The Knicks are obviously off to a horrid start, standing at 2-4 with wins over the lowly Bucks and Bobcats. Mike Woodson has built a flawed defensive system, combined with poor defenders. Woodson deserves some blame for his dumb schemes, but the roster he has to work with just isn't good enough.
Carmelo Anthony, the flawed super-scorer, is our best player. To me, Melo is more of a sidekick. He's a high volume shooter who only contributes to the team when he's scoring. He's a terrible defender, and can't keep composed when the missed shots start piling up. When he starts missing shots, he loses confidence, and his play declines in his already weak areas also. To me, a Carmelo-lead team doesn't have much of a high ceiling.
If you're going to build around Anthony (which isn't very smart to begin with), you better have strong role players and guys who perform on offense AND defense. Raymond Felton is one of the worst perimeter defenders in the NBA, and he's errattic on offense. Not a quality starting point guard. Iman Shumpert is a good defender (who has several lapses from time to time), but his offensive game is extremely limited to spot up jumpers and fast-break points (can't do anything off the dribble). J.R Smith is also a poor defender, and is very similar to Melo offensively. MWP plays on both ends, but he is up there in age and not a long-term option. Bargnani is the worst rebounding 7 footer of all time, and he is ALSO a poor defender with inefficient scoring. Amare's offense has diminished with his athleticisim, and he's always been a poor defender. Tyson Chandler, the anchor of this team, is a great defender and rim protecter, but he has no game offensively (besides put-backs, alley-oops). The Knicks are a team filled with glorified specialists, something winning organizations do not do.
As for Carmelo's future, I want him gone. I am praying that the Knicks come to their senses and NOT give him max money and years while we continue to get eliminated from the first/second round every year. The Knicks should even explore a trade before the deadline to get something in return.
Although I want this to happen, I don't think it will. James Dolan will throw money at his prized "superstar", and the Knicks will never learn. This team needs a rebuild, or a new-look. Mike Woodson is likely a goner, but that's not good enough.
The Knicks need to start over and rebuild. Sports franchises do this all of the time. I believe we've already seen the height of the Melo era in NY. It's time for a change. All I can do is hope that the Knicks realize this.
