Postgame Thread: Bulls 104, Knicks 102

The Knicks found something there in the second half. It was a gut-wrenching loss, and the lack of a point guard and any depth whatsoever still hurt them, but they made a legitimate game of it and looked waaaaay better than they have against good teams at any point this season. On to Boston.

Recap later.

In a long season there sure is

Maybe not in the playoffs, but if the Knicks take off from here you can point to tonight as the night the Knicks proved they could compete with the elite of the NBA.

Everybody bagging on Melo tonight needs to shut-up for a minute.

Yeah, he forced some shots down the stretch, but he’s a closer, what’d you expect. And a lot of times he makes those.

The point is: To blame this loss on Melo is to totally ignore the spectacular job he did facilitating the offense in the 1st quarter.
Dude was getting everybody involved. Without his playmaking at the beginning, maybe we get down big early and start chucking the rest of the night.

Why are mosquitoes hatching in our offense?

by StarksMiddleFinger on Feb 2, 2012 10:42 PM EST reply actions

exactly thats wat hes mostly here for to be our closer

kobe misses a ton of shots in the 4th qtr but the lakers will continue to go to him again and again

by abe88 on Feb 2, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Those are the best closers in the game...

But still I wish Melo had more step closer or had a 4pt play..
Hello I wish the refs actually gave them some calls.

by eomede07 on Feb 2, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

melo is known as one of the best closers in the league

and yea thats y i dont feel so bad we kinda built on the detroit game to be honest we get some calls and we wouldve won this

by abe88 on Feb 2, 2012 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

To be honest I didn't see anybody blaming Melo

I think he could have gotten a little closer on that final shot; there was still probably 1.5 left, but whatever. I still want him taking the last shot

But maybe it was just a few repetitive folks.

Honestly, I'd be the first person bitching after a 10-26 night from Melo

but he was pretty good this game. Kept the ball moving for the most part, got Amar’e involved in the offense, got fouled a ton and didn’t get calls.

by flossy on Feb 2, 2012 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

Really only a few bad shots too, as in his misses were on shots I’d want him to take.

I actually thought Melo passed the ball and trusted his teammates in critical moments

down the stretch and showed glimmers of “getting” his role in the team plan. couldn’t have said that b4 tonight’s game.

hey a glimmer is something at least.

by I know smart people on Feb 2, 2012 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

aaaannnddd this is why we need a point guard

Get Amar’e going – be competitive. Don’t get Amar’e going – suck. Iman played well – Amar’e got going – competitive game. Melo was a complimentary player in this game, the way how it should be.

He was defending Derrick Rose.

Did you expect him to hold Rose to below 20 points?

by 2xtheBully on Feb 2, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Well of course not (Wished for it)

But I expected him to make Rose sweat a little bit.

by eomede07 on Feb 2, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

he tried.

noone is going to stop rose..its crazy he hasnt even entered his prime yet…its just one of those players.

Shump played pretty well I thought

did a better job on Rose than anyone else we could’ve put on him. When Shump was guarding him he made the shots he should hav been forced to take and some incredible layups. I can’t be madat the rookie

by Kupe on Feb 3, 2012 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

Rose destroys everybody

I actually loved Shump’s aggression on offense. Went at Rose a few times and his J was falling too.

I would have loved to see more backcourt trapping on Rose, I thought that looked really good. But considering this is the first night in a b-t-b-t-b, you can’t just grind guys down like that

Yo but really

The refs were atrocious this game. Take away 2 of the fouls they called on the Knicks and give them to the Bulls, and this game might actually be a different outcome. And that’s being generous with the number of bad calls

How is it that Stat takes 27FGA's,

The majority of them going HARD to the basket, and gets 4 free throws for the game???

by jma67 on Feb 2, 2012 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

That foul on JJ and subsequent T on Chandler was an absolute joke. A rookie gets a call like that crashing into a player that everyone knows is one of the best in the business at drawing offensive fouls?

Proud owner of over 20,000 comments. (most of them in the wrong place) Oh yeah, and Buster Posey

by rxmeister on Feb 2, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Stat's been coming on last week or so...when he's involved in the offense!

I took A LOT of positives from this one (our PG play not being one of them), Stat & Fields were great, they seem to be getting more cohesive offensively, they lost not b/c of Melo-although he wasn’t good-they lost b/c of DRose being DRose…WOW, what a player! Gotta build on this effort the next couple nights tho!

by jma67 on Feb 2, 2012 10:53 PM EST reply actions

Bulls 23 free throw attempts

to Knicks 12.. when the discrepancy is this obvious its hard to believe that there isn’t motive behind it.

i like the fight, we really need a pg bad.

and i honestly have no problem with lin getting douglas’ minutes at this point..dantoni protects him too much

by Spike4Prez on Feb 2, 2012 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Honestly

I don’t know what happened to Douglas, but he can’t keep getting major minutes. He’s killing us with his poor shooting, ball control, and tunnel vision. Why D’Antoni is staying so loyal to him is a mystery.

by I know smart people on Feb 2, 2012 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

there are times where he just gives it to opposing teammates

and that thing where he things behind the basket is still in bounds and dribbles it out is really nnoying

by DonMoosavi on Feb 2, 2012 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

how about when he just fires a three with

23.9 still left on the shot clock. I get the feeling he is trying to be a fan favorite with those and not thinking about the game.

by I know smart people on Feb 2, 2012 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

I only get to watch the Knicks every other week

and I can see vast improvement in them. They’re still amazingly prone to having lucky bullshit happen against them, but the more they figure out that Carmelo doesn’t need to do his bullshit routine in order to score 26 points, the better.

The thing is, Baron davis doesn’t need to work wonders here. He just needs to be a veteran player.

by Rorschach44 on Feb 2, 2012 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

thats the thing

just by making passes without turning it over, just running the offense little bit, is all we need.

people are saying we’re turning to baron as savior, and to not be too hopeful- but even at my most pessimistic i know that walking, breathing Baron Davis will make us better

by DonMoosavi on Feb 2, 2012 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

Correct...

Our Big 3 can do what’s expected of them w/ a PG who knows when & where to get them the ball…I cannot count how many times we’ve seen Stat get the ball 22 feet away from the basket w/ the shot clock about to expire this season.

by jma67 on Feb 2, 2012 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

I actually was not a big believer that BD was the savior of this mess

but tonight it was clear the difference between a win and a “moral victory” was poise and ability to execute at the PG at critical moments. Shump did the best HE could….uh TD…well if you can’t say anything nice.

by I know smart people on Feb 2, 2012 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

Before you pat yourself on the back

Remember that they were out two starters and we never led by more than 2.

by east_harlem on Feb 2, 2012 11:14 PM EST reply actions

The point

is that we looked competitive for the first time in a few games. The bulls are good and rose is REALLY good. If we play competitively down the stretch, we should be able to win a good chunk of our games.

by Fabfreebird on Feb 2, 2012 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

come on. be nice. The Knicks played well.

Is Baron Davis really a starter if he's never even started for this team?

I think this game really exposed our lack of bench.

Whatever inkblot

There’s no asterisk on the Knicks side just because Baron Davis is in a grey suit on the bench, this is our starting lineup this season. Baron Davis is a total unknown for this team and that’s a fact. Meanwhile, we know that the Bulls would be better with Deng and Hamilton.

I will go to my grave believing that if the Knicks had picked up Earl Barron before the 2011 Playoffs, we would not have been swept by the Celtics.

Whatever man this is bad.

We needed this one. Boston comes in tomorrow over .500 and Paul Pierce ain’t watching from the bench this time. With the coach hot seat what it is this could go from bad to catastrophe really quickly.

toney douglas is taking awful one handed teardrop floaters. unacceptable. jared jefferies is playing decent minutes. unacceptable.

baron coming back should alleviate some spacing issues and hopefully cut down on turnovers. his explosiveness is gone but he still has a decent shot. toney douglas needs to be traded with balkman with a 2nd rd pick to get sessions.

then we need to get kenyon martin for the mini mid level or whatever we have left.

shumpert and fields play the starting 2. high impact and high energy. martin gives us toughness. this shit can be turned around. amare is def coming around. the season is short so hopefully we havent dug ourselves too deep of a hole.

WE GOT THIS.

Oh and guys... D'Antoni will not be fired, even if we go 0-3

Firing him would be a give up on the season. This will most likely be his last season unless something REALLY changes (BARON!?!?) but firing him now makes no sense. Everything would fall apart into a media circus and the entire team would collapse into uninspired failure

That Houston Rockets game? That would be every game.
