Game Thread: SummerKnicks vs. SummerSpurs: 7-16-08

Today's relevant news story is that the Clippers acquired Marcus Camby last night in exchange for a second round pick. These are the same Clippers who appeared ready to welcome Zach Randolph, cumbersome contract and all (and I don't mean "and all" as a throwaway phrase. I'm talking about this.). Given L.A.'s unique situation of having like 4 players financially committed to their team, along with the sparse package they offered in return for Z-Bo, you've gotta wonder if the Randolph sweepstakes might be closed. And we won. Hooray. I suppose it's possible that the Clips would still want Zach to fill out their roster and form a starting frontcourt with Camby. Here's an artist's visual estimation of said frontcourt:

Electrifying. Anyway, we'll see what happens on that front, but it seems that our crusade to rid ourselves of Randolph has struck a hitch.

Meanwhile, Game 2 of Knicks Summer League action is today at 4 p.m. EST on MSG. This will serve as your thread for discussion should you be watching the game. I will not be, so the lovely Barnesgasm will be taking over in my stead. Anticipate dick jokes and references to Mystikal. Get them SummerW's.

Friday Coypus

T047084a_medium

Happy Friday, everybody, and T.G.I.F., indeed. I'll be gone down the shore to swim with the litter this weekend, so I've got a few links and a couple matters of housekeeping to leave you with into Saturday and Sunday.

- First piece of news is this rumor. The Knicks are reported to have rejected an offer from the Clippers that would send Zach Randolph to L.A. for some expiring contracts. Very, very interesting. It would seem that Walsh feels he can get more value in return for a player who, let's not forget, was exchanged for Channing Frye and that other guy just last summer. I suppose I'll give Walsh the benefit of the doubt. Randolph did have a solid season, numbers-wise, and he's still a star-caliber player with a unique skill set (an "unusual package", if you will). That said, I think other GM's won't be willing to part with much more than the equivalent of Channing Frye and cap relief. The Clips also have an assload of free agents, thereby standing as one of the few teams with fiscal room for Randolph's contract, let alone physical room for his globular head. ClipperSteve, meanwhile, isn't too hot on the prospect of Randolph, but has some interest in David Lee. We'll see what happens with this one. It is just a rumor, after all.

- To file away: Henry Abbott: "When the Knicks drafted Danilo Gallinari, I sent out a dozen or so text messages to my friends who are Knicks fans. It read, 'Hahahaha.'" Add that name to the list of people to troll if Gallinari makes it big. (I know. I should be on that list, too, since I panned the pick at the outset. Shut up.) By the way, Danilo Gallinari has officially been added to the SBNation database of taggable NBA players, meaning he's a legitimate big boy now. Don't be ashamed if you get a little choked up. I did too.

- If there's one thing that makes me want to keep Stephon Marbury around, it's my firm desire not to align myself with this guy.

- If you've been saving up for a pair of $9 Starburys, but haven't soldquite enough balloon animals to finance the purchase, fear not. It appears they aren't going anywhere. (Tip of the hat to Will Brinson.)

- A bit dated (my fault), but Barnesgasm has the details and pictures we wanted from that big soccer Shootout in Chinatown.

- Finally, a piece of business. Summer League play started today, and the Knicks' first game is on Monday. After that, games are on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All of the games are at 4 p.m. EST, and all will be on MSG. I work weekdays and don't get home until around 5, so I'll be missing a large portion of the first three Vegas games, which sucks. Anyway, it'd be great for P&T to have some insight on the youngsters for those that don't get to watch, so I'm asking for volunteers to recap the first three summer league games. You can sign up in the comments. Refer to my past summer league recaps if you're unfamiliar with the haphazard, rambling format preferred at Posting and Toasting. Thanks in advance.

That's it for the time being. Have a great weekend and remember: lefty loosey, righty tighty.

Wednesday Japanese Serows

P5_2_medium

Good afternoon, brethren. My internet's back, it's lovely outside, and the NBA Draft is but a week away. Things are peachy. In the meantime, let's touch on some things I've missed over the last few days.

- The workouts continued, as Love, Augustin, and Randolph, among others, rolled in for one massive workout, while Danilo Gallinari got to spin solo.

- Knickerblogger is doing some mock mongering of his own, including a chart marking the average projected draft spot of each potential Knick.

- As SML points out, Danilo Gallinari's NBA hopes may or may not be limited to the Tri-State area.

- The SB Nation Mock Draft rolls on at Ridiculous Upside. I got excited and picked Russell Westbrook 6th, passing on Bayless, Randolph, and Alexander in the process. Sorry.

- - Many are wondering if the Knicks' point guard hole might be more readily filled by trade, or by a lower draft pick. One interesting name mentioned in that article is Jarrett Jack. The Blazers also have the 13th pick to offer, although I can't imagine who we could offer to even out a draft day trade. They certainly don't want Z-Bo. You know what? It's time for a poll. If you choose to trade for a point or trade down in the draft order, let us know exactly what you're thinking of in the comments.

Poll
How should the Knicks solve their problems at point guard?
  • We're fine as is. I am either delusional or Mardy Collins.
  • Pray for Mayo or Bayless to fall.
  • Reach a little for Westbrook or Augustin.
  • Trade down for Westbrook or Augustin (specific ideas in the comments)
  • Trade for a point guard- Jack, Ford, Tinsley, etc.
  • Test tube.

Knicks Considering Ewing?

Patrick Ewing's currently an assistant in Orlando, working on sharpening Dwight Howard's game. Rumor has it we might want him back to coach our own big men. Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel (who subscribes to the D'Antoni school of grooming) reports:

If Magic Assistant Coach Patrick Ewing wants to return to his old team, the New York Knicks, in a similar role, the Magic would have to excuse him from the one year he has left on his contract.

Ewing has long talked about returning to New York, but mostly as a head coach of the Knicks.

New Knicks Coach Mike D'Antoni said that Ewing was on his list of potential assistant coaching candidates.

"I know what he did in New York and I know that he's done a good job since he left," D'Antoni told reporters. "He will definitely be considered."

I'd love the move. Ewing would give us some nice PR, a proven tutor for Curry, Randolph, and Morris, and, looking way ahead, a potential heir to D'Antoni's head coaching spot. I hope this rumor is for real.

I'll be out of town this weekend so computer access will be limited. I'll still try to get on and post, but I might not be all that on top of things. Have a good one.
