Game Thread: Knicks at Rockets- 1/28/12
New York Knicks at Houston Rockets, Jan 28, 2012 8:00 PM EST
Evening, pond donkeys! The Knicks hit the final stop on their road trip tonight with their first match-up of the season against the Houston Rockets. The Rockets are 11-8 and are coming off a vigorous squashing of the Wizards last night. They'll be without Kevin Martin, while the Knicks will once again play sans Carmelo Anthony (and Baron Davis).
Interesting little lineup change for this evening: Bill Walker will start, which makes sense considering his fine shooting (and decent defense, I might add) in last night's game against the Heat. The interesting part is that, like he did in the second half of last night's game, Walker will start ahead of Iman Shumpert, with Toney Douglas staying in the lineup. So, your starters one through three are Douglas, Landry Fields, and Walker. It's possible that Baron Davis will be ready to start by Tuesday (even if he plays just a few minutes, D'Antoni sounded like he'd run Davis with the first unit), but if he doesn't, who's the starting point guard? Neither Douglas nor Shumpert has been particularly useful of late.
Anyway, that's the lineup for tonight. Comment here if you're watching, remember to visit The Dream Shake, and please refrain from posting photos, .gifs, illegal streams, or Garfield-themed street art in the thread. Tip-off's at 8.

wasn't he 4 of 8 from deep?
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
yes but 3-13 in the second half is very much less than ideal
That’s stone cold chucking instead of directing and controlling the offense. From about the 3 minute mark or more of the 3 quarter on, he left his head on the bench
Please let the offense flow iteratively better than last night
That’s all I would like to ask.

Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump
He's smart
Because he gets a lot of value out of “lesser players”. Exhibits: Chuck Hayes, Carl Landry, Kyle Lowry. We’d be blessed to have a GM who could find value on the scrap heap. He got Scola for NOTHING.
Seems like a lot of shuffling around of slightly above average players
They haven’t scared anyone in years. Call me when they get somewhere in the playoffs.
How many years has he been there?
His press is larger than his accomplishments.
Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump
Fair enough but...
It’s not particularly difficult to identify excellent players. Everyone can do that. And acquiring them has a lot to do with luck. What sets quality GMs apart is the ability to find the diamonds in the rough. RC Buford isn’t a good GM because he happened to win the lottery and have Duncan fall into his lap. He’s a great GM because he got Ginobili in the 2nd round and Parker at the end of the 1st and Bowen off the scrap heap. Morey’s has some bad luck with stars and that’s what has held the Rockets back, at least in my opinion.
Kind of unfair
given that the franchise player he inherited had the last few years of his career decimated by injury.
I'm looking at an 11-8 record
An odd team to take this kind of shot at
Jefferies getting no respect

by Landry for prez on Jan 28, 2012 9:49 PM EST reply actions
Yo, I can't blame the players, for real the way MDA does his lineups, timeouts, and scheme is just indefensible.
Probably not much better, but it seems to me that a serious coach would recognize the game slipping away and call a timeout, switch the lineups, try to jolt his team. Game after game I see the Knicks falling into despair and no timeout whistle.
How is it that Lin starts the 4th quarter??
I'm just seeing no effort from D'Antoni to try and take control of this team. I can't stand his nonchalance.
Then I don't think you're paying attention.
The guy spent a lot of the first half literally directing his players aroudn the court. He was SCREAMING at them and point to spots on the floor while they were running the offense.

I think he just has to be measured when hes speaking to the media

I think we’re arguing that it would have done absolutely nothing to change anything. And he knows that.
Seems to me that if Doc Rivers can will his team past a 27 point deficit, then there's no excuse for that type of hopelessness.

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
No, that is not what he's coaching.
Above you were talking about what he says in the postgame. If you listened to what he said today before the game, he said that the Knicks blew about 25 opportunities to hit guys for easy layups inside and took 3s instead. To be clear, he was saying that the 3s were a problem. If you’re going to make claims about his coaching style, pay attention first.
Also, the Knicks are not shooting early in the clock this year. Well, they often are, but I think pacewise this is probably the slowest D’Antoni team yet. It most certainly is not 7sol.
They are shooting early in the clock. And don't tell me that Mike D'Antoni doesn't coach the 3 ball. Everybody shoots more threes in his system, common knowledge.

Agreed, but I have a problem with MDA's coaching style being "go go go, shoot shoot shoot" and putting everything on the altar of "flow." Call a f*cking timeout man, don't give up just cuz your "flow" ain't working or you don't have a perfect PG or whtev
by east_harlem on Jan 28, 2012 10:08 PM EST up reply actions
And I think you're conflating post-game comments with "coaching style"
I still haven’t seen a legitimate suggestion of what specific things he ought to do differently other than yell a lot (which he’s done).
yell more?
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Ok Seth:
IMHO he should be coaching less threes, less quick shots, use timeouts strategically to stop runs (I feel like every loss begins with a run against our bench where MDA doesn’t try to stop it with a timeout)…this is his coaching style, what he believes in, that 7 seconds stuff, and when it doesn’t work he just gives up. He even did it in the playoffs, waving the white flag with nutso lineups when the game seemed lost.
by east_harlem on Jan 28, 2012 10:16 PM EST up reply actions
He is not coaching threes and quick shots.
If that is what you think, you simply have not been watching this team closely at all.
This. Team. Is. Not. Playing. 7sol.

These Knicks consistently take quick, ill-advised shots, especially threes. Not even worth arguing, you’ve seen it but you’re probably just blaming it on Melo.

I just don't agree with this
It used to be fun to talk up our players, but not anymore. Tony Douglas no longer is DWTDD and Bully is now Sloppy. We don’t have a proper playmaker to run the offense, Fields like to keep trying out that invisible suit he got for Christmas, and we keep wanting to give credit to our D which still is not very good at stopping the other teams shooters. Our guards suck. Our bench sucks. I think we actually miss Melo and Jorts because the depth behind them is worse. Bad trades will buy you that lack of depth, but nonetheless, but I’d rather have Melo than see Bully start another game. And absolutely hate ISO basketball, but I also believe with proper ball movement he can be a very good player in this system. It really sucks to me not having a true 1 and 2 guard starting lineup.
he's right Dantoni should shoot the next man to miss a shot

this is true
but its like these guys haven’t exactly been playing in games regularly and are not used to the pace of the game. It just felt a little like throwing them out and seeing if it would work. I mean I am sure the coaching staff anticipated guys being tired maybe it would’ve been better if they had gotten some minutes through out the road trip instead getting thrown out there cold.

And we could have just waited a year and got Melo and not have to traded away the
Franchise. But nook. Dolan had to make the trade.

There's no guarantee that Melo would have signed here
And even if he did that would mean we wouldn’t have both Chandlers. The only real difference is felton and gallo. But we wouldn’t have Tyson.
Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump
How do you lose Tyson you think he came here just because
Melo is here?

I think he came here because we could offer him $58 million
Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump
didn't you know?
he also assassinated JFK

Life is what you make it brothers....
Mark Jackson
is the head coach of the Warriors
That was the trade I was hoping for last year...real talk.
Im sure we can coax Mark to come here though right?
Life is what you make it brothers....
you knew they were going to trade DWill last year

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
Flynn can't get minutes at all. (Understandable with Dragic and Lowry)
But even Flynn would have to be better than Toney, right?
Why are mosquitoes hatching in our offense?

In other news, the Giants and the Yanks continue to be the only teams that don't embarrass our city.

No love for the Rangers?
It’s okay I don’t watch hockey either

Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump

Mets are bankrupt…not sure I’d be getting on the bombers right now
Life is what you make it brothers....
the two have nothing in common
but if you leave NY, you notice how much people dislike the Yankees and their fans – they assume all fans are of the Jersey Shore variety and don’t believe I am not a NYer cause I talk with no accent (I am in the south now)
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
And lots of people hate the patriots and their fans
And lots of people hate the lakers and their fans
That’s the price of being the best
Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump
True that
truth be told, its more jealousy of NYers than anything. Bostonites are just a bunch of douchebags, thats just not debatable.
Life is what you make it brothers....
haha
I put that as my sig back in August, when that team was pissing me off with all the injuries and bs. It’s more of a joke, though it is in my nature to believe in miracles until August for baseball :P
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
IN all seriousness....
The Rockets are good. We are playing without a point guard (as we have all season) and Melo (who is inarguably our best player, no matter what the haters say) is out. AND we get a point guard on Tuesday!!!! Let’s hear it for Baron!
I mean what other hope do we have????
JR Smith is gonna come back from China nd save us? Or K Mart for that matter? Right.
JR or Wilson would fill more of a need than KMart
I feel like he would jam things up down low even more

Let's stop it man. There comes a time when players need to play.
If your best player isn’t on the floor, you as a player should be happy for this wonderful opportunity and produce. When your best player comeback, you become less than a role player. If I am douglas, fields, walker,….etc I go off and shock the world and bring a w for team. While doing it in a blowout fashion.
I'm with you...
and I don’t think it’s lack of effort. It is just not happening! I have no explanation.
Can we please sign ga.
We need another creator on the knicks. I’m underage but the way this team keeps playing….. I need a drink or something to distract me. Time to put on the ps3 and play nba 2k12
or something green I bet
especially since you playing video games now
2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!
We will win the next game by 30
seriously though, MDA looks more and more redfaced as the year progresses. One gets the sense that he absolutely detests this team.
