My first post ever and regarding Jeremy Lin

I have been reading Pinstripe Alley, Big Blue View and Posting and Toasting for over two years. I have never commented once because I simply enjoy reading what you all have to say. Seth is by far the funniest person in relation to sports I have ever come across.

A little bit about me, I have a different background. My heritage is Chinese (my grandpa was Chinese), but my parents are Dominican-Americans. So, my parents are Dominicans but immigrated to New York in the 60's. Of course the Yankees are number one, but the Giants and Knicks aren't far behind. For the record, I don't identify as Spanish or Chinese or Mexican (sorry if that offends any Mexicans). I'm American. I was born in Queens, but grew up in South Florida. While I grew up with a little bit of Chinese, but mostly Dominican culture, I don't feel I'm hyphenated. I guess that's a lead in to what I think about Jeremy Lin.

I was a fan of Jeremy Lin after the Summer League game against John Wall. Part of it was because I'm not a fan of John Wall, but another was that because even though I'm not really Chinese, I gravitated to Lin. I was even watching highlights of his one good warrior game over and over because I was excited for him at the time. Then we got him and he preceded to fail at dribbling up the court and turning the ball over without anyone actually around him. I was discouraged, but still wanted him to play.

He finally got the chance last week and has gone on this ridiculous run. What I don't understand though is that no one thinks he can sustain it. I understand that some of the "He can't keep it up" stuff is because he was undrafted and from the end of the bench. Would being drafted 60th be less surprising though? (I think more because than we would have won the championship and we would actually have draft picks too) When I talked to my dad, I said people are so surprised and don't think he can do this is partly because he has Asian blood. If he was black, would it be as amazing of a story? I don't think so. I get that he hasn't faced the Bulls and Celtic's defense every game, but he is doing this against professional ball clubs. Maybe he can't sustain it once he has more scoring options, which is a reasonable argument. For whatever reason though, I believe he could sustain this kind of production if given the chance. I believe this because he can play ball and has the skills regardless of his race.

If you guys read this, thanks for indulging me. I just wanted to post this here since I think you guys might understand it more than all the casual fans and bandwagoners that I seem to know.

Congratulations on your first post...

And regarding your theory that his asian heritage might be influencing some peoples lack of “faith” in his ability to sustain it… I agree in part. I’m sure there’s some under-current of stereotype feeding peoples doubt of him. And this just makes his success that much more awesome.

Enjoy the ride jts025…

I disagree.

I think this would have been a big story no matter what race. The thing about Jeremy Lin is he already had a decent following. After that summer league he turned a lot of die hard basketball fans heads (the only ones that watch summer league). If all other variables were in place but with the only difference being race, then its still an underdog story and would receive the same amount of attention(in U.S.) Overseas is a different story though. Asia loves its basketball players.

The hype seems to be because of a "perfect storm" of reasons.

1.0 Underdog…….Americans love to cheer for the underdog who overcomes/suceeds over a history challeges…this kid has overcome all the classic NBA putdowns..no athletic scholarship, no play on a big time Div1 team, undrafted, dumped and cut from 2 NBA teams after rookie year garbage minutes, D League, asian basketball heratige even though he is red blooded suburban american,(suburban being an added black star on resume), no guanteed contract, living on a sofa in NY..etc etc

2.0 New York hype.

3.0 Kid makes good in the big apple….

4.0 The high esteemed Knicks recent history of low esteem even after grabbing 2 of the 3 desired stars causing increadible fan frustration.

5.0 Team desperate for a star point guard ….much talk about the upcoming demise of a Coach who cant win without Steve Nash.

6.0 New York negative hype. Not a a good place for loosers….

7.0 Lotta talk about the stars/no team chemistry.

8.0 Stars away from team….

9.0 Desperate coach roles the dice and gives" D-League bench warmer/about to be cut" kid a chance…..nothing to loose.

10.0 Said kid goes from nothing to Chris Paul/Steve Nash comparisons and wins 5 in row with bench players and becomes the Savior of the “esteemed” Knicks in a week. Makes the team better and the new center the star the FO thought they had paid for.

Conclusion: International media hype….great story line for all…

Next: International media tears the kid down for every mistake…. personal and on the court.

Some multi-sports commenters and columnists don't actually watch the games.

They watch highlights and see what others say and form their opinion from there. Most of those who watched the games and understand basketball, like Hubie Brown and Magic Johnson, know he has talent.

Sadly, I think race has at least a little to do with people thinking he can’t sustain it, even if they don’t directly say so. He didn’t get a lot of college scholarships or was drafted despite having good high school/college careers. I’ve actually read some columnists suggest he wouldn’t have been that big a story if he wasn’t Asian. He was Asian in his rookie year(I would assume), and didn’t get much attention then. Also, I’ve never seen any bubble NBA players, the lowest on the NBA totem pole, bust out like he did and get a team in playoff contention without 2 allstars.

True that

I had to cover rutgers basketball for a class and the guy next to me in the press seats was from news 12 nj. He was totally ignoring the game and working on another story about gymnastics.
