Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Will Melo's Return Make the Knicks Worse?

Since Jeremy Lin began starting, we've been seeing a wider distribution in scoring from the Knicks than before. The bench has been more productive, and the team has been winning. All of this has been happening without Carmelo Anthony.

When Carmelo returns from injury, will we be seeing “Melo's offense” again? Or, will Melo take on the Tim Thomas role that we saw in Phoenix and be another contributor to a Lin-led offense (You've probably been hearing about the comparisons between Lin and Steve Nash)? Or, will Melo's return require a few adjustments from him and Lin to utilize their abilities to the fullest, resulting in a well-oiled machine of a team? Another possibility when Melo comes back is that all things could go fine. Also, despite a very impressive 4 starts from Lin, there's the possibility that his magical run won't last, and Melo would lead the offense again. I'm sure there are more possibilities. It's hard to tell what will happen with the Knicks right now. After all, it's a time of Linsanity (I had to throw that in there)!

If Lin suddenly looses his juice right after Melo arrives.......

It will not be a coincidence….

If Melo wants wins over personal glory then he will adjust(for a while anyway untill he tires of Lin taking the spotlight) interesting as it may expose Melo’s true reason for coming to NY….to win as he says or to be “the man” in the “big market”. Rec’d for posting what many are wondering about!

It will only get better.

Lin/Tyson PnR will become THE staple of the offense. And you can’t leave Stat or Melo to come over and help out. Lin is going to rachet shit up to an even higher level.

Then you stagger Tyson and Amare’s rest so that at least one of them is always out there, and u just crush fools. Baron subs in for Lin. Melo can catch and shoot or take over at the end of clocks. Novak subs in for Amare and snipes from the corner.

This is about to get seriously good.

And u couldn’t have timed his emergence better. He came into a situation where all he had to worry about was PnRing with Tyson. No Stat. No Melo. He didn’t have to try to figure out how to get them involved. Now that he’s established, and winning, they have to augment their games to HIM.

I can’t help but wonder if things would have played this way if he had both of those mouths to feed. They probably wouldve been less likely to aquiesce to him if they were there when he was given a shot. And he probably wouldn’t have had the confidence or the opportunity to assert himself. But now, its all about Lin and the big dogs are under tremendous pressure to not eff this up.

couldnt melo play something like the Marion role in the offense?

i feel like all those times the ball got kicked out to walker, in the future it will be melo. And thats a nice trade off.

Mike D is going to be able to expand his offense. WIth both Ty and STAT being P&R partners, he can do multiple screen and rolls during a play. Having a pg that is both able and willing to let the play develop is key, and it seems as though we have that. Some of those lucky bounces and high shooting % will not drop and drop (respectively), but the understanding of passing lanes and the playbook will only grow. and when a team does defend it right, all of a sudden.. there is melo with the ball and probably open at the wind ready to attack.

I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."

by gbaked on Feb 11, 2012 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

to this, i say...

given lin, fields, anthony, stat, chandler are in the game….

after a made basket, chandler inbounds to lin, fields, anthony and soutdemire break. lin catches up, dribble handle off with melo or fields, goes right back to lin leads directly into a screen and roll with stat.

if that doesn’t generate a shot, kickout to fields or melo.

if that doesn’t generate a shot, swing to melo, chandler now in the offense initiates a screen and roll….

rinse and fucking repeat. pick and roll on the weak side, space it out, shoot the open shot. fuck hoes up. i’ve been trying to say this is what will happen once baron davis is healthy. but lin can get that done. and will get that done.

d’antoni’s offensive scheme that every new yorker with a heart full of rage and garbage routinely chastises relies heavily on players read and react skills. fields is basically the only one that can do it out of position. eveyrbody else has been out of position, and on our best of days, only made due. i dunno man. shits about to pop off if you ask me.

How about this

Lin runs the pick and roll with Amar’e while Chandler stays in the midrange. He can then run screens for Carmelo on the perimeter/ midrange, and/or roam in unaccounted for for offensive rebounds and putbacks.

How about this: With Lin and Amar’e clicking and Tyson gobbling up o-bounds, teams will be forced to play their best defensive bigs, and thus their team will be easier to handle on the offensive end.

How about this: With Lin, Tyson, and Amar’e to account for in the paint, and Carmelo on the perimeter and in the midrange, teams are going to have to stay home and there will be less leaking out. It will be easier for our guys to get back on D.

It’s just all good stuff. There may be some spacing issues to work out, particularly with Amar’e and Tyson. When they are both in the game, watch out for Amar’e’s three point shooting. Seriously!

I think it will be the opposite of this
Lin runs the pick and roll with Amar’e while Chandler stays in the midrange.

Lin and Chandler run the pick and roll while Amar’e gets all the wide-open 15-foot jumpers he can handle. When Chandler sits, STAT goes to work as the dive man. Tyson Chandler is not that useful in the midrange except as a screen-setter.

I think Amare will play fine with Lin. I have some doubts about Melo taking a diminished role in a Lin-centered offense. I think Melo is willing to make adjustments, but I don’t know how it will all come together in the end. He’s made some progress, but Carmelo has a great opportunity here to prove that he’s a team player.

well the thing is, it wont be lin centered.

it would be what it was if baron was their, giving the PG the ball and having him find the open man.
melo ran this for a good part of the season and i think he will be delighted to allow an actual PG take that over and move back to his natural position where he can just score at will.
this is a team centered offense now that we have a PG.

What Diminished role?

This is Carmelo Anthony we are talking about. He is still going to get his 20 shots a game folks. If for no other reason than D’Antoni wants Carmelo to take 20 shots a game. The difference is with an actual point guard to run the offense, Melo’s shot attempts will come in the form of something other than 20 Iso’s. Let us not get this twisted Carmelo Anthony is not getting his role diminished or his minutes cut when he comes back in. He will still get his shots and he will still have plays run for him. The only difference is Carmelo will be a part of the offense, instead of trying to be the offense.

It won't make the team worse as long as Lin still runs the offense

Melo can just become like..the league’s best catch and shoot player and we’ll be good to go. He’ll be like Jason Richardson in Phoenix except with a post-up game and some iso opportunities when Lin is off the court.

No way

And to be honest, I think anyone who makes the assertion has an irrational hatred of Melo. Good point guards only get better with more talented offensive players that they can set up. And teams won’t be able to collapse on Lin like the Lakers did with the pure firepower of Melo/Amar’e on the floor. His job will become much easier.

Nah, i think there will be a time of adjustment but overall no.

Melo will take Walker’s shots and some of shump’s and he is a better shooter than them. Melo is seeing what Lin is doing during the game and when’s back he’ll understand the offensive plan. When defenses key in on lin he won’t be able to have that much space to work with. But Once melo is back there is no way a team can key in on Lin and ignore melo at the same time. Melo’s presence alone can open up the offense more for Lin to work with. And with Lin creating shots for melo, he won’t have to try and create himself as much. Also his isoing can be picked for particular moments, like yesterday with the rest of his team sucking, we saw Kobe will his team back, which melo can do once in a while. Lin’s points per game might drop, but having Melo and Amare will up his assists total.

by lololol on Feb 11, 2012 2:48 PM EST reply actions

All about the ego

It all depends on Carmelo’s ego. Can he handle not being “the man,” the Knicks not being “his team”?

If he can accept it, the Knicks become very hard to beat. Two powerful inside players, a great outside shooter (Anthony) and another good one (Fields), together with an orchestrating point guard who can score inside and outside … how do you defend that?

If he doesn’t accept it (and it does seem to go against the natural grain of his personality) … that’s a problem.

And if it does become a problem, only the fans at the Garden could solve it. D’Antoni ultimately has no control over Anthony, none of his teammates does either.

But a thunderous chorus of boos raining down on all sides every time he touches the ball … tough love from his constituency … that would change him.

Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. But if it does … after this taste of basketball played the right way… I know the Garden just would not put up with it …

Therein, I think

Is the difference between Melo and LeBron. I’ve seen the Knicks take advantage of LeBron asserting himself after an insane run of points by Wade, cutting off the momentum and allowing the Knicks to take the game.

Melo may do that by accident a couple of times but I don’t think that kind of behavior, the need to show he’s ‘the greatest’ is that much a part of his personality.

Plus, the Knicks have Lin controlling the ball and controlling the action, he’s clearly in command out there and makes the right basketball decisions – the coach feels that way and the players all feel that way. Carmelo will be on board. The only way shit gets weird is if he’s not scoring and the Knicks also aren’t winning.

Melo wants to win, ya’ll. He’s a great one on one player but he’s also a good passer and a good rebounder. He’s a player. He wants to be part of this.

by bucketsncents on Feb 11, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

*groans*
something Melo is NOT known for.

The only reason Melo isn’t known for his “chemistry” is because as soon as Denver found out he was no longer happy there, they wanted to tear apart the guy’s rep and shit on him.

Denver certainly had no “chemistry” issues with him before they found out he was not re-signing. So where did these chemistry issues come from really?

It’s all bull shit and spin. Does he take lots of shots…sure, but if that’s how the offense is designed and the whole team understands that there is no issue. Fans are gonna love it when they go down and hate it when they miss, but let’s not mistake Denver’s previous bitterness as fact. Our team had problems because Anthony had to pick up the slack because no one else was would and they seemed to settle for Anthony doing his thing. I’m not going to say Melo had no responsibility or that he always made the right choices because frankly he didn’t. But to hang that ugly albatross of losses on him solely is ridiculous, simply because no one else would step the fuck up (amongst many, many, many other reasons.)

Wasn’t Melo’s chemistry just fine on the olympic squad? Very talented players sometimes have trouble dealing with players that are less talented, especially during tough times. I think Melo’s a guy like that, but he’s not a point guard, the Knicks have a good one, and the rest of the team and the coach support Lin’s playmaking. Defense is not Melo’s forte, but the defensive culture of the team is fine. Besides, he’s at least as good a defender as Bully and Novak.

unlike walker, he’s not willing to pick up fouls, but he plays alright team defense. he at least knows what he’s doing.

I REALLY question whether stoudemire is an improvement over jeffries. jeffries is a much, much better defender and brings more intangibles. amar’e brings shooting and better conversion of pick and roll play because he’s a better finisher and a better free throw shooter, but that’s it.

i don’t see how anyone can question whether stat is an improvement over jeffries if they’ve actually seen stat in full flow. i know you predominantly watched denver before the trade, so i’m not meaning to get at you, but that seems a quite odd statement.

also i have to say i don’t think it’s because walker is willing to pick up fouls, so much as he actually can’t play without fouling a lot of the time. he does it on offense, he does it on defense, and he probably fouls team-mates when he’s on the bench!

by patrickm23 on Feb 12, 2012 7:50 AM EST up reply actions

I am not a nuggets fan; I am a knicks fan

I actually really dislike george karl and kenyon martin. Melo has always been one of my favorite non-knicks, but I watched nearly every pre-trade knicks games last year and maybe 5 nuggets games. that streak of 30 point games was impressive, but we were a different team. he played center with four shooters, that gave him spacing and favorable match-ups which he might not get this year

my problem with amar’e is his defense. teams run pick and rolls at him because he gets confused. bulls blatantly did that during our last games. that’s how hansborough went off for 30 point twice in a row against us last year. darrell arthur lit us up too doing that. it’s a huge problem. plus his all-around team defense is just bad.

and jeffries to me is a net positive on offense . . . never plays outside his means, decent at finishing pick and rolls, moves the ball, hustles for rebounds, sets screens. amar’e should be more than a net positive, but when he forces the issue and tries to score over packed paints, he is not. plus his jumper’s been shaky this year

Because LeBron is not the best crunch time player, and since that team doesn’t have a clear floor leader point guard, he ends up controlling the action in the end of the game.

By contrast, the Mavs had Kidd, the guy knows how to put his team into position to win down the stretch. I would say that was the difference in an otherwise close series. The Heat added a guy in Norris Cole that they hoped might help with that.

To me, the BEST thing about Lin is that he is fearless and ballsy and leaderly down the stretch.

as much as i hate them, they are winning.

the only problem is the only guy they have that is clutch is Wade, and teams can just double him, cause lebron basically is the worst player in the league when it comes to winning games in the 4th.
the knicks have 2 guys, Stat and melo. both very good in the clutch and melo the best in the league for some time at it

Yeah but

most importantly, the Knicks now have a floor general that will make good decisions down the stretch and set those guys up.

That gives them an advantage over the Heat.

add JR Smith to the mix in the back court. and this is championship bpund,
just imagine, a roster with the first 7 guys being tyson, stat, melo, lin, fields, shump, and JR. then u have novak and jeffries on the bench and BOOM championship

if carmelo is a ball stopper and gives lackadaisical effort on defense, he will hurt us

otherwise he is gold to have on the wing. he can isolate at the end of the shot clock and if he has marquis daniels’ 80 pound self guarding him or something.

Seriously, people need to stop

Getting a superstar back does not make a team worse ever ever ever. The Knicks have to adjust to fit everybody into the offense.

We’ll be scoring 150+ points so defense won’t matter :p

Chandler > Howard

Did you see the shit that Howard was saying after the Magic won? He was complaining that he didn’t get the ball down the stretch and that he needs to if he is going to become a ‘closer’ blah blah blah. After a WIN.

Dude, learn to hit some foul shots.

Really – red flag. Chandler’s a great defender, a very good rebounder, and a great finisher around the basket. And a decent foul shooter. And a great teammate. And he has a championship to show for it.

Say what you want about Melo – I don’t see him complaining about not getting the ball in the end of the game if the Knicks win the game.

of course we'll be worse.

what type of question is this??? we’re bound to lose at least one game from now till the end of the season.

by semsemma on Feb 12, 2012 7:57 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Are you guys nuts?

how can the Knicks get worse when Melo comes back? Melo has been playing out of position all year long doing this facillitator crap D’antoni has him doing. He’s played with Chauncey, Allen Iverson, Andre Miller at pg and on Team USA Now all of a sudden this year he’s a clog? Do you guys seriously think we got a shot at the Bulls, Heat, Celts, Pacers or even The Hawks w/o Melo? Look I like Lin but to blame Melo for the team’s lack of offense is ridiculous. I think the recent success is because we now actually have a point guard. Personally i think when Amare and Melo come back full force the Knicks will be really really Good.

by mightykingcrayo on Feb 13, 2012 12:14 AM EST reply actions

not saying they will be worse...

but the same reason the Nuggets got better without his stardom, is the same reason we could, theoretically, get worse upon his return. Sometimes chemistry trumps talent.

by bucketsncents on Feb 13, 2012 6:42 AM EST up reply actions

Why?

If Lin is the ballhandler and Melo is relegated to be a scoring machine with no pg duties This team should do perfectly fine offensively. Like many others said we’re talking a Melo for Walker lineup change. Are we even arguing? The problems would come if Fields regresses to his shy uneffective play, the team begins to rely again on Melo like he’s god, Melo goes 1 on 4 thinking he’s god.
If the Knicks continue to play unselfish, with Melo doing some isos and more catch and shooting, then the sky is the limit. I mean, we won FIVE in a row playing our BENCH. The only thing it takes is sharing the ball and playing like you’re no better than your team mates.
My question is: will our D get worse?
Melo can’t be worse than Walker, but Stat is certainly worse that Jeffries on D.

by Alessandro Bozzi on Feb 13, 2012 10:14 AM EST reply actions

Andre Miller is a pass first point guard who Melo played with from 04 to 07 and the Nuggets were pretty damned good each of those seasons...

making the playoffs each of those seasons, and even finishing first in the west the 2005-06 season.

No chemistry issues.

They were invented once Melo decided he wanted to come to NY.

Annnnnnnd even if there were issues(which I still think is bullshit), it sure seemed like they still managed to be professionals and do their jobs well enough to be successful.
