Carmelo Anthony is day-to-day with a sprained left ankle.

Bruce Bennett

He turned the ankle on a hard foul in the third quarter.

After the Knicks somewhat easily dispatched the Lakers, the main thing on our minds right now is the health of Carmelo Anthony. After an outstanding 23 minutes, Melo bent his leg in ways it's not supposed to be bent when Dwight Howard fouled him hard on a baseline drive. After trying to play through some pain, Melo pulled himself from the game and retreated to the locker room. The in-game report was a sprained left ankle, and here's what we've got now, via Adam Zagoria:

"Right now it's just day to day, it's a slight sprain." -- Woodson on Melo

Glen Grunwald, in a rare conversation with reporters, also said he didn't think the injury was serious. As was said during the game, better an ankle than a knee. Better mild than severe, too. As always, one can't trust a "day-to-day" prognosis from the Knicks until the player-patient actually returns with all his limbs intact, but this is relatively good news. New York's next game is on Saturday at home against the Cavaliers.

In closing: You're kind of a dick, Dwight Howard.

Update: A little more from Melo himself, via Frank Isola:

Carmelo, limping, says his left ankle and left knee are both sore.

Carmelo, speaking with a small group of reporters, says he is not sure if he'll play Saturday vs Cavs.
