Time to say goodbye

I'm only one guy and I get that nobody cares if I come or go, but I care, so here's my story, short and bittersweet.

I'm not your typical fan who loves his city's team come hell or high water. I started out as a Celtics fan (still am) and I've never lived in Boston in my life. I just liked their team, their philosophy, and ubuntu. Heck, KG can do no wrong so far as I'm concerned, and that includes hitting some jerk in the nuts... accidentally (ahem).

Came a time right after NYK played Boston when I fell in love with the Knicks. Lin was part of it, for sure, but what I REALLY liked more than anything else were the fans. They're just funnier, wilder, more vocal and irreverent than any other sports fans, for whatever reason. I knew (or thought I did) about the front office's incompetence and plain weirdness from the whole Isiah debacle, but that didn't matter at all. There was, besides Lin, Tyson Chandler -- probably THE best center in the whole league (including Howard) and a joy to watch, and Jared Jeffries -- how can you not love a guy like that? -- and Landry Fields -- smart, funny, energetic, and occasionally quite a good basketball player. And of course, how can you not love Shump, right? So OK, I could put up with Melo and Amare -- two of the most overrated players in the NBA -- so long as the rest of the team remained so lovable, and so long as there was hope for the future.

But now... what's left? Jeffries is gone. Fields is gone. And now Lin is gone.... which hurts the most because it was Lin and only Lin who held the hope of somehow making this dysfunctional team's disparate parts work together. He could make this group sing. Even with Anthony and Stoudemire on board, it seemed he could get it done. Now that hope is gone.

But it's even more than that loss of hope. It's the front office. I thought they weren't really relevant... but they showed me, didn't they. They're VERY relevant. This was the same group that read somewhere that you need superstars to win a championship, so they decided "let's get us some superstars!" Who'd they settle on? The WORST pair of superstars imaginable. Two guys who will seemingly NEVER get their acts in sync.... Melo and Amare. One is an egotistical ball-hogging, defense-averse wannabe-star, the other is a near-idiot who argues with fire extinguishers. Neither plays defense. Neither is EVER going to win a championship (barring a miracle or two).

When our new coach Woody decided to beat the Clippers rather than let them win -- when a win meant ZERO to the Knicks and a loss would have made it possible to avoid the Heat in the first round -- that was pretty stupid, imo. But ok, I thought... there's always next year, still plenty of reason to hope.

But then, after the AMAZING, INCREDIBLE piece of luck that landed Linsanity right in their laps... what do the Knicks do? They let Lin walk away FOR NOTHING. They could have spread out that last poison-pill year using the new CBA's "stretch" provision, if things didn't work out. Didn't matter. It also didn't matter that the team has almost NO obligations on the books for 2014-15, the year after the poison pill year. They could have worked it out for Lin. But no. The only hope this team had of reaching adequacy... is gone, just like that, with nothing to compensate the team but a memory of what might have been.

Ok... so now this has reached a level of stupidity... and arrogance... that I just can't stand. The stupidity is obvious. The arrogance is that THEY JUST DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT US, THE FANS. They're SURE we'll always stick with this team, no matter WHAT they do.

And maybe that's the case for a lot of fans. Too bad. Because a team like this doesn't deserve the fans it has. It's not even close. If they got what they deserved, the Dolans would have no fans left. This part of their business empire would be forced into bankruptcy, and then maybe somebody with some intelligence and heart might take over.

Yeah... a pipe dream. Not gonna happen. I know. That's why I'm leaving now. My fanhood for the Knicks was short and sweet. I still think they have the best fans around -- and you all deserve A LOT better than you're getting. Put the other way around, the Knicks don't deserve your loyalty, but I doubt they realize that. And I'm pretty sure they never will.
