Miami came within a couple of games of winning a chip last year and is the odds on favorite to win it all this year. Rumors are swirling that Dwight Howard and Deron Williams might take their talents to Dallas this summer and join Dirk to form a winning troika. That got me thinking is there any way we have a shot at creating our own Big 3 and surrounding it with a supporting cast that would make us champions within the next 3 years. The answer is a resounding Marv Albertian YES!! and here's how it all goes down.
STEP 1: Knicks trade Amare for Garnett by March 15th. If Boston balks because Amare's contract is uninsured, Dolan guarantees all or part of the amount. If necessary, we throw in Landry to close the deal. Robert Currence mentioned to me that Boston would probably do this trade and a recent Bleacher report even had us getting some draft picks with Garnett. With Chandler and Garnett anchoring our defense, we have a decent chance of competing for a chip this season.
STEP 2: This summer we sign Dwight Howard using freed-up cap from Garnett's expiring contract.
STEP 3: This summer we get Dwill from Nets giving up Chandler/Lin/TD. If Nets balk, Dwill walks and signs with some other club (maybe Dallas which will have cap space) and we then send Chandler/Lin etc. to that club for Dwill. Note even if we don't need to include Lin in deal, it probably makes sense to free up MLE for someone else.
Voila! Our Big 3 is D12/Dwill/Melo. We've got Shump and Jorts locked up for the next 2 or 3 years at low cost so our starting 5 could be D12/Dwill/Melo/Jorts/Shump. That lineup's got a nice mix of offense and defense. Baron would smell a chip and probably sign on at vet's minimum since he will still be receiving large amt from Cleveland. We use MLE to try to re-sign Novak or other 3pt specialist whose shooting would be maximized as D12 and Melo draw double teams. We also have Jerome Jordan and fill out roster with minimum contracts. If numbers don't work, Dwill and D12 sign for slightly less than max to make them work.
We know Dwill and D12 would like to play together. This scenario gives them the opportunity for a championship on the biggest of stages. They watch ESPN and have recently heard the roar of the Garden crowd and who wouldn't want some of that. I know...I know...our Big 3 is not a likable bunch and surely there would be ego problems which might torpedo the ship. You know what's coming: paging Phil Jackson to keep everyone in line. What better way for him to close out his career than by winning his last chip as a Knick. Frazier and Jackson reunited in the locker room as Clyde interviews Phil with the champagne corks popping and the rhymes flowing!!! If not, we try to nab Rick Carlisle.
What do you think? Realistic or is my scenario too Wertsian making even Dizzy seem rational?
