Postgame Thread: Knicks 100, Timberwolves 98

Not really sure how they managed to steal that one, but we'll take it! Much needed rest coming up.

Toughest games = 2nd of back-to-back that's 1/2-country away

Guys get to sleep at about 5am, and this time it was after a very, very tough game with the Lakers. That’s why this was the most impressive win so far. Pretty amazing how this TEAM — not just Lin — has changed. Contenders, for sure.

And wait, they’re still down 2 stars, forced to go to the likes of Walker. At full strength, they’re gonna be awesome.

by JR99 on Feb 11, 2012 10:33 PM EST reply actions

Three things

1.) Even if we had lost, I still decided before love’s shot that this is much better than if they’d gotten blown out, because pre-Lin they would’ve been killed tonight.

2.) Is that the first time D’Antoni’s post timeout play has ever worked?

3.) Where does Novak fit in when Melo and Amar’e come back, hopefully he takes Walker’s minutes.

Outside of Walker and Bibby (and for now, we must assume TD), this team’s secondary/role/bench players have really been emerging.

Novak, for instance, should still be an important bench option once the team is healthy because guys like Melo and Amar’e should open up even more space for him.

Landry’s been playing a lot better lately. His shot’s still questionable but his D’s been good and he’s been good with the ball on the floor.

Shump’s just a blast to watch and has had some key late-game heroics during this streak.

The best thing about Lin is we know he can take over on offense by himself, but we also know that he’s rarely going to have to. So long as he can learn when to do that and when not to, this team will be in great shape when healthy.

by paxon on Feb 11, 2012 10:44 PM EST reply actions

What I like about these guys is the lack of fear

Novak trying to post up? Lin “He can’t shoot” then boom is hitting clutch shots. Chan trying to get a midrange game going. The effort and way they back each other up is priceless.

Probably the worst game of this stretch for Lin

and he still finished with a good 20/6/8/3 line.

Looked decent the first half – some forced bounce passes, but overall, solid.

2nd half, he just seemed dead. Didn’t have his legs. He probably needed a break there, but you know what – this is good experience for him to get worn down like that. Another back to back coming up on Tues/Wed. Hopefully, he’ll be a bit more aware on his own fatigue level, and if not, the coaches need to be aware. He probably was a tad over-aggressive at times in the 2nd half, when he looked beat, and tried some shots that, if you don’t have legs, are hard to make (one on the right side, a fadeaway banker attempt).

That said, great gutty effort by the Knicks. They really shouldn’t have won at all – the Wolves size was too much inside, and Lin was hounded and pounded. Give Rubio credit – I really didn’t think that he had that much D in him, but Rubio/Ridnour hounded Lin.

Two side notes – good thing the Knicks won. Otherwise that idiotic technical decision in the 3rd that gave the Wolves the ball when it should’ve been the Knicks would’ve been an issue.

Also, nice to see Jeffries give Lin a big hug at the end of the game. It seemed like the team knew he was dead (a lot of good D, but I half wonder if his fatigue was a reason why mid-3rd to mid-4th, they had others bring the ball up a fair amount). Also, Lin sure has pumped up Jeffries in all his interviews.

by toonsterwu on Feb 11, 2012 10:49 PM EST reply actions

also could be mistaken

but I think this was the first game where a team was aggressively jumping Lin and double-teaming him off the pick a bit more. At least, it felt like that, and watching the game, I wondered if that was why Lin wasn’t attempting a few more high passes to Chandler.

I think the great thing about the timeline for the guys out

is that it should space fairly well, so they aren’t trying to integrate 2-3 guys at once. Amare’s back next week, and Melo the week after, right? Not sure when Harrellson/Davis are coming back, but at least you have time to work in Amare and then adjusting for Melo.

Having Amare back, and then Harrellson, will help this squad a lot in matching up with size. I mean, I’m still surprised at how ineffective Bynum/Gasol were yesterday (and especially comapred to how Pekovic/Love did today).

In this new Liniverse, there’s more space for him to drive. When he plays alongside Lin, we can go to this (ahem) dual penetration attack that is hella dangerous.

Everyone was waiting him for him to be the savior. With things changed-

1. He’ll be alright, no pressure on him, he can play the sport he loves and try to help the team

2. He’ll be slightly resentful, and play his heart out trying to compete and show he’s still an elite point guard

3. He’ll suck and it wont matter

No question about it... absolutely no

It’s not just a basketball question anymore — though even there, Lin has BY FAR the better upside. But even if there WERE a basketball reason to trade — which there is not — they will NEVER trade Lin now… for marketing reasons. He’s a gold mine, and they know it. Worth 10x Nash, without much exaggeration.

I’ve recently decided to shut off ESPN entirely. Deleted all ESPN bookmarks, found other places, like SI, to get my sports news and analysis from. And taking notes on what good basketball looks like. I know the schedule has been weak the last 10 days, but it’s obviously no coincidence that when he sits, the knicks start moving the ball, making shots, and giving effort on the defensive end.

With ‘melo, what’s our record in the last 6 games? 3-3? Worse?

by tulls200 on Feb 11, 2012 11:07 PM EST reply actions

Are you kidding

Melo is not a PG. I hope you’re taking notes on that. Because everybody acknowledged it at the beginning of the season. This is how basketball played with an outstanding PG looks. Now go take your juvenile Melo hate out of a celebration thread, yeah?

by erniesto on Feb 11, 2012 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Trust me I'm celebrating as much as anyone

But I don’t think it’s JUST the fact that Lin is playing that’s all of the sudden woken up Chandler and Fields and made EVERYONE look better on the defensive end. I think it’s a combination of Lin being out there and Melo not being out there.

by tulls200 on Feb 11, 2012 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

Man, can you just take it down a notch please?

I totally respect your opinions on Melo but let’s keep things happy around here as much as we can.

by Joamiq on Feb 11, 2012 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

Melo can't make other players look better the way Lin can

because HE IS NOT A POINT GUARD.

He is one of the best scorers in the NBA. He’s not LeBron James. Although he’s a skilled passer, and I expect him to keep up with the oops, playing the “point forward” role does not suit his skill set. He struggled a lot because of it.

He will play much better with LIN

by DonMoosavi on Feb 11, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Right.

People tend to forget that Melo is just a younger taller Kobe

by erniesto on Feb 11, 2012 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

a better team playa that kobe

i found Kobe’s play last night irritating. I know he made those wacky shots but I found his ball hogging much worse than what Melo does

by DonMoosavi on Feb 11, 2012 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

Although

Melo actually often does lift his teammates’ play. Someone did a study on this around the time of the trade. Contrary to popular opinion, his teammates’ efficiencies go up when they play with him, probably because of the attention he demands from defenses.

He should be fine with Lin. He has had some issues this season stopping the ball on offense, but I don’t think it’s going to take long for him to get better at picking his iso spots. He certainly seems to be paying attention to what’s happening right now.

by Joamiq on Feb 11, 2012 11:19 PM EST up reply actions

I guess that study isn't that surprising

But I would like to see what the overall TEAM efficiency is with/without him (does the article have it?)

Obviously I am not the biggest ‘melo fan in the world (maybe that’s an understatement), but I am certainly interested to see what happens when he should now start getting some decent looks.

The problem is, it’s a zero-sum game. Melo’s 25 shots are subtracted from everyone else – and I hope to god the looks that get subtracted are Bill Walker’s garbage jumpers, and not the in-rhythm stuff we’ve been seeing from Novak or the rolls to the basket we’ve been getting from Chandler.

by tulls200 on Feb 11, 2012 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Good points

I think the study had issues getting team efficiency numbers because the lineups without him didn’t play enough minutes for their numbers to have significance. It’s something to keep an eye on going forward though. I’m not the biggest Melo fan, but I still have a lot of faith in this team learning how to operate efficiently with him.

by Joamiq on Feb 12, 2012 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

lots of love for lin

hopefully Lin can be a DMZ here as normally the name I use draws some immediate hate on this board. I’ve been keeping tabs on Lin’s progression out of Harvard and am ecstatic that he’s taken off with the Knicks. Awesome way to gut it out and come away with the W tonight (by the whole team).

Quick thought on Melo & Lin dynamic. When Chauncy came back to the Nuggets, he garnered a lot of local love and attention, and clearly the team took to his leadership on the floor. Melo and CB had sort of a compromise in the overall play in that CB was still the floor general, but sometimes Melo kept it in his hands and did his thing. I think as long as Lin still asserts himself, Melo will play teamball. He may be sticky at times, but that’s the trade off for having a clutch shooter like him on your team.

Congrats tonight and good luck on the season. Looking forward to seeing Lin & Stat on Tues (hopefully).
