Report: Amar'e Stoudemire's Brother Killed in Car Accident

PrintSome terrible breaking news: Reports from Florida indicate that Hazell Stoudemire, the older brother of Amar'e Stoudemire, died this morning in a car accident. Here are the details available at the moment, as reported by TMZ:
The accident happened on Route 27 in Lake Wales. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Stoudemire was driving at a "high rate of speed" when he collided with the rear of a tractor trailer.
He died on the scene.
The Florida Highway Patrol says 35-year old Stoudemire was not wearing a seat belt when he smashed into the big rig ... and they are unsure if alcohol was a factor.
This has also been reported in the local paper and confirmed by the team. Amar'e is headed to Florida to join his family and will not play in tonight's game against the Jazz. That's the extent of the information available about the accident right now, but I'll update this post if I find anything more.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Amar'e and the whole Stoudemire family.

I feel terrible for Amare and his family. The sudden loss of a brother… I can’t even imagine it. He should take as much time as he and his family need.

I'm surprised at how hard this is hitting me
I’m such a fan of this team, through the ups and downs of the past year and a half… it kind of feels like Amar’e is a member of my family. And I think the reason for that is that he treats fans (and his teammates) with a lot of respect. I just really like the guy. I can’t even imagine what he must be feeling right now, but my heart goes out to him and I imagine the hearts of the entire team are heavy tonight.

Amar'e has been through a lot of turmoil with his family:
The loss of his father at childhood, the incarceration of both his brothers (his younger brother is doing 10 for attempted murder) and his mother (and her substance abuse problems). I’ve always been amazed at how he’s stayed on a clean path, and persevered through all the drama. He’s a strong dude.
