Game Thread: Knicks at Timberwolves- 2/11/12

New York Knicks at Minnesota Timberwolves, Feb 11, 2012 8:00 PM EST

Evening, pantaloons! Fresh off their monumental win over the Lakers, the Knicks are in Minnesota tonight to take on the Timberwolves. After the events of the last week, this is now billed as a battle between the league's two cuddliest point guards. Ricky Rubio and Jeremy Lin will face off in what promises to be a very exciting match-up, and the short-handed frontcourt will also have Kevin Love to handle around the floor and on the glass. The T-Wolves, by the way, have lost two straight games (including a home loss last night to the Mavericks) after winning three straight at the beginning of the month.

This thread is hungry for your comments during the game. Canis Hoopus-- perhaps my favorite SB Nation blog-- is a great place to visit for Minnesota coverage. As always, please refrain from posting photos, .gifs, illegal streams, and links to claymation snuff films in the game thread. Get 'em, Knicks!

What are our expectations tonight?

I’m kind of leaning towards a win, but I could see us coming out tired and flat.

My expectations are not high.

They’ve got to be exhausted after the emotional surge of last night. But if anyone can stay focused and keep us playing with discipline and energy, it’s Jeremy Lin. (If you’d told me a week ago that I was going to type that sentence, I’d have told you to stop trolling my trolling.)

by Joamiq on Feb 11, 2012 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think at any point this season

If you told me Jeremy Lin would drop 38 on the Lakers and win at MSG with Melo and Amar’e out, I’d probably slap you in the face. Hell, even going into that game last night I was super nervous for Lin!

Here's how the Disney movie ends

Lin fouls out, and Toney takes over and wins the game – and gets his confidence back. The two go on to lead the Knicks to the championship as a sweet ass backcourt tandem. Fade to the All-Star game next year!

literally only two things we need to improve

interior defense and turnovers

No doubt in my mind that if we improve those two things we’ll win this game

by Edelorbe on Feb 11, 2012 9:09 PM EST reply actions

Need to capitalize on their turnovers also

You'd think Lin would get people to come to this blog...

… and fair enough, he got me to watch the game, but I came here to say something else:

These refs really make some ABYSMAL calls.

The standard of refereeing in the NBA is atrocious.

It gets ignored because each individual mistake only results in a 2-3 point swing here and there, but they build up to make results fairly arbitrary a lot of the time.

by Joamiq on Feb 11, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Meanwhile, they can easily cause a 6-point swing.

Totally agree though.

The positive here is that before last week no one would have expected this team to be able to even be competitive without Amar’e and Melo, and the players are all very tired. But that doesn’t mitigate feelings much when they could very easily be ahead if not for the mounting mistakes and missed free throws.

Leaving out the important 6 or so turnovers and plenty of bad misses in the 2nd half, but I feel you

by paxon on Feb 11, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He definitely struggled… but he executed just barely well enough.

Have to give a tip of the hat to Rubio for his defensive job on Lin tonight.

by Joamiq on Feb 11, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Not saying he didn't hit some rough spots, but that's a pretty damn good stat line

We didn’t have a point guard before this and we don’t win without Lin doing what he’s got to do.

He’s not gonna be perfect every night, but if this is him not playing well, I’m a pretty happy fan

If Stat and Melo are in this game he’s not taking all those shots in the second half.

I kind of like that Melo and Amar’e will return separately. Gives them a chance to fit Amar’e in with what they’re doing and get some games before they do the same w/ Melo

by paxon on Feb 11, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I think Amar’e will fit in nicely and mesh, then it’ll just be about getting Melo into it

Shump was key this game for sure, despite some bonehead plays. And Novak’s been a revelation lately. Novak should continue to fit in well when the team is 100% because there will be even more space (assuming the offense retains its flow).

by paxon on Feb 11, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

Indeed. Shump was really impressive.

Truth be told Lin had an off game. The fact that an off game is 20 points and 8 assists (6 to) is awesome. Can’t forget about Novak (who should take Walker’s minutes at this point) and Fields/Shump balling out, Shump in particularly. I think he’s starting to find his game as he learns his role.

partially

we’re learning to play as a team.

But once melo comes back we’ll be much, much better.

With Melo I think he takes over the game down the stretch and we win with a comfortable lead

As long as you bow out to my Celts in the playoffs again, that's just fine ;)

But seriously, I hope it’ll work out that way for yous. I like the ball club, it’s a good city, and you deserve some spotlight again. You seem to have a bunch of pieces, and perhaps now some glue.

Who knows, maybe D’Antoni might actually turn out decent too.

I know.

It’s a blessing in disguise in that it made these other guys step up and get confidence, assuming that’s how you mean it. The team is clearly better with Melo, though. They missed him and Amar’e big time tonight, especially Melo down the stretch.

Nah - anyone sitting on the bench watching the gut check and effort from this team

is a completely vege if they don’t get on board…I think Melo really gets a bad rap around here…Sure his Iso’s are grueling at times, but he’ll be having a quicker open shots when he comes back. We’ll be able to attack teams from all angles. We deadly

Conspiracy Theory here

Some time last night Lin had:
6 Rebounds
6 Assists
6 Turnovers

Also known as to many of us, the number of the Beast.
Did some more research into it and in the Book of Revelation it states: The first beast comes comes out of the Sea by the power of the Dragon.
Lin emerged from the D-League from the Erie Bayhawks also close to Lake Erie
This is the year of the Dragon
