Amar'e Stoudemire will miss the next three games.

Amar'e Stoudemire remains in Florida with his family, grieving the tragic death of his older brother, Hazell. It was uncertain initially how long he'd need, but the word now (first reported by TMZ) is that Amar'e will return to the team on Monday. In the meantime, one can only hope that the Stoudemires' grieving process is one of peace and healing. It breaks my heart to imagine Amar'e in that kind of pain.

For the Knicks, Amar'e's excused absence means three more games without their starting power forward. New York will face the Wizards, Lakers, and Timberwolves without Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony, which means...

...hey, Jeremy. Hey. How you doin', big guy? Kinda sleepy? That's understandable. Mmhmm. Hey, remember that time you played an absurd number of minutes and almost single-handedly ran the Knicks' offense to win them the game on Monday? Remember that? Remember how we all said it was an excellent performance but we'd be foolish to expect that kind of game from you every night? Well, see, here's the thing...

(Seriously, though, Lin is going to be THE target of opposing defenses for the next three games. I've been trying to curb my expectations of the kid, but if he continues to excel in his increasingly crucial role, I might lose it. Also, if he struggles, let us not neglect the circumstances, eh?)

so sorry this happened stat. Be well, and see you next week.

Be well stat

Much love from all your fans.

the lakers would be the only match-up i'd be worried about

if only because they have pau and bynum to clog the paint.

we’ll see after tonight if the scouting reports from other teams have come with a solution to defend against Lin.

by renovator on Feb 8, 2012 12:40 PM EST reply actions

It should be fairly obvious

Force him left and go under screens. His left isn’t terrible, but his right hand is clearly his strong hand.

It’ll be up to Lin to find a way to be creative and figure out how to be effective even when teams employ that strategy

Forcing left

Mitigate that with the pick n roll.

Going under the screens: it seems Jeremy has taken advantage of this by using the extra space to get under the free throw line, setting up a makeable jumper or easy penetration.

We’ll see if that continues. The most effective defense seemed to be double teaming and trapping him early. Without Melo and Amar’e there to punish this strategy, it could pay dividends, attacking Lin’s less-than-yoyo dribble. We’ll see. I’m kinda excited. This is a true baptism by fire

I wish for the best for Stat and his family

but these few games will really test the Knicks.
It’s these few games that will help build up the bench or the few games where they fall back into that slump.

Sorry to hear that about Stat

One again, condolences to he and his family.

In the meantime, I just accepted that the Knicks will probably get crushed against LA on Friday. And I also just got very excited to see Jared Jeffries defend Kevin Love. As far as the scoring load, we’ll need Jeremy to play very well, but guys like Shump, Landry, and Billy all gotta step up to the plate nad pick up the slack

first off gotta say again for Mare condolences. I wouldn’t blame him if he took the entire season off, stay up Mare.

As for the rest of the Knicks, kind of a win-win. They could go 0-3 easily and as long as they gave their best effort, tough to win in the NBA without your two best players. Even if its the Wizards and Wolves, they still have some decent players, especially the Wolves.

Tough to say Jeremy Lin still has to step up, he’s already done more for this team then anyone could’ve expected. But if he’s for real well…what better stretch then now?

I could see us going 2-1

Don’t like our chances against the Lakers, though our D could step up. Our D should be able to handle the Wiz and hopefully Rubio too

I wouldn't be surprised at 2-1

I think they win tonight, lose against the Lakers. And the Wolves game is exactly the type of scrappy team that beats the Knicks at ‘full strength’. But we’re the scrappy bunch now.

I really can't wait to see Lin-Rubio

Lin-Wall will be tight, but don’t know how much I will get to see.

I know we should expect to struggle against the Lakers, but I think that will be a lower scoring game and our D could give them lots of trouble – they use a lot of Kobe ISO and sometimes struggle to flow out there

2012 New York Mets, World Series Champions!

by astromets on Feb 8, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

i think rubio is the type of guy lin will struggle with

deron williams got herbed because he tried to be faster and more incredible than lin, and it didn’t work out. then there’s devin harris and earl watson (granted i missed the utah game)- harris can beat you with speed and speed alone. watson is heady but doesnt really have any physical gifts and can’t shoot to keep you honest, and he’s small.

john wall is gonna be faster than you or not as good as you or both.

rubio on the other hand, doesn’t beat you with speed or athleticism, he’s just slow and steady, understands how to get what he wants, and always takes what the defense gives him. so i think that could be the first real test for lin.

At Citicorp, you usually took a day or two off if you lost a close family member.

I don’t have a problem if Amare wants an UNPAID leave of absence to get his head straightened out.

I’m surprised, well, not really, that Melo hasn’t been benched for being out of shape. But this trade
was engineered by Dolan-so maybe Dantoni doesn’t want to rmbarass the Knick’s owner.

Why would you possibly care if he's paid or unpaid?

The only thing that effects the Knicks is that he’ll miss time, and considering the circumstances, he should take the time to be with his family. This is just a game. If you don’t get that, then you have some serious issues about which most of us here would rather not read.

Hey! Lay off Jeffries! He's cool!

40%-50% on those would be awesome — the team FG% is only 42%!
Jeffries used to be offensively inept. He’s worked hard to improve, though, and it really does show. It’s not fair to ask him to be a primary offensive weapon, but he’s gotten to the point where he can help run a play and, when set up properly, could even finish at a reliable frequency.
I used to hate on him too. Now I’m proud to have his back. Go Jeffries!

TIme to step up

That’s all it is. FIelds, Jeffries, Novak, Shumpert and Walker need to play as close to perfect as possible in order for the team to have a shot at going 3-0. Lin is going to be the focal point for the defensive strategy of all 3 of our upcoming opponents, so I won’t be surprised if his PPG drops a tad. As long as he keeps facilitating the offense in the same way he has against the Nets and Jazz, I’ll be happy. Defense has to be great as well. Hope Woodson’s up to the challenge.

And of course, condolences to the Stoudemire family. Must be terrible. Hope basketball let’s you focus on something else on Monday, Amar’e.

I said if they play as close to perfect as possible

With everything we’ve seen this season, especially from Shumpert, Lin and Fields, with Tyson Chandler manning a team that will stress defense during these 3 games, it’s not completely unreasonable.

And I also thought I had a better shot of hooking up with Minka Kelly than the Giants had of winning a Superbowl a few weeks back. Go figure.

If we're on a real upswing

It’s going to be a slow and steady climb back to .500. If we can go 2-1 that puts us at 12-16, which is sooooo much better than 8-15. But that means we’ve got to beat the bad teams. Come on knicks!

Minnesota is not bad this year. they are 13-12 and if not for a few bad breaks

could have been like 16-9. They appear legit for the moment. The Wizards are bad, very bad! and the LaKers have not been themselves but they are still formidable.

as i sit here and type this the knicks are currently tied for the 8th seed with the Bucks. If they win tonight, they will be alone in 8th place. do not worry we do not have to win half of our games unless the Bucks do. really all we have to do is win one more game than Milwaukee. by semsemma on Feb 8, 2012 3:06 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

Honestly

I could see the Bucks winning half their games going forward – you’re talking about a team that is 2-0 against the Heat, legit wins over LA and SAS, and Jennings is going ham with the assists. When the Nets get healthy I could see them getting hot, Toronto and Cleveland have been impressive. Before you write those teams off I would remind you that they are all within 2-3 games of us. We have a hungry pack behind us for that last spot in the standings, and our chances of jumping up past Boston aren’t looking good the way they’re playing. I don’t think you can assume we’ll squeeze in somehow.

I will go to my grave believing that if the Knicks had picked up Earl Barron before the 2011 Playoffs, we would not have been swept by the Celtics.

by east_harlem on Feb 8, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

not writing them off at all.

but if you ask me. Looking at our roster and the potential we have..and comparing it to those teams underneath us. We are the most underacheiving group of the bunch. And with a pg that fits this system to a T. ANd with Melo already buying into the system for the few games he was in before that Groin injury. We have a better chance at winning more games than the teams that are close to us in the standings. Yes Biased in a way..but its obvious that we have a more talented group than the Nets, Raps, Cavs etc..even the bucks sans Bogut

So not fair to Lin

He finally works his way up to getting playing time, and now he has to play 45 minutes/game!

He finally works his way into the starting lineup, and now everyone else is gone! His starting forwards are Walker and Jeffries!

He finally proves he’s the best assist-maker on the team, and now there’s only one guy available to play averaging more than 10ppg!

Lin’s getting lemons, but he’s making a killer lemonade. There’s so much to love about this guy, and we should all be cheering him on for any contribution he’s able to make over the next few games.

This is a tall order. Winning these games without Melo and Amar’e isn’t going to be easy.

Get The Frickin' Rebound

by fuhry on Feb 8, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

I know

I think it’s not fair to Lin to assess his performance over the next few games by whether he leads the Knicks to victory or not. It’s not really a true Knicks team that he’s playing with, and neither Melo nor Stoudemire nor the both of them together were producing many wins for us. So changing the rules and now judging Lin based on win-production would be a huge mistake.

He should get credit for whatever he’s able to wring out of himself and his teammates. And if he gets us some wins over the next week, we should all chip in and buy him flowers, or put down a deposit on an apartment for him, or maybe just gush about how awesome he is. But if I see a headline, “Lin Puts Up Stellar Numbers, But Not the Win” I’m going to be writing some strongly worded letters to the authorities.

Speaking of which: Why hasn’t Obama issued a statement about Jeremy Lin yet? Lin’s awesomeness is clearly a matter of national importance; he deserves some recognition from the people who run this place, no?
Could we start a petition or something?
