Everyone on here is calling for D'Antoni's head.

I am, by no means, defending him, but just curious: Who would you guys hire once he’s gone (besides Phil Jackson)?

Ideally: Jackson, Jerry Sloan or Jeff Van Gundy

Realistically: Mike Woodson would be a good option

He would just be another option. Not a good one. He didn’t really do well with very good roster in Atlanta

He did as well as could be expected in Atlanta

That was a team that had no superstar (Joe Johnson doesn’t count as a star) and still gave better teams fits in the playoffs. They were at best the 4th best team in the East in his tenure and made the conference semis his last two years.

He also should get some credit for this year’s defensive improvement.

by semsemma on Jan 28, 2012 10:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Really??? D'Antoni is not the problem.

It’s the shit guards we have. D’Antoni knows how to coach but he relys on a strong point to run the show and that is something we don’t have until Baron comes back. PLease temper your expectations until we have Baron running point. Things could change DRASTICALLY…

by robk on Jan 28, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

Here's an example from Shumpert's NBA Draft profile

“Strengths: Very strong for a point guard … Uses his strength well on both offense and defense … Scary in transition … Excellent slasher … Defenders practically bounce off him when he drives in the paint … Able to finish in spectacular fashion at the rim, displaying fantastic hang-time and body-control”

“Weaknesses: Very poor jump shooter, and hasn’t shown any improvement in this area during his three-year career with Georgia Tech”

So why does he do nothing but jack up threes? In a real offensive system, he would be taught to play to his strengths, not his weaknesses.

only so much you can do tho

if they give you the three, gotta hit the three. period. If they decide to pack it in, no amount of slashing is gonna help.

by ubd on Jan 28, 2012 10:59 PM EST up reply actions

people who diminish valid explanation call reasons "excuses"

while people who champion logical cause and effect will call an excuse a “reason”

a turd is a turd, it doesn’t matter why it’s in the middle of you’re living room floor, it shouldn’t be there yet it is. Whatever the reason for it being there in the first place, one could call it an “excuse” or “reason” and neither term would be wrong but the term used would say much more about the person speaking it than the actual mess itself.

If you made it to the NBA then . . .

You got to be able to do something right. Otherwise, all of us would be playing in the NBA.

Dantoni’s secret formula on how to be conidered an Offensive Genius:

Plan A:
Pray that your team consists of good three point shooters + let them shoot as many as they possibly can = a win.

Plan B:
If team consists of shitty three point shooters + let them shoot as many as possible and pray they go in = a loss and proof that “One Trick Pony” title is far more accurate than “Offensive Genius” title.

I have a friend who is the Knicks towel boy and he cam across a book on Dantoni’s desk one night when no one was around.

He said is was an extremely thick book with the title of “How to Coach, the Mike Dantoni Way.” Like most of us, he could not resist the urge to peek inside.

He was shocked that all the pages were mostly blank except for the above secret formula and some Dantoni doodles. Most were unflattering doodles of Balkman, Isiah, and Phil Jackson.

“Helter Skelter” was also written on many pages in what appeared to be human blood.

My friend was totally creeped out and resigned the next day. I can not blame him, for he was permenantly scarred for life.

True story!

None of our players strength is being a point guard...

and that it perhaps the most important position on the floor. It’s a devastating problem no matter who is coaching. Plus, players have to execute, I think our guards execution this season has been awful.

I liked P&T initially because the community here seemed relatively rational compared to others. This is no longer a fun place to be.

I think the Knicks are going to turn it around. But perspective doesn’t seem to be the way around here anymore. I’ll keep my thoughts to myself from now on.

Well...

It’s easy to have perspective when you expect to suck, and do suck as the Knicks have in recent memory. Then last year was great because Stat came in and made us pretty dam good.

This year we expected to be great, but didnt realize that without an offseason, there was no time to build cohesive team chemistry. So we complain and call for everyone’s head.

If say, by March with a healthy Melo and Baron Davis we still suck…. PANIC MODE IS JUSTIFIED.

Shumpert: “Defenders practically bounce off him when he drives in the paint”

Fields: “He is extremely good going to the basket, where he has terrific patience and a wide variety of counter moves he can use in order to get the best shot”

Walker: “An absolutely jaw dropping, electrifying dunker capable of getting air like the greatest dunkers of all time, Jordan, Dominique, Vince Carter, Josh Smith etc.”

Douglas: “Has the strength and willingness to outmuscle smaller defenders inside”

The list

Shumpert – How many layups and dunks has he missed this season – Plenty
Fields – Same problem as above as well as starring in the Invisible Man Takes Manhattan
Walker – Runs over more people than Grand Theft Auto and is terrible when he puts the ball on the floor
Douglas – worries far too damn much about who’s around him than actually finishing at the rim and cannot run a break and cannot hit a player with the ball where it needs to be for them to finish in rhythm or cleanly

Walker and TD I have lost patience with. Shumpert will develop in time. Fields is much like Amar’e in my opinion, in that he is only effective at his best with a good ballhandler creating for him. Our guards suck.

I really like Tyson - true leader on the court

I still believe this will turn around but I am most definately pissed with the lack of attention to detail on this team in our backcourt. TD should’ve figured it out by now but he just isn’t what we wish he was. He needs to return to the bench and be a shooter and focus on that, he is a scorer and everything else just gets in the way of his game.

With Chandler, once I got past the fact he isn’t the type of Center I knew and loved in Ewing and Olajuwuan in regards to scoring, he has become my favorite player. He talks and he means it and applies the effort – I never thought that of Amar’e and don’t think that now of him. I’m fine with that now, but him being captain just doesn’t gel with my common sense.

'he should've figured it out by now but he just isn't what we wish he was. he needs to return to the bench and be a shooter...'

that is not his responsibility nor anything we can control. He is doing what MDA asks of him, and when he went to the bench to be the scorer, he stunk there too. Personally, I think his shoulder is not fully healed yet – he did keep looking in pain during the Heat game. There are not many other reasons his play would have dropped this far off a ledge, unless he also needs a main facilitator in the game – not even when he is playing, but just in there – to take the pressure off of him. People have said Lin is outta control, but TD looks outta control a lot to me.

we need domination from the guards

When the guards have chemistry and pride on both ends ofn the floor then the team starts to win and take on a new dimension. Our bigs strugle when the guards are unsure and weak.proof: felton and landry with chemistry gave stat and then career stats. Chauncey and td with chem. Led to knick wins. Bottom line if baron and the guards can’t dvelop a chemistry and tight group of guards worth noting, then we will continue on this path to nowhere.

stat is ny man

Of course its depressing when your star isn’t starring. He’s hearing trade talks and its only his second year here!

by Dan D'antoni on Jan 28, 2012 11:03 PM EST via mobile reply actions

He needs to step up...

in his interviews and on the court. The guy spends more time plugging his appearance on some shitty cable than he does talking about the Knicks winning. He is the shittiest interview, I just want him to say “Fuck this shit man, we are gonna start playing so Ball now!” but all I here is “yo, check out my appearance on (insert shitty show’s name here), it was really great to work with everybody on this. Plus I’m in Vogue next month!!!!”

STAT, BE WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE!!! Don’t just flex for the cameras, you look like a douchebag.

I know exactly what you mean

and I think I harped on this before, but I was getting worried during the summer, when I was reading about him traveling all over the world, that he wouldn’t be ready if the lockout ended. When do you get the time to focus on your game? To work out? To get better? He claimed to have improved his dribbling, but he looks terrible when he puts the ball on the floor, and his reliable jumper looks rusty. I know he can turn this around, but he better not do that shit again this summer. I want him in the same gym D Rose is in all summer, making himself elite instead of expecting it

You are aware that he wasn't medically cleared to work out, right?

And I’m sure you know that he has a reputation as a gym freak.

I didn't realize he wasn't cleared to work out this past summer, but knew he normally did

then his rust makes much more sense

Patrick Ewing should be the next coach of the Knicks

thats ok with me. ewing is a cool dude.

Maybe he can mentor jerome jordan on how to dunk. Kid nearly broke his wrist in garbage time dunking

by Dan D'antoni on Jan 28, 2012 11:18 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

haha yeah that was this season in 1 play

But the way I look at it is
1. Just like MDA was regarded as a savior after Isaiah Patrick can fill that role, and everybody already loves him so he will have the city in the palm of his hand, a city that could be in open revolt by the time this season ends.
2. This is Ewing’s shot, MDA has failed to adapt for his whole tenure here. Patrick knows this is his shot at coaching, and its something he’s wanted for so long, that he could come in with a plan, ready to work and teach and help the Knicks actually IMPROVE, something D’Antoni has not done.
3. He’ll preach D. Ewing played when the Knicks were extremely aggressive, and even as an assistant the Magic are a pretty good defensive team.
4. He commands respect from everybody and knows what it takes to win in NY

it would be somewhat risky for him to come to NY to coach

considering how much hate fans give to any coach who doesn’t succeed here. I would hate to hear the fans calling for him to get fired, but can you guarantee it wouldn’t happen?

Until the team keeps sucking, 'cause Ewing has never coached shit

I guess you don’t remember that NY fans were somewhat shitty to Ewing even when he was a player here? Why would it be any different as coach? And what the fuck does he know about running a team?

well what does MDA know??

the Knicks need someone new, a totally different direction

no because MDA

failed to adapt and change his system when the Knicks had no PG

No because the players failed to adapt their game to the system and benefit the players they're playing with

including ISO’s and chucking early in the clock and enuff turnovers to kill any momentum gained. Simon says you are wrong. He has adapted, but the personnel is what it is

Shooting Guard, Point Guard, Combo or What Have You????

The best PER among our backcourt heros is Landry Fields at 12+ while the rest are in single digits. Poor Toney Douglas , rookie of the year at the quarter pole, same with Landry Fields last year, and a week ago Iman S….. was getting the same push from Knick’s fans. I forgot who said it, but if you are talking about rookies a quarter of the way through the season “your team” is in serious trouble. We are possed of the “backcourt that can not shoot straight.” In under no circumstances let us delude ourselves that Baron Davis is the answer. He will make a positive difference, but please look at the other guards on the roster. BLOW IT UP – SEND DOLAN TO THE MOON!!! I wonder if I will live to see another Knicks’ championship team.

by An Old Fart on Jan 28, 2012 11:27 PM EST reply actions

To me, the most frustrating thing about this team

is the fact that they are just waiting for Boom to get healthy, instead of going out and signing someone to run the point. It really didn’t take long to see that we would benefit from a more experience PG and that Bibby would not be that guy. Has Arenas really fallen that low that we couldn’t have given him a shot several weeks ago? It’s clearly not like he is that likable, as Bibby is, so if it didn’t work out no one would care if we just turned around and released him. Tonight, Jeremy Lin ran the best PnR with Amare that I can remember from this season. Help me out here Seth, ye of the hopefully now working synergy account, how much have we even run the PnR with STAT this season? I don’t think Lin is an answer yet, though I do hope he continues to improve and becomes an important role player for this team, but tonight it looked like he was the second best PG on the team, behind the ‘savior’ Baron Davis – which is sad for multiple reasons, but maybe none more so than the fact that Bibby should be capable at running point.

and I mentioned this before

but given his early struggles, and that he likely will be replaced, Devon Harris could probably be had relatively cheap and had really started distributing well for NJ the past few years before the trade. The Knicks have scorers, they need distributors and relying solely on Boom, or improvements from TD/Shump/Lin, seems short sighted

Areans is done

There is a reason that zero teams in the NBA want the headache. Devon Harris = Toney Douglas with a $9m/year contract. No thank you.

by flossy on Jan 29, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

The truth of the matter

Is that it’s not possible to sign a starting-caliber NBA PG haflway through the season, because the good ones are all playing somewhere. And we don’t have the means to trade for one, because this roster is built on 3 massive contracts that we can’t or won’t trade, and a bunch of minimum-salary garbage that no other team wants, save for (maybe) Iman Shumpert.

by flossy on Jan 29, 2012 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

they are worth trying

I keep forgetting the 9 mil tag, but at this point it is half that and he is muuuuuuuuch better than TD will ever be at PG.

because this roster is built on 3 massive contracts that we can’t or won’t trade,

I dont advocate any firings or trades at this point but if we were inclined to, we’d be able to move any one of those big contracts easy.

One of the things I hated most over my life as a Knicks fans is how we’d habitually overpay people but we didn’t offer any of those three guys anything any other NBA team would not have offered them.

If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out but we made good offers and got three great players that can’t all seem to get rolling on the same page together at the same time.

Does losing now hurt their value? Sure it does, but not so much that they are now unmovable. One bad season doesn’t erase several seasons of greatness for these guys. That’d be short sighted. There will be GM’s who will gamble a change in scenery or a different coach, or cast of characters will be enough to get any of those guys on track.

Again, I don’t advocate any trades, just saying it really shouldn’t be to hard to do, if that’s what the front office wanted to do.
