So let's play the Fire D'Antoni game

Yes, we're all pissed off. We'd all rather poke out our eyes than watch another performance like last night against the Bobcats. But we're going to watch the game against the Wizards. Because we're fans. Because we care about the team and want it to do well. That much I know. People here might not always see eye to eye, but we're all pulling for the Knicks.

With that being said, the Fire D'Antoni chants will start coming. The team won't find a defensive identity overnight, and they'll continue to be hard to watch for the next month or more. Slowly but surely, more and more people are going to start to get disgusted by the team's performance. Which is why I made this thread.

Star-divide

Let this thread be a place where we can do some venting and play a little game, Jigsaw style. In order for you to call for D'Antoni's head, you have to give a replacement. A coach that you think will do better with this team. And no, Phil Jackson doesn't count. A real option, a coach that could be hired next week if Grunwald gets pissed off. If you fired D'Antoni, who would you replace him with?

So the 2 questions:

1) How many games into the season should D'Antoni be given?

2) Who would you replace him with, if he was fired (available coach or assistant)?

I don't see a problem with giving him a season.

With a full season we can at least measure him up against what he was able to do last year and if we grossly under perform compared to that, his contract is up , so the matter is easily taken care of. We simply don’t re-sign him.

Having said that, I could understand it if fans got irritated if by the halfway point we were this terrible and still didn’t have a winning record but calling for drastic changes after only a weeks worth of games!?! That is madness.

He gets 30 games

If they are .500 or less, he should be a goner. Woodson would probably be the interim coach and if they made a serious run in the playoffs, maybe a token extension (2 year deal?)

I think Dolan will throw a crazy number at Phil, say $15 Million a year to come here…just to catch his attention. I think Phil would at least think about it. What a way to end a career…but then he’ll think about guys like Amare in the triangle and take a pass.

I never liked Dantoni

and think he is very overrated as a coach…“having said that” tho, he def deserves to have this whole season

You just got Tysoned!!!!!!

give him the season

this team isn’t going to win a championship this year no matter who the coach is/was. its just not going to happen.

see where the full season takes us. see if the players are still confident in the coaching. see if the coaching is still confident in the players.

next offseason

gonna be plenty of players that would absolutely be great on this team as presently constructed.

ray allen, steve nash, fuckin boris diaw, dwight howard, deron williams. i don’t understand just getting crazy over a lazy and kind of shitty start to the season. see what the team can do with a full season, and make improvements from there.

no more decimating the team (from any side). lets get continuity for once… its been like 15 years since the team has been clear about who the main guys were.

no doubt

fantasy time:

BD comes back, the knicks start to click. They play very well and make the playoffs where they make some noise.

Nash signs to play with BD (what a sick PG combo that would be). We sign another backup or two (Shump has the 2 spot on lockdown at that point) and go on to be an amazingly fun team for years to come.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

In your scenario, we've convinced Nash or BD to come off the bench?

I dunno how well they’d take that, unless they both got 24 minutes a game and whoever starts does so based on matchups, I guess. That could still be kind of tense though. I would LOVE to sign Ray Allen and have him come off the bench as sixth man (or we could start Ray and have Shump be sixth man since he can play the 2 and the 3). He would be ridiculous in D’Antoni’s offense.

by tkow on Jan 5, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

i think nash would come off the bench

for Mike D.

As long as both get about 25-30 min a game (you could, put them both out there for stretches and have an absolute insane offense).

its a fantasy though… not to worried bout the details.

I like irrationally optimistic mode

I say that there is no need for Nash, because Shump is our backup point guard. In fact, the Knicks roll with a BD/Shump/Toney rotation at the 1 and 2 Landry backs up Melo, and we go with a Chandler/Amar’e/Jorts rotation at the 4 and 5.

This is our basic eight man tight D’antoni playoff rotation. Jeffries is the guy you play when Amar’e and Chandler get into foul trouble.

Knicks get out of the first round and to game 7 of the second round. Next year, finals.

i think shump is just our starting SG

who gets all his min there a night.

in my scenario TD is gone. Sorry, he is moving further and further down my depth chart.

a 1-2 combo of BD, Nash and Shump. Landry back up melo. A 4-5 of STAT, Chandler and someone else. Maybe Jorts… but maybe someone like Diaw.

I'm probably going to say a lot of Fire D'antoni-esque things if this shit continues

especially if we lose to the wizards

but I don’t really mean it. It’s hyperbole to blow of steam.

But if things don’t turn around soon, his ass is out on the street after the season

Do the Shumpty Shump, come on and do the Shumpty Shump

Give him 30ish games

that should be plenty of time for offensive and defensive ‘chemistry’ to develop and allow baron to get acclaimated when he comes back

if that doesn’t work id say welcome jeff van gundy back to our franchise. (however i would prefer a no bs coach like nate mcmillan/scott skiles lets hope he gets fired) however jeff is a no nonsense high coaching IQ guy that would make all of our pieces work effectively…Look what he did with houston & sprewell imagine what he could do with two all world scorers and a defensive lynchpin….i think this would actually be the perfect move….

then we welcome steve nash and grant hill next year, and run shit

im not hopeless anymore i just dont know how to change my name

you remember how JVG

just up and left the team right?

I dont get why people want him back.

Let's end this...

….Fire Dan and hire Mo Cheeks

I'd love to just hire Mo Cheeks as it is

this team could use more Cheeks anyway

Dig..

This team needs a class act that they’ll listen too. It’s obvious that this team isn’t motivated by this coach

I didn't mean as head coach

Phil Jackson couldn’t get this team to win, there’s no fucking talent here. I mean hire Cheeks just to hire someone named Cheeks. And to have Mo of them? Yeap

Why firing D'Antoni in season means raising the white flag and saying we give up.

Caoches install systems and teams work to implement them. If the team is not playing well and you fire the coach mid season, you cannot bring in an outside coach in mid year because that coach would have to run D’antoni’s system, especially in a season like this where there is very little actual practice time. So bringing in a Jerry Sloan or even Phil Jackson would do nothing this season because he couldn’t install his system. That means you are stuck with Mike Woodson probably coaching the team and if he is part of the failed regime the chances that he turns things around, when he is part of the failed coaching staff is unlikely.
Secondly hiring outside coaches in mid-season is difficult because they want their own guys to be assistants. Bringing in Jerry Sloan for example or Mo Cheeks with D’Antoni’s assistants probably doesn’t work well.

So While D’Antoni could be let go after the season firing him in season, if the goal is to improve the play this year is a big fail. Also remember teams fire coaches because you can’t fire 15 players but the reality is when a team plays poorly it is the players not the coach that is 95% of the problem.

fire him asap

at this point i just want mike d fire

by knicksgiantsmets on Jan 15, 2012 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Anyone who wants to fire D’Antoni doesnt understand his system and what kind of players it takes to be successful…

His PnR O is the best system in basketball…but it requires 3 guys who shoot over 40% from beyond the arc

Donnie Walsh was a very overrated GM, He could have brought in guys for Mike Ds system without selling out for Melo & Amare, but now that its here, lets give it time to gel
