Open Thread: Mike D'Antoni Press Conference

Today at 1 p.m. the whole gang will be on MSG to introduce our new head coach, Mike D'Antoni. Here's your spot to discuss during the press conference. I don't know how many non-college students are going to be home for this, but we'll see what happens. Either way, I'll keep track of the highlights and report back. Get them coaches.

UPDATE: The Daily News is reporting that D'Antoni has already expressed a desire to ship out Stephon Marbury and add two of his former players: Boris Diaw and Leandro Barbosa. This would not be a money-saving move. Wonder if that'll be addressed in the presser today.

UPDATE AGAIN: If you can't find it on MSG (which was the case with the Walsh press conference), hit up MSG.com and you can watch it live online.

Playoff Open Thread/Knicks News: 4/20/08

Happy Sunday, children. This joyous day brings with it four must-see (three can-see) NBA playoff games. Here's your schedule:

12:30- Toronto/Orlando- TNT

3:00- Denver/Los Angeles- ABC

6:00- Philadelphia/Detroit- TNT

8:30- Atlanta/Boston- TNT

The bad news? Rumor has it that the Nugs/Lakes tilt on ABC won't be viewable in the New York area because the Pope's visit to Yankee Stadium is gonna be televised on ABC. I don't know about you, but until Benedict improves his assist/turnover ratio, I'd rather see Kobe. Oh well.

Meanwhile, if you were watching yesterday, you probably heard Mike Breen formally ask Mark Jackson if he had interest in the Knicks' now-vacant coaching job. Here's his reply:

"Well, I'll tell you what, Donnie Walsh is a guy I have a great relationship with, I have a lot of history with," Jackson said. "You talk about the Knicks, it's one of the greatest franchises in all of sports. It is a job that is very intriguing."

That's genuine interest, folks. I also love that he managed to incorporate some Hubie Brown "you talk about..." styling into his response. When Jeff Van Gundy was asked the same thing, he instead gave a vote of confidence for Jackson:

"This is a one-horse race right now; it's Mark Jackson," Van Gundy said. "It's his time and he would do a tremendous job if given the opportunity anywhere, but particularly a New York guy in New York. Great idea on basketball philosophy, great communication skills."

This certainly does seem to be the case. While we haven't heard anything yet from Walsh, Jackson does appear to be the front-runner. It's hard to take a stance when the guy has never coached before and we have no idea what his style is like. I can say that I'd be relieved to longer have to hear his announcing anymore...

More on this as it develops. Enjoy this glorious day and leave your comments here.

Playoff Open Thread: 4-19-08

It's 8 a.m. on a Saturday and I'm already up. That's how excited I am for the first day of this year's playoffs. Today's slate is fantastic, as things kick off with Wiz/Cavs at 12:30 and finish with Jazz/Rocks at 9:30. Here's the full schedule:

12:30- Washington/Cleveland- ESPN

3:00- Phoenix/San Antonio- ABC

7:00- Dallas/New Orleans- ESPN

9:30- Utah/Houston- ESPN

That's a tasty buffet of basketball for the very first day. I couldn't be more excited. This is your thread to comment on all the day's games, and I'll be checking in intermittently all afternoon and evening.

(...meanwhile, in New York...)

Donnie Walsh formally announced Isiah Thomas' firing from the Knicks, but kept with the early reports by retaining Isiah in some ambiguous role. Walsh's comments reflect a lot of the sentiments often expressed here at P&T:

"I just believe a new voice, a new coach, is necessary to change the direction of the team," Walsh said. "This is a coveted job. People want to coach here."

"Obviously, when you're losing, there has to be a culture change," he said. "There's no easy answer. ... We've got to work 24-7 to become competitive.

A culture change, indeed. Maybe with a new coach and a new culture in the locker room, we might still be in contention on April 19th. For now, enjoy the Knicks-free playoffs. Have a great day.

Game Thread: Knicks at Pacers- 4-16-08

The Knicks tip off tonight against the Pacers at 7 p.m., and this one is bound to be the finale of quite a few things. It's the last game of the humiliating '07-'08 campaign. Many expect it to be Isiah Thomas' last game with the Knicks. It could very well be the last time we see Curry, Randolph, Marbury, etc. with the organization. Even in these parts, tonight will be the last night the site looks as it currently does. Tomorrow we start fresh with a new look.

So take in this last game and make sure to take note. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of our lives. I hope.

UPDATE: I totally lied. Tomorrow (Friday) is the day of the switch, and was all along. My bad.

Game Thread: Knicks vs. Celtics- 4-14-08

I'm getting this thread up early because this penultimate game of the season brings with it quite a bit of significance. Those of us who want and expect Isiah Thomas to be fired as head coach might be seeing him for the last time in Madison Square Garden. In tonight's "Last Supper" if you will, Knick fans in attendance will likely celebrate Isiah's forthcoming departure with a grand loss to the Boston Celtics and all the free MSG food you can eat. Gonna be sweet.

On another note, our friend JoshL has a fantastic diary up breaking down the field of candidates for Isiah's job if and when he is fired. Thorough and worth your time.

Anyway, Knicks and C's tip off at 7:30. Get them snacks.

Game Thread: Knicks vs. Bobcats- 4-9-08

Welcome back, countrymen. The Knicks are at home tonight looking for their-(deep breath)- third straight win against the Charlotte Bobcats. Will they continue the trend of pissing on their lottery odds? Will they revert to the careless, downtrodden Knicks of old? The answers, tonight at 7:30.

I won't be around for this one, so if somebody wants to recap, that'd be cool. If Barnesgasm proved one thing last night, it's that recaps can still be entertaining at this juncture of the season. Get them ?'s.

Game Thread: Knicks at Pistons- 4-8-08

Hey everyone. Hope you had a joyous day. Tonight, the Knicks are in the fair city of Detroit to do battle with the Pistons. Though they've already locked up the second seed, I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit gets up for this one, considering that the Knicks lost to them by only four in their last game, and flat-out rocked them in the game before that. As will probably be the case for most of these last few games, I don't expect to be recapping tonight. The semester is winding down and finals are on the horizon. If anyone would like to do the recap, you have my blessing. If not, I'd be just as happy to let this season end unsung. Get them whatevers.
