Look, I don’t necessarily believe that players (or ex-players) make the best general managers, especially players with no executive experience. That is how the Knicks ended up in their current predicament. But this kid Willy Hernangomez, he just might have a future in the front office.
No sooner did the large Spanish Knick return to his home country then he reacquainted himself with former Real Madrid teammate (and future 2018 lottery pick) Luka Doncic.
A good GM has two main responsibilities: identify talented players, and make sure that those talented players do not grow to despise you and your organization. Current GM has been decent at the former, unacceptably terrible at the latter. Willy, on the other hand, he understands how to schmooze with players without insulting him or comparing him to some dude who got kicked out of Georgetown in the ‘80s for smoking crack. Does that make Willy a superior GM candidate? It just might.
Here are some of Doncic’s highlights. I hesitate to say that any player could be worth a repeat performance of the Knicks’ 2016-17 season, but...shit, since they’re probably gonna screw up next season anyway...
