Hi Everybody,
So glad you could make it.
I like to warm up my crowd with a joke or two. The old ones always work:
How do you make a small fortune?
Inherit a big one.
Or
What’s the difference between a candy store and a packed house at the Garden?
About 19,000 suckers.
And my dad's classic line:
Who was it that said, "Winning isn’t the only thing-- there’s always cable rights."
Yeah, those jokes always kill.
I used to bring my guitar out, sing a funny song, but I’m so good, I find it hard to stop playing with myself.
But once you set the mood, you go to the board and sketch an outline. I like to draw a basketball court. And then I erase it--that always gets a laugh. Then I write the 10 Management Mantras. Sometimes I ask for suggestions, but really, I'm the guy in charge, so what's the point of asking? Here they are:
- Reward success
- Communicate clearly with your staff
- Be a meritocracy
- Build from within
- Always have a Rabbi
- Engage the media
- Respect your customers
- Trust you coach
- Treat everyone with the same respect you'd expect
- If mantras 1-9 aren’t working, ignore them, improvise and above all, over-pay (as long as they aren’t Asian. Those guys are gonna take over the world.)
Oh, jeez. I've got to take this call. It's Zeke. I'll be sharing more of my wisdom later on. Stay tuned.
