Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

A Thread For All-Star Friday Night

Evening, nuclei! It's All-Star Weekend, and all the nonsense in Orlando begins tonight. Here's the schedule for the evening's events:

7 pm: Celebrity All-Star Game

9 pm: Rising Stars Challenge

The former includes the following:

This year's players include celebrities from film, TV and music and will feature Grammy Award-winner Ne-Yo (R&B/pop); Common (Just Wright); JB Smoove ("Curb Your Enthusiasm"); Vinny Guadagnino ("Jersey Shore"); Kevin Hart (Laugh At My Pain); Javier Colon ("The Voice"); Drew and Jonathan Scott ("Property Brothers"); Jesse Williams ("Grey's Anatomy"); NBA Legends Mitch Richmond (six-time NBA All-Star), Penny Hardaway (four-time NBA All-Star), and Nick Anderson (NBA legend); 2011 WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings (WNBA, Indiana Fever); and Doug Gottlieb (ESPN, "The Doug Gottlieb Show").

The latter includes a bunch of bums alongside Landry Fields and NBA superstar Jeremy Lin.

If you're watching any of the night's events, feel free to comment along here. And, uh, I guess no .gifs, photos, or illegal streams, though if you're watching pirated feeds of the Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, you might need to reconsider some things.

Enjoy!

Hey, Seth

I have a question! Why is there a Steve Francis Hauntings Section? I wasn’t a part of the P&T community back in 2007 (not even as a lurker), and this sounds like a great story.

I just watched the Jeremy Lin interview. He was asked who has helped him with his transition. He said, Landry, Mello, and Tyson have been the most supportive. I’m am
soooooooooooooooo enjoying this story as much as I did Fernando Valenzuala’s

I also really enjoyed the piece that showed the other All Stars’ thoughts on him. Great to see that everyone is really pulling for him. Amazing story and I’m so happy it’s happening with us!

Did you hear what Bynum said about Cousins?

Said it’s a shame he plays in Sacto – that he could do damage on a good team. Isn’t the point of being a “star” making your own team a “good team”?

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

There is no point to being a "star"

That’s a media creation. The job of making a team a good team is the GM’s job.

__________________________________________________

by Russ on Feb 24, 2012 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Not really

The GM’s job is to collect excellent players that can mesh, who may be deemed “stars” because of that. My point was that Bynum giving Cousins a pass saying he should excel on a better team is a bailout. He should make his own team better. I really didn’t mean to start a debate on what a “star” is.

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

But it's not Cousins' job to make his team better

His job is to play basketball. No “star” makes his team a good team. The talent is either there or it is isn’t.

The GM puts the talent together. The coach coordinates the talent.

Ha I'll be honest

I didn’t expect to have a debate on Demarcus Cousins tonight in this thread. But, by your logic saying it isn’t the responsibility of a player to make his team better….so Deron Williams isn’t responsible for lifting the play of his teammates? Or CP3? Or even Kobe? Their job is to play basketball, but part of the game of basketball is working your talent into a team game. And saying “no star makes his team a good team” is pretty false. It’s an extreme example, but LeBron WAS the Cavs for a number of years there.

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

I think Russ’ point is that if your roster sucks your team isn’t gonna be good no matter what you do, though on the other hand Cousins doesn’t seem like he’ll ever take part in rising a team above its expectations

by paxon on Feb 24, 2012 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I get it, and I do enjoy everything Russ has to say

But I guess my point, going back to Cousins, is that true players that are great can find a way to carry the team and boost the play of their teammates. There’s some talent there in Sacto….but…it’s SACTO! And it seems like that point alone prevents Cousins from giving it his all.

And back to my original post – it REALLY bothers me seeing someone like Bynum defending him by saying it’s “a shame he is stuck there”. He’s not STUCK there. He was drafted by that team with the expectation of helping to turn the franchise around and be a cornerstone.

Totally get the “star” point that Russ made…but my point is more that I’m sick of talented players loafing through their rookie deal waiting for a better city.

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:46 PM EST up reply actions

Michael Jordan was never able to carry his team when the talent was not there

He was considered to be a selfish chucker who didn’t apply himself on defense. He didn’t change. His surrounding talent did. Then the Bulls started to win championships.

But what about LeBron?

He was surrounded by subpar players, yet they made some nice playoff runs. Without him, they were one of the worst teams in the league.

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

The Cavs played very good defense also.

Jordan’s early days, the surrounding talent wasn’t there and the Bulls weren’t known as an elite defensive team early in his career either.

by srsrs on Feb 24, 2012 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

That's it

No “star” will elevate the quality of talent with which he works. As far as working with your teammates to play as a better team, that’s an issue of coachibility. Are the players willing to alter how they play for the good of the team? If they’re not, a “star” won’t change that. That’s for the coaching staff to address.

See...I still disagree

I guess maybe it’s exclusive to the PG position, but an elite PG doesn’t elevate the play of those around him?

follow me @buffaloexplorer

by riverssyr on Feb 24, 2012 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

An elite PG does not elevate the play of his teammates

What an elite PG does is get his teammates higher percentage shot opportunities.

Okay

I guess the best I can do is say I agree to disagree, since I strongly disagree with that statement. If you’re saying it’s up to the coach to make the players work together, then an elite PG is often times the coach on the floor.

But I see where you’re coming from – with your logic a player is what he is, and an elite player simply can help him find his “spots”. I guess my argument is that by helping that player find his spots, he’s elevating his play.

Very deep convo for an All Star Friday thread, eh? Haha
