WHY?... Have we won the last 5 games?
Amidst the absolute raucous, unadulterated, well-deserved joy of this past week... Knick fans across the land are carrying with them, some silently, and some out loud, a genuine anxiety regarding the return of our max contracts.
To quell this anxiety, obviously only one thing can happen... we have to play a game with our full roster.
However, I think each of our personal beliefs as to how we'll perform once Melo returns (and to a lesser degree Stat), depends on your belief around WHY we have won these 5 in a row.
For those who think we have won more because of the basketball skills that Lin has brought to the court (ball handling, vision, quickness, shooting) are more likely to think that there won't be an adjustment once Melo returns. It seems the belief is that with the ball in Lin's hands, Melo skills will be maximized and the offensive and defensive efficiency will only improve.
For those who think we have won more because of the intangibles that Lin has brought to the team (unselfishness, leadership, determination, brotherhood, trust, resiliency and good ol' fashion badassness) are more likely to think that Melo's return may be to the detriment of offensive and defensive efficiency.
Obviously, as with any great debate, the answer usually falls somewhere in between, but as we all wait with baited breath, the return of Melo, it is most definitely an interesting element of basketball to reflect upon.
Personally, what I've enjoyed most these past 5 glorious games, is the unity of this team... yes, I love that the unity has led to wins and Lin most definitely has a base of skills that has maximized the skills of the very same players whose skills we so often doubted earlier in the year... but it's the WAY the guys are playing WITH and FOR each other that has been absolutely inspiring... and it's these byproducts of Lin's presence that I fear will be compromised by Melo's return. Not by intention because I don't doubt for one second that Melo doesn't want to win, but simply because he is a very different ingredient, and sometimes, certain ingredients just don't taste as good with certain others.
So which way do you lean? Why do you think we've won these last 5 games? What are your philosophies of winning?
Chemistry?
Or Talent?
Name on the back of the jersey?
Or name on the front of the jersey?
Where do you all fall?

Its all about Lin now. The team is Linning and Winning.
When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. And dragons don’t burn. So Melo will have to conform or sit, because as long as we’re winning MDA has all the power. And I think he will.
This thing is bigger than Melo, or any individual, right now. This thing is a new basketball religion. And Lin is the prophet. You don’t get in the way of a run-away train. You hop on, or you get the fuck out of the way.
If MDA is smart, he’ll reincorporate Stat first. He has already proven he can thrive in this system and it will be a breath of fresh air for him. Might even be a good idea to get Baron some reps in before bringing Melo back. Get the system set and solidified with both the first and second units, and THEN bring back Melo. That way there’s a clear identity and established rhythm of the offense for Melo to augment his game to fit to. But this will be a good thing. These guys will be giddy with all the open looks they get.
Both Stat and Melo have had to face defenses that are designed to stop them. And with the iso’s, when you know they’re coming, its easier to defend them. But now with Lin, defenses will have to expend so much of their energy to stopping the PnR and his penetration, and those two will get wide open looks. They’ll have to rotate off our two stars to help out against the PnR, and then over-rotate to help the helper. Think of the panicthat will be created when a guy realizes that Stat/Melo was left alone to help out on the PnR. They’re gonna blitz to go help, and as long as the ball moves there will be wide open shots and/or driving lanes. And if it doesn’t work initially, you kick it out and reset. You can’t set a defense to stop our line-up. Lin doesn’t even have to score, all he’s gotta do is keep penetrating. This is gonna be sick.

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
there's no way to add new players
and not have adjustments to make.
but when new players come in to the fold- how quickly they adjust is the real barometer.
if bill walker, bless his heart, doesn’t get to shootbecause his shots go to carmelo anthony, and likewise, jared jeffries’ shotsgo to stoudemire, this team will start to score in hailstorms.
consider that jeffries shots tend to miss, altho somehow he’s been shooting well this year. but other times jeffries doesn’t shoot and pulls it out, then hands it off to fields, lin et al. that takes another ten seconds off the clock to re-establish an attack. if its just stoudemire getting those in rhythm jumpers at the top of the key, we’re gonna get some automatic points, and its going to create more possessions per game.
then there’s bill walker, similar to jeffries the guy is a liability when trying to score. not nearly as egregious as jeffries, but i’d actually argue that jeffries makes more things work on offense. but anyway- bill walker is not as good of a shooter or creator as carmelo anthony. and when the initial pick and roll doesn’t get a layup or dunk, it will get kicked out either directly to an open anthony or anthony will be one pass away. and it will be devastating.
but the simple fact remains. toney douglas was stopping his dribble 30 feet from the hoop every time. shumpert was stopping his dribble 15 feet from the hoop every time and lin never gives up his dribble. so much of our action comes off the pick and roll play, if you have to make your scoring wing, the pick and roll ball handler, you are out a scoring wing. and sure, melo and chandler p&r’s payed dividends, but you need melo and stoudemire to get the ball of action going to the rim.
anyway, the team will be fine. its no use to condemn them after a bad game or three, and its silly to laud them as the eventual champion if they win a game or three.
the team has won the last five because the chemistry is there. the talent is missing. baron and melo are hurt. amar’e is contending with life’s greater issues. but the team will rally around the players and help them through their struggles.
in summation, the coach has fostered a horrible community of ingrates, who don’t like being around one another and don’t do what they’re told because theywant to win the game by themselves and leave their teammates out in the cold, therefore we should fire the entire coaching staff, minus kenny atkinson.

undoubtedly
chemistry wins in basketball. Sure you can have all the talent in the world, but if that talent doesn’t have chemistry it will fail.
I think Mare and Carmelo will fit in, for some reason I do. Amar’e is easy to figure out, he’ll fit. To me the only thing with Mare is if his mind is right. I wouldn’t blame him if it isn’t.
Carmelo’s watching this. He knows what he needs to do. And I think he will. He did his shit in the past cuz he had to. Or at least he felt he had to. But now we have a guy that can poke and prod the defense and get guys good looks. He can create. He’s smart with the rock. He can do his own thing if he needs to.
I think Lin’s for real and I think he’s the poor man’s Steven Nash we’ve basically always needed here. Felton and Billups were solid, steady presences at the 1, but neither could create for others like Lin can. And Lin’s only scoring as much as he is cuz his PF is Jared Fucking Jeffries and the 3 is Landry and Bully Walker. He’s got to score, and he is. But eventually he won’t have to.
I have an erection.

you think they will fit in because you're not bat shit crazy and ready to jump the gun
theses guys are pro’s. Not just that, they’ve up until now they’ve been very successful pro’s with several years of meaningful production. For anyone to insinuate that these guys can’t adjust is just stupid. Not to mention the fact that both Amare and Melo played with Lin in extended minutes during the Nets game and all looked well to me. The earth didn’t fall off it’s axis. The sea didn’t rise up and swallow civilization. We won and we looked good in a game that even against the Nets we probably would have lost during the early parts of this season. Aside from that Melo looked pleased as punch to win while only taking 15 shots and scoring 11. Really don’t know why this is that big of a deal other than the fact that a bunch of sites and papers want to sensationalize things to make dollars. If those outlets really paid attention to the knicks they would have noticed the team as a whole was working shit out even before Lins magical Nets game, going as far back as Detroit and a sad but well played loss to the bulls.
Lin’s emergence makes things easier for us no doubt but it won’t be a picnic but it also won’t be the end of the world if it takes Stat and Melo a game or two to get re acclimated. Nothing at all to do with their games or attitudes and probably more so to do with getting over injuries, personal problems and the fact that neither has played ball in a minute.
Everybody temper expectations and just lets not overreact whichever way the pendulum swings.

I think we should overreact and be proud of it
We are fans and Fan is short for fanatic. So I for one am all for overreacting. Hey this guy Lin has made me look like a stone cold idiot and I could not be happier in my life. Now I do not think Amare is a question at all, and really no one else does either. In Lin D’Antoni has finally found someone this season who can and will run his offense. The strength of this kid’s game has been he executes the point guard position the way you have to in this offense and he makes good decisions. He has been scoring because for the most part his shot attempts come off of his reads of the defense, Much like Nash’s when D’Antoni had him. This guy and Stat will get along well. Since when did Amare have a problem playing with a point guard who knows how to execute the pick and roll? As for Carmelo. first the guy wants to win and he has to see how much better his teammates play now that the offense is being run the way it was designed to. He will want them to keep their grooves going. Secondly, he is Carmelo Anthony folks, that means the ball is going to find him plenty in the offense. Only now he may not be facing as many double teams and set defenses geared to stop him. It will work because, it will.

I choose not to set myself up for disappointment, but have at it. I can see this offense working with all of our guys as well but I’m not one of those blind faith kind of guys. I’d be inhuman if I didn’t hope it would work, I even think it will work but I always gotta leave that room for doubt. Nothing is certain, but that cuts both ways. Its not certain that it will work but it damn sure is aint certain that it won’t.

Stat will be back for sure on Tuesday, and Melo is supposedly progressing well and probably will return this week as well. Knicks will benefit from the shitty teams they’re playing, and should be able to incorporate them into the offense and still win. I can’t see Stat having a problem because a good point guard is what he’s been lacking this year. As for Melo, I would be shocked if he’s a problem. The guy’s been doubled and beaten all year, and now he has a chance to shoot open jumpers and only have to deal with one man when he drives to the hoop. The game will be much more fun for him.
Proud owner of over 20,000 comments. (most of them in the wrong place) Oh yeah, and Buster Posey
I would say that, pretty much
It’s because a) we’ve been playing good defense, and b) we haven’t wasted possessions on offense because Lin has been decisive, creative and aggressive in initiating the offense, and he’s also been hitting shots.
I’ve kind of calmed down from the Lin euphoria and I’m just looking forward to following this team – I feel they will compete on both ends night in and night out, and they now have good players at pretty much every position on the floor.
Get The Frickin' Rebound
I agree...
… something has shifted with this team, and the momentum created by Lin’s emergence feels like it’s strong enough to move us through the adjustments of bringing Melo and Stat back.
and there’s a collective now that won’t back down… not to other teams, and not to the temptation of leaning to heavily on stars.

If Knicks don’t win with Melo and Amare back, you can take it to the bank that either or both Melo and Amare will be traded.
So much
Was labeled as certainty this season, that I’d have a hard time believing that. D’Antoni was on his way out for sure. We had no PG until Baron got back, for sure. We were definitely going to cut Lin last week. TD would at least be adequate, and, if not, Melo was a more than capable point-forward that would run the offense efficiently. Let’s see how shit plays out dude.

Melo is NOT Stephon Marbury
Anyone heard of Joe Johnson? Guess where he blew up. PHOENIX, WITH D’ANTONI, NEXT TO STEVE NASH.
Nowadays he’s an iso scorer, but he got his start as the prototypical D’Antoni 3. Who plays like Joe Johnson on this team hmmm…I wonder.
As for the intangibles, yes Lin has inspired this team in a way Melo was unable to, but that doesn’t mean he’s the anti-hustle guy or something.
How many times has Lin found Walker wide-open with the option to drive or hit a quick 3, and Walker somehow fudges it up? Melo would turn 70 to 80% of those opportunities into points. And Walker has no ability to pass off of that. Melo can do that better as well.

I don't know why only one thing has to be responsible for the recent success
Just like when we were losing due to a combo of reasons, I think the recent success is due to a combo of reasons as well, the largest being Lin. I think it’s both talent and intangibles though. I see no reason to pick between the two. They both play a part in our new found success.

They could makes some changes as to where Melo gets the ball.
I don’t think Lin will necessarily be passing the ball to him and he gets and assist out of it, but in the halfcourt they could do stuff like LA is doing with Kobe right now- get Melo the ball in the post or off screens at the free throw line elbow. I’d like to see him receive the ball less at the three point line. I think he could be more dangerous closer to the basket. Of course, Lin can also find him for open threes and on the break.
I read an article that said Carmelo pushed for Lin to play more when the coaches were thinking about it. I think it was a Screamin’ A. Smith article, so take it with a grain of salt.

blessed are we
to have Lin. he’s turned the team around. and just as importantly, gave baron the ability to rehab correctly..at a slower more productive pace.
we still only have 1pg y’all. (im not counting Bobby) and the offense w/o Lin in the court quickly reminds us how we were pre-lin
