The end of the Boston series was honestly frightening watching this team self-destruct. I'm referring specifically to the way Melo and JR have basically reverted back to all ISO games. I have no idea when they stopped trusting their teammates but this team will not go far in this postseason if they continue to play like this.
In game 6, with the Knicks in front by a healthy margin, it became a free-for-all. Melo and JR foolishly running the clock down and then jacking up hideously awful shots. And seriously, when the game is on the line, the ENTIRE game plan is everyone clear out for play after play of Melo just going ISO at the top of the key and nobody else even touching the ball?? I can understand if the game is on the line for a single possession but how is this expected to work for extended periods of time? Especially considering that the defender on Melo will get better as the Knicks progress (assuming they do). He will see looks from George and West, and ultimately Lebron (yikes).
The team has solid offensive weapons, all of which are probably more efficient than this hero ball. Felton breaks defenses down, the pick and roll works well, Melo drawing a double-team in the post and then moving the ball around the perimeter works! I don't get what's going on but Woodson needs to take control and put the ball in Felton's hands more frequently down the stretch of these close games. There is zero reason that Melo should be exerting extra energy bringing up the ball.
Woodson also needs to have a better hold on JR. When he starts jacking up awful shots, he needs to be either reeled in or put on the bench. JR is becoming more and more erratic since the playoffs began. And news about him hanging in the club last night...I know it's JR and this is kinda normal for him but what happened to the changed man? Does he really need to be partying until all hours of the night before a fairly large afternoon game the following day? When he's disengaged, like he appeared in game 5, it is very obvious and his play suffers dramatically.
