There are so many great individuals currently playing/coaching in New York. If you were a GM in football, basketball, or baseball (sorry hockey, I'm just not that into you), and you could pick 1 coach and 1 player to start your team from only New York-area teams, who would you pick and why? Do you make your picks for the media attention / monetary potential, or do you take a more conservative approach?
For example, do you go with a proven winner at coach in Tom Coughlin, despite his reputation as "not player friendly?" And do you pick Jeremy Lin because of his global marketing appeal? Or do you go with the high-risk, high-reward approach and take Rex Ryan at coach?
To make this interesting, feel free to cross-pollenate your choices. If you want to pick a football coach and a basketball player, go right ahead! And if you think the best coach is a Defensive Coordinator or Pitching Coach, go ahead and make your case.
I will start this off by making my picks: Jeremy Lin and Rex Ryan. I still believe in Ryan's ability to connect with his players, and Lin has so much marketing AND actual potential that it seems like a no-brainer. Please post your choices and rationale in the comments section. Thanks!
