Re-signing Landry Fields in the off season

Landry will be a free agent this off season. The Knicks should use his Early-bird rights which can pay him up to the league's average salary at just over $5million a year; not to be confused with the MLE that they'll have available to use next year.

Question is, do you think he can get more than $5mill a year from other teams, & would he leave the big city for more dough?

I would seriously think about signing and trading Fields

I love Landry and what he brings here, but the truth is we need someone with better rock handling skills at the 2. Ideally he’s coming off the bench and I’m not sure given the rest of the roster and its lack of depth that I’d pay $5mill/year to a guy that does that. He’s been great and provided a lot in his 1 1/2 years here, but it is what it is.

I dunno if it could be for picks or a player (Evan Turner maybe…nah..), but I think he sort of creates a logjam at the 2 and really should be coming off the bench.

That aside I’d be all for signing him longterm, I just think its not just a done deal to keep him.

the way our cap is spread out

i’d sign him thru to like 14-15 or whatever the year stat/melo/chandler all come off the books… if not longer. its not gonna be easy for us to get any type of depth because we’re over the cap until those three leave. and we don’t have draft picks consecutively until… 2018??

but it will be easiest to keep what little depth we do have. sign and trade makes sense if you got a really talented player. but i don’t think he’s so good that you can leverage that kind of move. most teams will want to sign landry to a reasonable contract outright, or find the next best thing. otherwise we probably take back a nasty contract that we might be looking to trade almost instantly.

a team payed Wesley Matthews over $5million

Landry Fields is much more productive, so its actually quite realistic.

by Rorschach44 on Feb 6, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure what you consider much more productive, but Matthews had a similar first year

But he scored over 10 points a game in the playoffs as the starting SG, while Landry scored 1.8 and has not shown improvement in his second year. Portland overpaid but at least Matthews had a much more productive second season than Landry.

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

do you watch basketball?

numbers aside, landry looks waaaaaaay more competent than he did last year.

from the extra muscle, to the arc on the jumper. his handle is much improved. “handle” is basketball speak for ability to dribble. and just in general, a year older a year wiser. he played poorly in the very beginning of the season. and folks like you said he’s worthless. but he hasn’t had a bad game in the past few weeks, and a few of them have been terrific.

i know you never said this, but spurning fields for an even lacker lack of depth is a dumb dumb.

by stingy d on Feb 6, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

thanks for condescension since you're always right

He’s playing better than he did the beginning of the year, sure. But he’s mostly playing as a spot up shooter. He never gets to the line and his rebounding is abysmal. He’ll have to keep up his improved shooting along with reverting to his more aggressive self with the new Knicks PGs if he wants a big pay day.

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

you're quite welcome!

it was my pleasure really. since, as we all know, you are never wrong.

/// aighttho.com \/// twitter.com/aighttho \

by stingy d on Feb 6, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

not about this

Landry definitely does not look “waaaaaaay more competent.” He’s worked on his shot and it’s finally coming around, but his rebounding has gone from top at his position to subpar. He has been much less active in attacking the rim both with the ball and after the shot.

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

i'm sure tyson chandler doesn't effect fields' rebound numbers

i’m positive of that.

so while i’m not gonna try to stats your whole head up, i don’t see whats wrong with giving fields enough money to make sure he wants to stick around.

and as per the original post, the question is do you think he can’t get 5mil somewhere in the league? i think he could. very easily.

/// aighttho.com \/// twitter.com/aighttho \

by stingy d on Feb 6, 2012 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

tyson isn't getting 3 rebounds that would go to Landry

And he definitely is not preventing Landry from getting to the free throw line. The Knicks are not a good rebounding team and Landry has been much less active.

I’ve already said, I don’t think he can get 5 million anywhere unless he is more aggressive the rest of the year. This is a new CBA, and I can’t think of another team that might want him except the Nets, just for the fans he’d bring (although they have Brooks, who is already a better SG).

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

Landry hasn't rebounded that much

Since Melo got here. Melo’s also a good rebounder. From what I see, Landry’s job is to speed up the court.

i dont' know.

I like Landry because he friggin gave Lin a couch to sleep on.
Also Landry was really the one who got the ball rolling to get Lin on the team. And Landry has played with Lin in college.

I dont think we need Landry either, though. Sadly, I think we need his cap space for trying out more point guards. Even when point guards fail, they can become shooting guards. Lin needs 15 minutes of rest that bibby can’t offer him.

that was based on the playoffs tho

but yea, dolan throws money at money to get money out of money’s way, cus there’s money to be made.

by stingy d on Feb 6, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Like i have always said, you never know what a guy will get paid until he actually signs somewhere

We all agree, even you mindfeck, that there are players with contracts that have you shaking your heads. And as for Landry leaving, folks this is a business and their is no sentimentality in it. If he stays and gets off to a bad start you guys will want to come to his house and lynch him like some of you want to do Douglas. Landry will go where he can get the most money and if that is here then fine if not then he has to handle his business.

by Robert Curre on Feb 6, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Sure you could have imagined some stupid GM paying Landry $5 million

After the first half of last season, but with what we know now, that is nearly impossible. He’s probably at $2-3 million right now.

Then again, if the Nets want to try to steal some fans, maybe they’ll go for a Travis Outlaw 2.0 signing with Landry after they cut the other failed former Knicks Shawne and Sheldon.

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Again Mindfeck, you do not know nor can you predict what a GM is thinking

Remember signing free agents is a competition. So let’s take your 2-3 million number, really wouldn’t disagree with you, but consider this. If a GM from Team A wants Fields he is then competing with the Knicks for him. So if that GM thinks the Knicks will go as high as 3 mil, then he will go 4 or maybe even 5 because he is trying to figure out a figure high enough that the Knicks will not match. That is how your favorite scrub Jeffries got his payday from the Knicks. Washington wanted to keep him, so Isiah had to offer enough money to get Grundfeld to say “Are you crazy, screw it you can have him I am out.” So really what Fields will get next season will be driven by A. How much the Knicks do or do not want to keep him, and what any other Gm’s interested in him believe it will take to lure him from NY.

by Robert Curre on Feb 6, 2012 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Still, it's a new CBA

And Isiah is gone. What team would want a SG who scores under 10 points a game, and be willing to pay over $5 million?

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

Except JJ Barea who got his $5 or $6 million because of the NBA Finals

And obviously should be at $2 or $3 million but Kahn is an idiot. Still, it was clear someone would overpay him.

by mindfeck on Feb 6, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

Again Mindfeck get the point

You (Mindfeck) do not know what Landry Fields will sign for next season at all.

by Robert Curre on Feb 6, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

the spurs, the rockets, the mavs, possibly the lakers….. maybe even minnesota ftw(ildcard), i mean… teams will pay. and it only takes one.

Fields is not going anywhere; I hope we have learned our lesson with letting Lee,Chandler,
and Gallinari go. Fields stays, Douglas goes. Shumpert will spend less time on the floor
until he can prove he can shoot 40% FG from the floor. Fields worked all offseason on his
shot. While most of the NBA players’ shooting % are down this year- Fields is a respectable
47.6%.

By the way, Melo is shooting an unbelievable 39.8fg % AND MELO WILL BE NOT PLAYING
FOR THE KNICKS NEXT SEASON. Deron Williams could be a replacement.

Hard to be lieve MELO is shooting 3.8% from the field and has about as many turnovers as assists.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE that the Knbicks have a guy who passes the ball 1/2 the time to an
opposing player.

Nat\e Robinson has 3 X as many assists as turnovers, shooting 87% from the free thr line, and
41.2% fg %. Robinson beat out Lin for the backup point guard position @ Golden State.

I am so thankful

I don’t have to watch Nate Robinson try to play point guard for my team anymore.

Quote all the stats you want – what Jeremy Lin did the other night on the court reminded me of what Ray Felton used to do – and what Nate Robinson will never, ever be able to do.

Court vision. Floor leadership. Cool under pressure.

The Warriors tried to get Lin back, and when we got him instead, they signed Robinson.

i still like nate, because he just made me excited to see a game, and when its for all the marbles, i just feel like he’s the type of guy that goes to the next level. i like those kind of guys.

I mentioned this in the game thread, but (and I didn’t give it much thought at the time) he always seemed to play the 2 guard. He certainly always looked for his shot, and often took outside shots

I am atarting to wonder if you are really a Nets fan FrankieC

You seem to be obsessed with the Knicks keeping players from teams that failed to win 30 games. Look frankly if a team cannot win more than 40 games in the east, you probably should blow it up and start over.
