rolls, defend the other team’s best player, and be a great passer. This is Corey Brewer?

if its shump or toney, we have the worst starting PG in the league. Too bad, because they are pretty good 2-guards.

Toney, never. Lin, maybe. Bibby, slow but he has a clue. Why is this so hard?

I don’t think the knick are taking better shots than they normally do…the 3’s were just falling early today

Worst gaurd play in the league -- easily

Wow… horrendous D-League gaurd play. Douglas literally tripped over the half court line (watch the tape). Our PGs and SGs (minus Walker… lights out!) coughed up so many balls.

I watched so many cutters gone unnoticed… we need a real point gaurd who can anticipate those precious milliseconds when a slasher is actually open.

I'm surprised people are so upset

Granted, we have not played particularly well tonight, but we’re also only down by 7 to the Heat without Melo. Mixed in between the (plentiful) highlight reel plays, the Knicks have played some excellent defense.

by Joamiq on Jan 27, 2012 10:35 PM EST reply actions

I dont think anyone is upset...

just frustrated to watch another game lost because our guards are horrible

by Edelorbe on Jan 27, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I mean

we lost this game because they’re better than us, pretty much. But at least we showed up and played pretty hard.

by Joamiq on Jan 27, 2012 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

agreed. Our guards play like they are in the Y.

Don’t pass to cutters or set up people for good shots. Chandler never looks for the ball because he knows he’s not getting it and when they do pass it he’s not even there any more..

and as I type this They pass to him, but only because the shot wasn’t there. Jump passes, BAD IDEA, except in certain video games…
