Would u sign JR Smith?? I would
JR Smith season in China is coming to an end. he will be back in the states on February 15th. As a Knick fan and watching this crazy up and down season, we saw many issues that needed to be addressed. First being the PG position which has almost pretty much been vastly improved as we have a potential star in the making with LIN... 2nd issue was depth from the bench... and a scoring. I believe JR Smith would be an excellent fit in NY... Many are scared of the chemistry issue, but with a PG that can command the offense, I don't see chemistry with JR as a problem. he can spot and shoot and he can shoot off the pass. He's is a PURE SG and much more of a threat then Landry Fields who in my opinion is more of a natural SF. More of the question would be who starts and who comes off the bench.... Well Fields doesn't play so well on the floor with Melo. having JR allows flexibility in the starting rotation at SG... It also allows us to spread the floor allowing Novak to spell Stat, JJ at the 5 for Ty, Fields at the SF, and JR at SG... Also relieves Lin of having to scoring so much... I also believe with JR, Lin's assist per game gets higher. If Melo gets in foul trouble I trust JR Smith 200% more to make the shot then Fields. No knock on fields at all, but the point being that bringing in JR is not as bad a problem then many are making it out to be... Just ask the Nuggets prior to the Melo trade... there was no chemistry issue... Competent & good PG's streamlines a lot of things. Whats your opinion

I'd say yes, especially because it'd mean the end of bibby' days...
but it would definitely challenge MDA in how he shared the minutes. A bench mob of baron, shump, JR, JJ, Jorts and now even Novak (sorry Bully, TD and Balk… ur out) has all the makings of a sick bench… a strange mix, but potentially really well balanced.
He'll probably sign with the Clips because he'll start. He averaged over 30 ppg in china, don't know how happy he'd be coming to NY to split minutes three ways with Shump and Fields.
And he’s another guy who really needs the ball to make an impact on the game. I’m not doubting his scoring ability, just dunno if it’s wise adding him.
Formerly known as "GangGrizzle".
JR
From what I have been reading, JR doesn’t actually need the ball… In China the team his been playing on plays the PnR offense, and he has been off screens spot up shooting and catch n shoot at a high %…. Could translate well. I rather he have the ball then Fields who does have the ball often at some points.

Fields seems better playing without the ball.
Letting Lin set him up has been great.

its the least Lin could do.... you know... it IS Landry's couch afterall, lol!

Id prefer the starting 5 remain.
and smith and BubbaShump come in as the 2nd line of guards.
it would be constant greatness in the back-court

What we need are backup point guards.
Baron Davis is so out of shape it isn’t funny. Look at Monday training. I had hoped BD would come back but that guy looks like he’s ready to ship out of New York. Bibby is looking at his last paycheck. Toney Douglas is AWOL.
we need someone to take 15 minutes of point guard time.
hmmm
Alan Hahn alanhahn
"ib84: @alanhahn How did BD look?" very lean. Moved well but at a controlled pace
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."
alan hahn is a company shill at this point
sad but true

What, would be your evidence to your assertion?
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."
he was too willing to make excuses, sell us on false hope during that losing streak . . .
he’s always been a homer, but now that he’s working for MSG, I really can’t trust him
plus in my opinion our front office deserved a lot of flack for putting us out there without a point guard for much of the season especially considering our coach, but alan’s not allowed to criticize the front office. . .

You couldn't be more wrong about Alan Hahn.
he was too willing to make excuses, sell us on false hope during that losing streak . . .
he’s always been a homer, but now that he’s working for MSG, I really can’t trust him
He has discussed on MSG and written on his MSG blog and tweeted on how prior to Linsanity all the Knicks need was a point guard during their losing streak(s). This is what you characterize as “false hopes?”
How about the fact that he was dead right?

i'm not talking about his articles
I’m talking about him and those other guys sitting in the studio trying to rationalize the crap product the knicks were putting on the floor
Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate
no, he wasn't right
this team needed a point guard. yes. we didn’t have a plan to get a point guard. if the miracle that is jeremy lin hadn’t happened we’d still be sitting here watching our 10th/11th seed team, praying that baron davis would come back or hoping we could trade for johnny flynn.

no, I'm not blaming alan hahn for anything the knicks do, obviously
I’m blaming him for feeding us excuses. i’m done with excuses. i’ve had 10 years of excuses with this team. they’re a bad franchise is what’s what. poison from the top down. they make poor decisions and put out poorly fitting teams, and i would rather hear that obvious truth than excuses. they’re paying three guys who have little to no chemistry major bucks, and they’ disrespected this coach by not giving him a point guard or any shooters to work with. a good team respects their coach and gives him his type of players.
Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate
?
don’t know what you mean.
i am happy this team is winning now, but this season almost became a joke. just like we were a joke in with marbury and curry and randolph and crawford and van horn and the list goes on. if you are the wealthiest team in the NBA but also the least successful over a 10 year period, then there is something wrong with the organization. this was about to be the same crap all over again. another year of mismatched talent with a mismatch coach. i’m sick of blaming the players and the coach. i want to blame the organization. they’ve been doing this crap for 10 years. just build a well fitting team. is that so hard.

there were rational reasons for poor play though
i guess Mike and the Mad Dog is what you would want to see?
They called the play bad when it was bad… but the team was beginning its turnaorund even before linsanity.

I don't want to hear excuses when the team is playing that badly. people need to be called out
mike should be called out for trying to force his system on a team with no point guard or even strong ball handlers
amar’e should be called out for his lack of a post game and nonexistent defense
carmelo should be called out for his ball hogging and selfish play
but the people who really should be called out are the front office for putting this hodge podge of talent out there. it’s working out now because we lucked into a point guard capable of running mike’s system, but if jeremy hadn’t come along, this season would have been an embarrassment.

There were so many guys
bagging on D’antoni, his system, Melo et cetera, that Hahn’s more reasoned tone has always been refreshing to me. I don’t always agree but I think he’s been intelligent and non-hysterical.
On the other hand, if I feel like getting hysterical, there are at least 10 other options to go that route. But I don’t usually feel like getting hysterical, so that’s why I like Hahn and it’s also why I like P&T.
Get The Frickin' Rebound
I don't really want to bag on mike, amar'e, or carmelo
they’ve all had success in this league. i think they needed to adjust better than they did, but they were all put in a difficult situation. again, i really blame the front office. they put out a poorly fitting roster with the wrong coach. they’ve been doing this crap for 10 years. i really don’t see the difference between this team pre-lin and the curry/randolph pairing or the marbury/francis pairing. talented players who should not be teammates.
james dolan has absolutely nothing to hang his hat on unless you count a couple of first round playoff sweeps as something which you really shouldn’t because every other team has accomplished something more than that since 2001 . i’m sick of the same garbage from him and the people he surrounds himself with. i really thought he deserved to be called out for this season. he’s lucky lin popped up. he’s also lucky he got forced to hire mike d’antoni who did a bad job at the beginning of the season but as we know is capable of catching fire.

you don't give up anything on defense because he and shumpert can both guard both guard positions
Anxiously awaiting the day my username will be appropriate
Yes
At first, I was hesitant for fear of stunting the growth of Shump or Fields. But you don’t have to use him that way. You can use him as a scorer of the bench. He can still get big minutes as Stat/Melo gets rest and he wouldn’t really take minutes away from Shump or Landry if he’s in that role.
Landry can still start and Shump can still have a major (utility) role as a backup 1/2/3. Then u can dump Bibby and/or Walker.
A second unit of Baron, JR, Shump, Jorts and Novak can probably run with most starting units. (Yes Jeffries is still sprinkled throughout.) Yeah, they would be a bit of a liability defensively, but they’d fíll it up at the other end and make near impossible for the opposing bench to make a run and either close deficit or extend lead. If anything, that crew would be a runnín añd gunnin instant offense crew.
by Crackback on Feb 14, 2012 12:41 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I'm not so sure
Yes it would mean the end of Bibby, but J R would command more minutes than Bike Mibby does.
Shump and Landry have really performed lately, and i’m not sure i’d want to take any away from them.
Smith is more of a scorer than the two knicks, but those two give their all every night, whereas JR is more likely to turn up not looking bothered if he’s not in the mood.
Like Wwert said i would rather find a backup point, I have doubts that Baron will ever be on court for us, and if we’re looking at the China returnees – then wouldnt Aaron Brooks be a better option?
Aaron Brooks
I think he’s a restricted free agent, not sure…
he is restricted
also his team looks like they might make a deep playoff run. so he could be unavialable for another month.
/// aighttho.com \/// twitter.com/aighttho \
shump can spell the point at times plus melo would handle at times
BIBBY IS A BUM! he deserves to be out of the rotation
actually, bibby is a well paid athlete
who prob has a very nice house and lives a nice, clean life and doesnt seem like he is a bad teammate.
but yes, he should be out of the rotation based on his poor play.
I think it was Bobby V who said: "You are never as good as you are when you are at your best, and you are not as bad as when you are at your worst."
im undecided to be honest
but if we got him, wouldn’t we want to use him as a starter anyway? surely that blows the clippers out of the water?
talent wise he’d be great. my issue isn’t so much the chemistry in terms of his personality as the fact he would presumably only be here a few months. i’d rather see landry further integrate into the team, given that all the main parts should be here next season. of course if there was a way to get jr to sign the 2 year room exception deal, then i’d do it in a shot, but i think he’d be looking for the rest of the season and then pay day right?
Pay day
Yea he would definitely be looking for more going into next season… Most NBA teams right now don’t have the money to offer as the Knicks do right now in regards to the roster spot and the exception… As far as Fields I just don’t think he blends well with Melo on the floor… We shall see tho. Hopefully this Lin era improves Landry and Melo on the floor together in some magical way.lol
i think fields and melo are great together
they started slow, but have recently figured it out. and now with lin at the helm… watch out.
but! if we get a true 2-guard, landry is probably better suited as a backup 3, and if possible a stretch 4. he played pf in college.

If the pats secure the ball, then the pats win, but if they fumble or let the ball get striped than the giants win. every game the giants play they always benefit from the other teams bonehead mistakes (fumbled or striped) not from thier skills. I think you do
cuz if there’s one thing we’ve seen, at least with the Knicks, its that you can’t have enough ballhandlers and scorers. JR Smith is much like Jamal Crawford, and I still say that if we had Mal here this whole time you don’t nearly see the cluster fuck of a team that we saw all this time until Linhotep showed up.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
If you have a chance to get a guy like this for the midlevel for a couple of years you do it
But since the Knicks mid-level is going to be swallowed up by Lin in all likelihood, Smith would be a rental, in the middle of a compressed season with very little practice time. Given the fact that we have two guys in Landry and Shump that are playing pretty well and are intelligent guys and good teammates, I think we’re better served by leaning on the guys we know we’re going to have beyond this year.
Since we have Landry’s early Bird rights, we are able to sign him for about 5 million without eating into our mid-level. Even if we wanted to drop Landry for Smith, we couldn’t do that.
If J.R. could back up the point, that makes a better case, but has he ever done that? And even if he could, next year you’re back to square one.
If we can get Landry and TD back to their 3pt percentages from last year, it’s not much of a dropoff from what Smith can bring. And the guys we have, we know they have defensive committment and a good team atititude.
Not belittling Smith’s skills at all, and giving him the benefit of the doubt as far as the ‘knucklehead’ thing, I still don’t make this move if I’m the GM.
Get The Frickin' Rebound
contractually...
i think we can sign a mid-level exception player independent of any money going to jeremy lin, IF he gets an offer from another team and we elect to match it. my understanding could very well be flawed, but i’m pretty sure thats the situation.
also, we cannot use our mid-level until the offseason. as it is unavailable for the time being. just saying, in case anyone wonders.
as per smith, and the knicks depth chart… i still think the team needs two players that can make an impact to truly be in contention. jr smith absolutely fills a need. and i always thought of him as a good pick and roll ballhandler, but i don’t have any stats to (dis)prove it.
pushing bill walker off the depth chart will be good. baron davis would push bibby off the depth chart if toney douglas could figure it out. and a big guy would be my final piece, someone who can play the 3 or 4, a la shawne williams.
and we may have those pieces. but i would not hesitate to add depth, and quality shooting to this team.
/// aighttho.com \\/// twitter.com/aighttho \\
Nah
We don’t have early bird rights on Lin because he was waived. But because he was picked up by us off waivers (rather than signing after having cleared waivers), we do have the Gilbert Arenas rule, which states that no team can sign him to a contract more than the mid-level, which means we can’t be outbid, but we have to use our midlevel to do it.
Landry has early bird rights, meaning we can sign him to a league average salary multiyear deal without using our midlevel (or sign him to a one year leage average salary and have full bird rights after that). But we don’t have that for Lin.
Which is my whole argument, really. No money to sign J.R. Smith next year, to me = no point in signing him now.
Get The Frickin' Rebound
This team needs outside shooters bad
I’m in favor. Dunno how many minutes he’ll want/take, but we could use the guard depth and 3 point scoring regardless and he’s such an upgrade over Mike Bibby it’s moderately ridiculous on the scale of ridiculosity.
by SweatbandProliferation on Feb 14, 2012 10:48 AM EST reply actions
its even ridiculous on the preposterous scale.
so that should say it all.
/// aighttho.com \\/// twitter.com/aighttho \\
By the way
I’m calling it right now – Bibby makes at least half of his threes tonight in his spot minutes backing up Lin. He’s been too good a three point shooter throughout his career to continue shooting 16 percent. I think he’s settling into his role as Lin’s backup and we’ll see some makes from him tonight.
Get The Frickin' Rebound
No
He’s basically Javale McGee at guard. Terrible bball IQ and empty stats.
We already have Novak, guys like Walker and TD should be better than they’ve shown this year, trust in the law of averages.
Consider also
He’s available now because his team didn’t make the playoffs in China.
Seriously? The guard play there is especially bad, and he couldn’t even carry his team to the playoffs….that kind of says it all.
in fairness
his team was wack, and then he helped bring them to the brink of the playoffs, and they didn’t make it.
just saying its not as cut and dry as you make it seem.

but if fields doesnt play well with melo are you meaning JR would get the start at the 2 instead , im confuzed. cuz later u have him coming off the bench and fields at the 3. are you saying shump starts? or fields at 2? . i would use shump as a sub for lin and at the 2 as well depending . then walker for a short breather for other spot , shump doesnt come in at. I would use fields as the 6th man to back up melo/smith and would start JR at the 2 since hes got experience with the Melo Man. Novak , Jorts, and JJ would fill the bench spots for the C/PF spots
i dont see why not

Though Fields, Shumpert, and Smith would share a rotation.
Maybe D’antoni runs a rotation with Shumpert as the PG when Lin needs some rest.
