Hey hey, Posters and Toasters. I've been more or less MIA the last few months. I've kept an eye on things but i haven't chimed in much. But now that Free Agency is open for business, I'm back for the newer topics.
Let's talk about this though. I'm a huge Jeremy Lin fan (seriously, who isn't?), first off. It's no secret to anyone that the Knicks need a consistent and talented PG either. I'm pretty confident the Knicks end up signing Mr. Lin (as they should) and I do think he makes for a solid PG. But is it an automatic thing that Jeremy Lin is THE point guard for the Knicks?
Don't mistake this as anything negative other than the idea that Lin has surely been overrated by the general public. I don't mean that as a knock against him but more of how people love and underdog and they love a bandwagon. But as informed Knicks fans, where do WE believe his ceiling lies? Solid Minutes-Played Back-up PG? Simple Starter? Potential All-Star? Something more? Yeah, it's obvious that if the Knicks were to somehow sign a Steve Nash (not likely), Nash would start. That's easy. We aren't really considering Deron Williams, but he'd obviously start as well. What about after the stars are off the board? Where does Lin compare with an old Jason Kidd, or a Ray Felton (coming off a horrible season, one would think he is gonna be extra motivated to repair his reputation?)
I expect Lin to play at least 25 mins a game this season. I'm not quite sold that he is the automatic starter if we resign him though. I think a Ray Felton or Jason Kidd would bring a shared workload of sorts cus you don't want the heavy miles on Kidd's legs to tire before playoffs, and Felton has to earn his role. I WOULD expect both of those guys to start over Lin though. As much as I dig the guy, I don't see him as a future All-Star type player. Not that it couldn't happen, but I think dude will be either a starter on a decent team, or an very good backup/role player on a excellent team.
But what happens if the Knicks call an audible and go hunting for a guy like Goran Dragic? What if they pull a trade with Houston for Kyle Lowry? Ramon Sessions? Jason Terry (not really a PG, buuuttt)? Hell, if Toronto gets Nash, what about Jose Calderon or Jerryd Bayless? There are a number of PGs out there this summer. Which of these guys would you start over Lin? Where do you think Lin falls in this field (marketing potential aside)?
