Game Thread: Knicks vs. Pistons- 1/31/12

Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, Jan 31, 2012 7:30 PM EST

Good evening, ladyburps! The Knicks return home tonight to play the Pistons, a team that's also lost nine of its last ten games. They got crushed in Milwaukee last night and are, in fact, in the middle of a road back-to-back-to-back that will take them to New Jersey tomorrow night.

As of right now, Carmelo Anthony and his ankle remain a game time decision. The word is that he'll test the ankle out a bit before tip-off, then make his decision accordingly. At least theoretically, the Knicks should be able to beat these sorry Pistons with or withou--

Oh wait, nevermind. He's playing. Anyway, the Knicks should be able to win this one-- they crushed Detroit a couple weeks ago-- but we know full well that "should" predicts nothing this season.

Comment here if you're watching, check out Detroit Bad Boys for Pistons things, and remember not to post any photos, .gifs, illegal streams, or links to online eyepatch warehouses in the thread. <3<3<3

Was lookin forward to a Melo diddy debut against the bulls

…but this should be a get the rust off type game for melo to enter the chicago contest on point. Take it easy on that ankle Melo. Just feed it to Amare..let him get his tonight.

"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"

Fk it.. We know what Toney Douglas

brings to the point guard spot. I say give LIn some burn with the starters. Dont start him..but let him be the first pg off the bench. Give him some talent around him to see what he does. Do this BEFORE Baron Davis comes back. I want to see how amare and chandler do with this slashing pg who seems to have a knack to get to the lane and dish (and sometimes turn it over)

It depends on how the rest of the team performs

Melo usually doesn’t enter chuck mode unless everyone else is playing like crap.

Jeremy Lin

Has he accomplished anything remotely worth justifying these irrational hopes we’re laying upon him? And is anyone else other than myself panicked at the prospect of him guarding the D-Roses and Rondos of this league? He got his ankles demolished in the Houston game, I’m not at all impressed with him.

by east_harlem on Jan 31, 2012 7:12 PM EST reply actions

I'm hoping he's puts his

jersey on the right way and sits on the right bench.

too much?

by I know smart people on Jan 31, 2012 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

Does it have to be on forwards?

Or is “head-hole up” enough to qualify as right?

by Seth on Jan 31, 2012 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

ok if its backwards but

if he puts his head through the arm hole we need to bring in Douglas or Bibby.

by I know smart people on Jan 31, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

I feel like any hope as far as he's concerned is irrational

He’s proved nothing. Meanwhile the Celtics series showed just how vulnerable we are to athletic PG penetration. I’d much rather have Shump defending the point and figuring out how to cope with the lack of an offensive PG, than putting expectations on this kid who in my (admittedly very limited) estimation is a very poor defender of his position.

by east_harlem on Jan 31, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

We don't need him to be able to guard well, although that would be nice

We need a point guard with court vision who knows how to distribute the ball. We need a real point guard. When that happens, the Knicks’ shot selection will improve and the FG% will noticeably rise. The Knicks will start winning again. Is Lin that point guard? I don’t know, but I do know that no other healthy Knick is.

While I understand your sentiments...

I feel like in this league having a PG who can guard other penetrating PGs is more important than hoping that a second year journeyman will discover his inner Nash. By the way, we’re playing the Bulls this week.

by east_harlem on Jan 31, 2012 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

That's correct

I’m just concerned about Shump being replaced by Lin from PG rotation when I was so excited about his defensive prospects at that position. He was the answer to my Rondo penetrating in the playoffs nightmares (no pause, they were that scary)

by east_harlem on Jan 31, 2012 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, that's fair.

I assume that Shump would be the one assigned to guard Rondo, Westbrook, Rose et al, even if it’s a cross-match

Most Likely to Have a Career Gamer Tracker

Detroit is a team full of guys who perfectly fit the profile of a player who can accidentally destroy the Knicks for one.
Tonight’s contestants are… Ben Gordon and Greg Monroe.

Ben Gordon has a history of shaming the Knicks and Greg Monroe is a good, young rookie. Both prime choices.

Interesting fact: Contrary to popular belief, Greg Stiemsma and Greg Monroe are not twin brothers.

He's generally passing to start the game out

It’s the fourth where he stops because we’re down 6 and everyone else is chucking and missing three-pointers.

And the offensive game plan in Q4 seems to be hand melo the ball and take a seat on the other side of the court

That's the perfect play!

Melo iso’s, draws defenders, opens up shooter on the perimeter to kick it out for an open three!

We should do that every game!

To be fair, melo’s done a few of those in every game only to see TD clunk it, but never mind because if landry can hit threes with regularity we may be close to being a complete team!

here's how this quarter is going to go

They’re going to come back and take a lead of 4 with under 5 minutes left, melo’s going to come in, iso the hell out of everything and make sure we go into the half tied.

In the third we’ll take a lead, then give it all back and go into the fourth down 2

Then in the fourth everything we do will be completely useless and we’ll lose by 10

Random thought

Does anyone else secretly suspect that Baron Davis is really never going to play ball again and is using his time on the bench simply to increase his prospects in the film/television industry?

I'm just saying

Most white guys in the NBA have asymmetrical, blue-collar features, or facial hair. The only other exception is Jimmer but he’s short. This Jonas guy is a winner, pause.

Seemed like that all but came to a halt like 5 games into the season. I love seeing this team together because it assuages my fear that Amare and Melo now hate each other.

If I were to look for a negative to this night

it’d be that we got out-rebounded 35-30. But that’s probably because we shot 60% and they shot 45%.
