The Knicks signed Kenyon Martin to a ten-day contract.

That was fast.

Well, that didn't take long. Mere hours after sending Ronnie Brewer to Oklahoma City to open a roster spot, the Knicks have done what most expected and filled that spot with free agent big/old person Kenyon Martin. It's a ten-day contract that Howard Beck suggests will become official this weekend. Martin has spent large parts of his career playing with Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith, Marcus Camby, and Jason Kidd, so the introduction shouldn't be awkward.

None of us have laid eyes on Martin since late last season, so we'll just have to assume he's in okay basketball shape and able to do basketball things. More basketball things than he did last year in LA, one would hope. I suppose the Knicks' logic is that with Rasheed Wallace and Camby still unavailable, some depth up front is needed. Perhaps once Marsheed Wamby (copyright CARMP, I believe) is fully recovered, the Knicks will let Martin walk. Even with those two out, I see far more need in the backcourt than the frontcourt, so this is weird to me. I also harbor a deep-seated disdain for Martin dating back to his fugazi Nets years (I STILL RIDE FOR YOU, TIM THOMAS), so there's that. Not pleased with the move, but we'll see how it goes.

The Knicks roster now stands at 15 men. It's also slightly older, on average, than it was this morning. Woo!
