Exit interviews were today, and they were kinda underwhelming. Only Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler, and Amar'e Stoudemire spoke.
Obviously, reporters only wanted to know what Melo was thinking about his choice to stay or leave this summer. Here's what he said:
Carmelo: Phil Jackson's "knowledge and wisdom is something I could sit down and listen to all day long."
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Melo on his future: "I want to come back. I want to come back. But I also want to win."
— Al Iannazzone (@Al_Iannazzone) April 17, 2014
Carmelo: "I don't know if I can afford another season of losing."
— Frank Isola (@FisolaNYDN) April 17, 2014
Carmelo: "I'm not at the point in my career where I want to rebuild." #Knicks
— Ian Begley (@IanBegley) April 17, 2014
Carmelo suggests that he's considered waiting until next year to opt out. But thinks its better to be a free agent now instead of waiting
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Still sounds like he'll opt out, but I think that's the first time I'd heard him even acknowledge the possibility of opting in.
Here's Melo on money:
Melo: "Let's be quite frank, we play this game to win. I like to consider myself financially stable at this point."
— charlie widdoes (@charliewiddoes) April 17, 2014
Carmelo: "At this point in my career I'm not concerned about the money." Knicks can offer more than any other team: five years, $129 million
— Frank Isola (@FisolaNYDN) April 17, 2014
On Mike Woodson:
Carmelo says if it came down to the Knicks asking him whether they should keep Woodson, he'd back Woodson as a coach.
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Carmelo called Woodson "almost a father figure." Said he's had some of his best playing yrs under him.
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Carmelo was getting choked up as he talked about not making the playoffs and about what Mike Woodson means to him. Very emotional.
— Frank Isola (@FisolaNYDN) April 17, 2014
On his shoulder injury:
.@carmeloanthony said he started the rehab process on his shoulder (torn labrum) yesterday. #Knicks
— Jonah Ballow (@jonahballow) April 17, 2014
Being emo:
Goth Melo: The messed up thing is we dug ourselves a huge grave coming into the season, losing games that come back to haunt us right now.
— Steve Popper (@StevePopper) April 17, 2014
Carmelo Anthony sounded absolutely tormented about not being in the playoffs. Said he's been losing sleep.
— Al Iannazzone (@Al_Iannazzone) April 17, 2014
And here's stuff from Amar'e and Chandler:
.@Amareisreal: With Coach Woodson, I've learned the most defensively of any coach."
— NBA New York Knicks (@nyknicks) April 17, 2014
.@Amareisreal: "I'm feeling stronger now than I did the entire year. I wanted 16 more games."
— NBA New York Knicks (@nyknicks) April 17, 2014
Wow, the Knicks would have swept every opponent if they'd made the playoffs!
Chandler says he wont talk with Carmelo this summer abt his FA decision. Says that's for Carmelo and his family to do.
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Chandler says he'd be in favor of a lot of things changing schematically, on offense and especially on defense.
— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 17, 2014
Note that Woodson didn't speak and wasn't actually involved in exit interviews at all. Just Phil Jackson and Steve Mills.
That's it.
