Carmelo Anthony's strained groin will sideline him for 1-2 weeks.

So, this is kind of a bummer. If you missed it, Carmelo Anthony strained his groin while running up the sideline last night (threw a ballin' alley-oop anyway), and Jonah Ballow just twat that the injury will keep him off the court for up to two weeks:

#Knicks SF @carmeloanthony out 1-2 weeks with a strained right groin. #NBA

(If you're not familiar with the parlance of the popular social networking site Twitter.com, that means Carmelo Anthony is out 1-2 weeks with a strained right groin.)

A few things...

Star-divide

- With Jeremy Lin stepping up, I feel a lot less horrified at the prospect of losing Melo for two weeks than I would have previously.

- That said, should Lin continue to excel, it'll be very interesting to see how Melo fits back into the offense (and super fun to hear people bloviate about how much better the Knicks are without him).

- Melo's ankle and wrist needed this rest anyway.

- The All-Star Game is in two and a half weeks. Not sure how this affects his availability for that event, but I kind of hope it does.

- Assuming Amar'e Stoudemire isn't back by tomorrow night (which is obviously completely understandable), Wednesday's game against the Wizards promises to be another wacky, Steve Novak-filled affair. I'm looking forward to it.

So, this is rough news for the team and will probably cost them some wins (which they tell me is a bad thing), not to mention more opportunities to build chemistry. That said, the timing of the injury could have been much worse, and Anthony already looked like he needed the rest anyway. Feel better, Melo, but take your time to heal (or at least do that until this magic runs out which is hopefully never because it's mAgiCaL!!!).

Not too bummed

Obviously it’s not a good thing, but he finally gets a chance to recover from the sprained wrist/ankle/everything and come back strong. If he comes back after the All-Star break, then that would mean he comes back at around the same time Baron Davis does (yeah, I know). Should be interesting.

And if Lin keeps doing his thing, once Amar’e comes back, we shouldn’t be much worse off than we were before. The idea of Lin feeding passes to Amar’e and Melo rather than Jeffries and Novak is very interesting.

This is his brother and they were close, but if i had to take a guess, and also being we lost Melo, maybe by friday for the Laker game. I would be very very truly gracious.

I kind of think he'll be back by the Lakers game

In no way am I saying he should be back or anything like that, just minus Melo, Stat will probably be eager to get back on the court, get his mind off things, and try and help the team he’s obviously super dedicated to

Post All Star Lineup

Baron, Fields, Melo, Amar’e, Chandler, backed up by Lin, Shump, JR Smith, JJ and Jorts. Novak and Douglas can spell moments here and there when one of the first 10 are struggling.

16-19 going into the break, come out of it with a win against Cleveland, then go after that brutal March schedule with the above team.

Not good news...

but like you say, Seth, Melo needs the rest anyway and should come back at full strength in a week or 2.

So I’m guessing we are looking at a Lin, Shumpert, Fields, Jefferies, Chandler starting 5 against the Wizards or possibly Billy at the 3 and Fields at the 2. Either way we’re going to have a hard working, fast moving team on the court so it should be fun. Had you told me a month ago that that was EVER going to be our starting lineup (even against the Wizards) I would have cringed but to be honest I’m feeling kind of strangely good about it…

i dont see why Fields cant play the 3

i mean he played the 4 in college and he came back looking like he tried to follow STAT around the weight room. let Bully be at the 2. we’ll need his shooting.

not because of some weird symbolicness but because, other than Phoenix, we have an amazing training staff (do NOT look at Baron Davis) who tends to work miracles (ok now look at Shump). Seth, you’re right in that he needs this rest. i think that time will do it, its 11 days counting today.

On the bright side, Melo and Amar'e both needed rest and are both getting some

And we can totally beat the wizards without those two, if the magic continues.

But I’m hoping Amar’e is back for the Lakers. If he’s not, that certainly more than understandable. I mean, this is the sort of tragic loss that is hard to comprehend it’s so deep, so as far as I’m concerned he has license to stay out as long as he wants. That said I’m still hoping he’s back for the Lakers because we’re not winning without him.

Dont show that around here...

people think because he had a good game against DWill that the TEAMS they were playing have no bearing on the results. Someone even said I dont like asian point guards yesterday. i want the kid to succeed as much as anyone else, and its evident the kid can ball. I just think people are unrealistic in their expectations and how they are gauging talent. Also Melo out for two weeks is really really bad, as someone else alluded to we might conceivably miss the playoffs, which would be disastrous for this franchise. Stat is 29, our window is not huge.

who pulls their groin jogging up the floor?

Somebody who doesn’t take care of their body. I seriously doubt that Carmelo Anthony puts even a quarter of the effort into his conditioning as Amare does. If your strength, conditioning, and flexibility are where they should be there is absolutely no way you pull a groin just by jogging up the floor. This is unacceptable.

by Knickerbockers on Feb 7, 2012 2:34 PM EST reply actions

hey, shit happens

it sucks yeah and im upset about it as well but to say hes barely putting in a quarter of effort? c’mon you cant even believe that. Melo worked out to get in better shape for this season and came in looking so. i mean Shumpert was getting cramps left and right and he’s in ridiculous shape. does that mean you’re angry and upset that he gets cramps? like i said im angry and upset hes hurt as well but im not angry with him or his conditioning. Injuries happen.

by blackhova on Feb 7, 2012 3:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

cramps are different, they’re caused by over-exertion and lactic acid build-up. Muscle pulls are primarily the result of either failing to stretch properly or the muscle not being strong enough to handle a certain movement. This is why most pulled muscles happen when an athlete makes some sort of explosive movement. The fact that he pulled it in such a benign manner means that his groin is not in good enough shape to handle even a small amount of stress. Somebody get this man to yoga class.

by Knickerbockers on Feb 7, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Just a reference put as Yankees fan

I remember Arod pulled his Groin while on the field. Arod that year was in no way out of shape, in fact he came into the year slimmer and more fit and quick. Yet he still pulled his groin. So shit happens to people, especially athletes who play a lot.

by lololol on Feb 7, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

don't know when he pulled it.

It is possible Melo pulled it several possessions before and tried to play through it, but the pain got unbearable. I never pulled a groin, but I did pull a hamstring once in college and I remember pulling it 3 or 4 trips up and back before coming out of the game. To my friends it looked like I pulled it trying to box out on a free throw cause that is when I went down, I actually pulled it 4 possessions before chasing a guy down and blocking his shot from behind. And I just couldn’t take it anymore when we got to the free throws.

Out of shape Melo can get all the rest he wants, he won’t be
back next year.

Neither will Baron Davis. On Dec 20, Davis said he would
CONSERVATIVELY back in 8-10 weeks, but could be back in
4-6 weeks, maybe sooner. It’s been 7 weeks now since Davis’s
comment. If he doesn’t come back in 3 weeks, he just might as
well NOT come back.

Melo won’t be back next year? I seriously doubt that. Baron Davis was a gamble, and if it doesn’t pan out so be it, he was the best option at the time. Amare hasn’t been productive this year, but that is more because of the lack of a point guard than his own fault. He was never a player that created his own shots, hopefully J Lin and him develop some good chemistry. And yes, Melo is fat lazy and out of shape

being a fan is all about expectations and this sucks for the fan.

under normal circumstances, without stat and melo and a pg, we would have simply written off the next few games and perhaps even this shortened season – and consoled ourselves that it was not meant to be.

But thanks to the heroics of guys like lin and JJ, we now have – EXPECTATIONS – the worst thing that can happen to a fan.

So, rather than simply forget about the season so I could have blissfully ignored all knick basketball – I am now forced to watch – and expect the knicks to win and thereby be broken hearted when they lose.
