Game Thread: Knicks at Rockets- 1/28/12

New York Knicks at Houston Rockets, Jan 28, 2012 8:00 PM EST

Evening, pond donkeys! The Knicks hit the final stop on their road trip tonight with their first match-up of the season against the Houston Rockets. The Rockets are 11-8 and are coming off a vigorous squashing of the Wizards last night. They'll be without Kevin Martin, while the Knicks will once again play sans Carmelo Anthony (and Baron Davis).

Interesting little lineup change for this evening: Bill Walker will start, which makes sense considering his fine shooting (and decent defense, I might add) in last night's game against the Heat. The interesting part is that, like he did in the second half of last night's game, Walker will start ahead of Iman Shumpert, with Toney Douglas staying in the lineup. So, your starters one through three are Douglas, Landry Fields, and Walker. It's possible that Baron Davis will be ready to start by Tuesday (even if he plays just a few minutes, D'Antoni sounded like he'd run Davis with the first unit), but if he doesn't, who's the starting point guard? Neither Douglas nor Shumpert has been particularly useful of late.

Anyway, that's the lineup for tonight. Comment here if you're watching, remember to visit The Dream Shake, and please refrain from posting photos, .gifs, illegal streams, or Garfield-themed street art in the thread. Tip-off's at 8.

He's smart

Because he gets a lot of value out of “lesser players”. Exhibits: Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry, Kyle Lowry. We’d be blessed to have a GM who could find value on the scrap heap. He got Scola for NOTHING.

by DangerZone on Jan 28, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough but...

It’s not particularly difficult to identify excellent players. Everyone can do that. And acquiring them has a lot to do with luck. What sets quality GMs apart is the ability to find the diamonds in the rough. RC Buford isn’t a good GM because he happened to win the lottery and have Duncan fall into his lap. He’s a great GM because he got Ginobili in the 2nd round and Parker at the end of the 1st and Bowen off the scrap heap. Morey’s has some bad luck with stars and that’s what has held the Rockets back, at least in my opinion.

You are saying NOTHING.

I have yet to hear a single specific, pointed criticism of D’Antoni from you. I have specific things that I think he could do better. All you can say is that everything he does is wrong.

Did it ever occur to you that what he says in a postgame might not be exactly what he says behind the scenes?

by Joamiq on Jan 28, 2012 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

I think he just has to be measured when hes speaking to the media

by astromets on Jan 28, 2012 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

No, that is not what he's coaching.

Above you were talking about what he says in the postgame. If you listened to what he said today before the game, he said that the Knicks blew about 25 opportunities to hit guys for easy layups inside and took 3s instead. To be clear, he was saying that the 3s were a problem. If you’re going to make claims about his coaching style, pay attention first.

Also, the Knicks are not shooting early in the clock this year. Well, they often are, but I think pacewise this is probably the slowest D’Antoni team yet. It most certainly is not 7sol.

by Joamiq on Jan 28, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Nope.

I am fairly certain that this year’s Knicks shoot early in the clock less than any of D’Antoni’s previous teams. Yes, D’Antoni likes the 3, but he does not like it as much as the players shot it last night.

by Joamiq on Jan 28, 2012 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

And I think you're conflating post-game comments with "coaching style"

I still haven’t seen a legitimate suggestion of what specific things he ought to do differently other than yell a lot (which he’s done).

yell more?

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!

by astromets on Jan 28, 2012 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

Ok Seth:

IMHO he should be coaching less threes, less quick shots, use timeouts strategically to stop runs (I feel like every loss begins with a run against our bench where MDA doesn’t try to stop it with a timeout)…this is his coaching style, what he believes in, that 7 seconds stuff, and when it doesn’t work he just gives up. He even did it in the playoffs, waving the white flag with nutso lineups when the game seemed lost.

by east_harlem on Jan 28, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

He is not coaching threes and quick shots.

If that is what you think, you simply have not been watching this team closely at all.

This. Team. Is. Not. Playing. 7sol.

I just don't agree with this

It used to be fun to talk up our players, but not anymore. Tony Douglas no longer is DWTDD and Bully is now Sloppy. We don’t have a proper playmaker to run the offense, Fields like to keep trying out that invisible suit he got for Christmas, and we keep wanting to give credit to our D which still is not very good at stopping the other teams shooters. Our guards suck. Our bench sucks. I think we actually miss Melo and Jorts because the depth behind them is worse. Bad trades will buy you that lack of depth, but nonetheless, but I’d rather have Melo than see Bully start another game. And absolutely hate ISO basketball, but I also believe with proper ball movement he can be a very good player in this system. It really sucks to me not having a true 1 and 2 guard starting lineup.

IN all seriousness....

The Rockets are good. We are playing without a point guard (as we have all season) and Melo (who is inarguably our best player, no matter what the haters say) is out. AND we get a point guard on Tuesday!!!! Let’s hear it for Baron!

I mean what other hope do we have????

JR Smith is gonna come back from China nd save us? Or K Mart for that matter? Right.

JR or Wilson would fill more of a need than KMart

I feel like he would jam things up down low even more

Let's stop it man. There comes a time when players need to play.

If your best player isn’t on the floor, you as a player should be happy for this wonderful opportunity and produce. When your best player comeback, you become less than a role player. If I am douglas, fields, walker,….etc I go off and shock the world and bring a w for team. While doing it in a blowout fashion.

I'm with you...

and I don’t think it’s lack of effort. It is just not happening! I have no explanation.

Can we please sign ga.

We need another creator on the knicks. I’m underage but the way this team keeps playing….. I need a drink or something to distract me. Time to put on the ps3 and play nba 2k12

We will win the next game by 30

seriously though, MDA looks more and more redfaced as the year progresses. One gets the sense that he absolutely detests this team.

Life is what you make it brothers....
